I was one of those people who watched it expecting it to be really great. But i was kinda disappointed seeing how boring it felt through out the movie. Definetly didn't feel like masterpiece anime movie.

The animation , voice acting and world building was good but didn't feel much interested in the plot and the charecters.

If it was aired in this generation, then it would've definitely gone overlooked. Other than the Animation, I don;t get the hype.

Yeah just because it's a Ghibli movie doesn't make it a masterpiece.

Yeah, I definitely think it is highly praised only because it's Ghibli. Wish someone would inform me on what they like about the show other than the Animation or Ost.

Yup Princess mononoke felt better than spirited away but both of them aren't really what I'd call a masterpiece.

Well I absolutely adore this movie. Ost is incredible and the animation is amazing. I understand where your coming from with the characters but I don't think it was about characters. It was more about the tone and vibe, kinda like mushishi. But hey if you didn't enjoy it you didn't enjoy it and that's fine!

People who are new to anime undervalue nostalgia. Is it top tier? No. Is it a classic? Yes. Classics don't have to be the best thing ever. Why do people still recognize things like Shrek or Lion King to this day? It's a classic, it doesn't need to be perfect to be a masterpiece.

On top of this, there's a generation coming where movies like Frozen will be considered Disney masterpieces, even though it's not their best work. Doesn't matter. Classics are simply just classics.

First of all, even if one does not acknowledge spirited away as a masterpiece, there’s still a lot of room between that and being ‘mid’, so this thread is already a bit frustrating with its title.

And secondly, if it wasn’t for you that’s perfectly fine, but it sounds like you have very clear standards for your anime, or overall fiction, but even if something doesn’t qualify for those and aims for something different than than an intricate plot, or characters with incredibly detailed and defined arcs, that doesn’t mean it can’t be as great as people say it is, for other reasons, that might not be what you’re looking for in a piece.

Ghibli movies are always so refreshing to me. They have a really slow real life pace to them with a super welcoming style of magical realism that brims with nostalgia for most people.

Ghibli movies are so different, such a relaxed and confident style of storytelling that flows effortlessly. They really taught me the value of the journey aswell as the destination. I imagine most people who dont like this film also see quite a few of Ghibli movies as quite empty.

That being said, Ghibli movies are all undeniably brilliant, even the worst ones. Maybe give it another try when your in a dofferent mood.

Aside from the phenomal directing and fascinating world with all sort of bizarre supernatural beings. Chihiro was a compelling character. Although a bit scared at first, she nonetheless kept doing her best in an unknown environment and showed many other positive qualities like kindness. She's simply endearing which made her gain the affection of the other characters and audience alike.

What's considered boring by some is an emotional tale about humanity with attention to detail that can be enjoyed by the young and the old. May not be one of my absolute favorite movies, but it's beauty almost moved me to tears.

It is a perfect and dense coming of age story, a contrast of a child going into a journey in the adult world where the peope is not concerned with you. It is a lesson about justice, love, reality, and how it impacts you when there is no real preparation to do so, a burst to the frustration of being an adult and a child at the same time. It also plays with the concept with identity, who we are and what we are, why are we here and what is our purpose. It is just not in your face like most anime, there is no character shouting what they accomplished during their journey, it isn't really that deep either, but it is elegant. The real deal here is that Miyazaki and anime are loosely correlated, there is not the otaku flavour of most anime here, but it is an important expression of japanese culture anyways

"Still"? Are you under the impression this thread undoes any of the multiple critical accolades this movie has garnered and how beloved it is also among anime fans? You have your reasons for not liking it, but your phrasing is a bit strange.
Some people in this thread have implied that nostalgia played a part at all, and to them I say "ok, zoomer".

The animation is what makes it unique. Japanese animation has been an inspiration for many foriegn studios. Especially, the movie Akira. That was a game changer for animation industry as a whole.

The animation is top notch, but you know, you can't just rate a movie/show based on how good the animation is. And yeah, the plot was pretty boring of Spirited Away. I only watched it to appreciate the hardworking that went into making that film and how good it looks. The plot wasn't interesting tbh.

Ghibli movies as a whole transcend the "anime" moniker. Just about all of them deliver a compelling story aided by engaging characters, beautiful animation, and an outstanding orchestral soundtrack. And Spirited Away is no different. It's not my absolute favorite Ghibli film, but it's definitely up there as one of Miyasaki's greatest works.

Here's a brief review I wrote some time ago on Letterboxd: "There's a reason this movie is so well known among Western culture, and it's all thanks to Miyasaki's outstanding work on this film. Because the Spirit world is fully fleshed out, Chihiro gets the chance to meet and interact with a wide array of important figures in the story, all distinct and interesting in their own ways. Chihiro's road to maturity is shaped by every spirit she meets, and every complex location she visits. The music and visuals are at the top of their game once again, and the only reason I left off half a star is because of the slight oddity of the spirits' behavior, but that is a minor nitpick on such a good addition to Ghibli's catalog."

All I would add upon that is that Chihiro is a little annoying at the beginning, and is not as likable as the other side characters, but becomes a lot more likable as the film progresses.
Studio Ghibli transcends the moniker of "anime."

It's one of the greatest films ever made, not just in the animation category. Few if any films can compete with its creativity, and no film is better described as magical.

I was 18 or 19 the first time I watched it. Still it gave me a big feeling of nostalgia.

It won a friggin Oscar. Takes a hell of a lot for an anime film to even be noticed by the Academy.
It's also hailed by top critics as one of the greatest animated films in history.

It is good, but not my favorite ghibli movie. (But not because its some well written "isekai". It was never written or intended as a isekai. Thats community stupidity)

It was a charming female protagonist and mesmerizing atmosphere (not really uncommon for a ghibli film). world building is decent, but as I watched more anime, I did found yokai anime like this one very commen in japanese media. This one doesnt stand out as break through from those yokai types. But I did found this one more captivating than ghibli most well acclaimed anime princess Mononoke.

So neither mid nor masterpiece. Some where inbetween
