Old man is sad with his life. He's old, he's discontent, he loves his dog. One day he goes to the park, an alien spaceship accidentally kills him, so they remake his body, he becomes a machine. Bodily and spiritually.

Same thing happens to the young dude. This guy is more machine than the old man, no humanity in this guy. So he kills people to see if he has any feelings from his crimes, which he doesn't, he's an apathetic, unemotional machine.

Old man's daughter loves this dude. He doesn't kill her, she's very lucky.

And then fast forward this guy basically wants to commit genocide on all of humans. He wants to hijack a super satellite weapon to kill all human on Earth. So the old man has to stop this maniac, final battle happens in space. Old man sacrifices himself, he becomes the hero.

That's the gist of the story iirc. It has more nuances about the one's life meaning and humanity and such.
Anime is fun.

Can anybody confirm if the maniac guy also became some sort of hero while trying to destroy the asteroid?

A deeper meaning could be that the power given to different individuals can be used differently and the story behind the characters affect the choices they would make, idk been a while since I watched it

For real!
Instead of being horrified, I laughed at those scenes. I kinda feel guilty for it.

I absolutely loved this series. This is from the same author as Gantz, and this dude knows how to write unique and interesting sci-fi stories. I thought everything was explained adequately, the story was really good, love the fact that the MC is an old man, and the CGI was just fine even though whiny babies like to complain every time there's 3D animation.

I second this.

I usually dont like 3D, but in this case it was well used, like in Goblin Slayer or Platinum End.

It was a weird anime and quite a ride, I liked it a lot. Ending was predictable thou, but there wouldnt be a better way to end it. Id like to see an alternate ending where Hiro suggests they use the water from the atmosphere for a last stand, and they almost make it but not quite, so Hiro kicks oldman away and selfdestruct, destroying the remaining asteroid so that old man could go home and live a normal life. Other alternative I'd like to see is dog being also a robot(it was at the park too) and joining in to save em all. But those would be cliche good endings, and the sacrificial bittersweet ending we got is honestly the best road. If Hiro and Oldman joinded and both survived it would just be cheesey.

Anyways, id give a 9/10.
