I watched 6 episodes, I can barely remember a single thing about it except bitter disappointment after Episode 3 (as another has mentioned).

It started ok, got terrible really fast, dropped it like it was radioactive :p

To most people, yes, but for people who have played the game, it'd say it's pretty good. This is because instead of it just being a retelling of the events in the game, it gives different perspectives on the scenario and tells the story in a way that was not possible in the game itself. This makes it a really good adaptation, imo. (An example of how this was adapted well is with the main character, who in the game is just a dull silent protagonist for the player to project onto. In the anime, he's given character traits, a personality, and a uniquely significant role that I won't spoil)

However, that's only if you've played the game, which most people who've watched this anime haven't. As a standalone anime, I get the feeling that it isn't very comprehensible with odd pacing and things that seem really out of place or don't make sense.

Since it can't standalone as its own anime that can be enjoyed separately from the game, unlike similar jrpg adaptations like Persona 4A, I'd say the the general consensus is that it is overall not that good.

Unfortunately, due to some really poor design elements in The Caligula Effect, it's a massive slog to get through and most people wouldn't even want to finish it (unless you're like me and you love the songs so much that you force yourself to play to hear all all the musicians' themes and their remixes). It's unfortunate since i think the scenario, themes and characters are extremely well written, on the same level as more well known JRPGs, and it's so unique with it's themes that you'll rarely get other games that tackle them in the same way.

The anime doesn't flesh out the characters as much, especially the musicians, which is unfortunate as the remaster of the game has an alternate route where you can side with them and learn their individual backstories and motivations. The character that suffers the worst from this in the anime is SweetP, who's true identity is treated like a joke about a generic creepy lolicon guy, but in the game her/his character episodes are in fact a pretty sad commentary on transmorphia and ageism, and how society will always treat his desires as taboo no matter how progressive people try to be.

When I watched the anime I enjoyed it because it felt like a quick recap of the story elements, a.k.a the best parts, of the game without all the tedious dungeon crawling and repetitive battles, all from new perspectives. But you won't be able to enjoy it like that if you haven't played the game.
