THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I think pretty much everything was tied up and I could not ask for a better conclusion. Its been a long ass time since an anime has made me this emotional. Thank you Anno and everyone at Khara for their hard work. Goodbye Evangelion... |

And all comes to an end. Even Evangelion that is. The sheer imagery and how gorgeous the art and scenery clearly shows the effort that went into this finale and I couldn't ask for more. Albeit the end pairing is a shocker or I'm just ignorant that the fact that they ended up together is just one key bias nitpick of mine. They did well for a finale and the ending is really what eva is about. Literally they just make evangelion end like and evangelion should end. Favorite parts of the movie are the Gendo and Shinji Confrontations across eva timelines and settings (even misato's room), Asuka berserk scene and ofcourse the evangelion-esque ending that wraps up each character's conflicts along with the train symbolisms and callbacks |

Pretty great, but tbh some scenes didn't really have me emotionally invested. It's a good end to the rebuilds's which in all honestly I haven't enjoyed as much as the OG anime. |

OK I just finished the movie and so the recency bias is strong but still hear me out. I think this was an amazing finale! Really good. I feel like the imagery and symbolism at the end weren't nearly as good as The End of Evangelion but at least they tried and it was good enough to be a callback to the original series without spoiling too much. They already did EoE so copying it would be essentially remaking it which I don't think would've been a good idea so I'm fine with this decision. If you watched it I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. I loved the first hour or so of the movie after 16 minutes of runtime with the SOL-esque segment. Might be my favorite aspect of the movie and it wasn't heavy on action scenes or high on philosophy and such (it was mostly done through subtlety). The CGI fight scenes were pretty good. But I probably think that because lately I'm getting more used to anime using CGI. CGI can be a bit hit or miss for people but for me it didn’t take away from the experience much. Near the end they start using "normal" 2D animation for the Eva fights more and those scenes really stand out because of this so I think it was a good thing. The CGI Eva fights were still good in their category I'd say. This movie might be peak Shinji character development (I've only consumed the anime material and know vague spoilers of the manga). The interaction he had with his father is probably also one of my favorite parts of Evangelion in general. The ending in general was great, though I'm a bit sad my bs ship didn't sail I kinda expected Sakura Suzuhara (Toji's sister) to end up with Shinji or something, I wasn't expecting Mari to fill such an important role. Mari was a good character in this movie I guess but amongst the other Eva pilots of "Child"s she stands out the most mainly because she's such an enigma compared to the others. I'm not sure if that's by design but I personally didn't like that aspect of her much. IF you're expecting something like the original NGE or EoE from this movie, especially the ending then you might be disappointed. At the same time it might even exceed your expectations. Depends on the person. This movie might change NGE for you forever so if you were planning to rewatch it soon you may want to do it before watching this movie at least once. Goodbye, all of Evangelion. At least for the foreseeable future. I'm ok with this being the ending since it was done so well. I thought it'd complete 3.33 and the Rebuild series but it actually completes Eva as a whole. Obviously I'm very happy. But I'm also a bit sad. I can't tell if I'm more happy or more sad. Time will tell what was the case, maybe. If the End of Evangelion was chaos and despair then Thrice Upon a Time was peace and closure. Sort of like an anti-thesis. Not a surprise considering the circumstances of Hideaki Anno from the past to his current form. My only real nitpick is they didn’t play A Cruel Angel's Thesis in any form but I think I can forgive it. I'd like to thank Anno and everyone in his team in studio khara and old gainax for creating Evangelion and congratulate them for reaching so far even though I don't know any of their names. |

For me was a perfect movie. At the first hour, with all the info delivered, I was already satisfied and whatever happened after would be still a good movie. But, things just kept better. So technically Mari is 50~ years old. Who just made her more mysterious. I know that was strange movie when I realized that I don't hate any character in the end Long Hair Ayanami is just too beautiful. The fan-service was great was incredible. Be ecchi fanservice or original fanservice. And I liked the experimental animation small parts. |

Man I’m so sorry, but way too much CGI, especially the Ayanami scene. Why would they do that? Who thought it was a good idea to make big Ayanami’s face in CG? That was so horrible I couldn’t even look at it. Unfortunately all of this influenced my experience greatly. Story wise was pretty good and ending was fine. Expected way more from the long awaited finale. 8/10 |

Damn, did they really confirm Shinji x Mari with that ending? Maybe my memory is failing me, but I don’t remember there being any hints toward that ship at all in the last three movies, so it felt like it came out of nowhere. And I would’ve been happy with either a Rei or Asuka end too… That aside though, I thought it was a mostly satisfying conclusion, definitely much more palatable than the original ending at least. |

I can't stop the tears Evangelion means so much to me and I honestly couldn't be happier with this movie. Although as an Asuka fan the ending took me by surprise, but I am still incredibly satisfied with it. I only recently finished the manga and I am so glad I did so, Thank you Anno and Sadamoto for making this franchise what it is today and farewell Eva, I hope this isn't one last goodbye. |

What a ride it was after all these years. Asuka had me crying. I wish there was a little more shown about the occurrences with Mk. 6 and Lilith calling back to the events of the end of You Can (NOT) Advance however, the preview snippets for 3.33 from 2.22 still remain true even though its just a bunch of teases. The cell-like animation with Eva 13 vs Eva 01 was amazing, too bad some of it seemed a little too blurred. It is definitely the long awaited conclusion but I can't help but want more about what is teased about the aftermath of (Near) Third Impact. I'm also very curious about how the original preview from the end of Q would've been incorporated and how much of the initial drafts were changed or what was in mind when they made that back then. I watched the Hideaki Anno documentary about making this movie back in like March or April (whenever it was released) and it was very intriguing seeing all that and I like how they used their brainstorming area in the movie. |

Unsurprisingly since I'm not a fan Eva fan at all, the movie was a mess for me but hey, at least I prefer this over 3.0 easily. My favorite rebuild movie is still the 2.0 one, the only entry of Eva that I find to be alright. Got to say, ending took me by surprise a little there. |

Red. Dark red. Blood. Blood flooded the ground. Covering the scene with an uncomfortable light. The moment each breath was restrained by the sound of the guitar, the space whirled in the dance of fire flowers. The mind goes crazy, trying to keep up with everything that is happening in front of them. Asuka and Shinji's 14 years are still there, but their 14 years of youth will be lost forever. Even if Asuka still cares about Shinji, still watching his every step, every sleep, their relationship will only be like the remnants of a day gone. I watched it 2 times in theaters. Maybe those epics won't appear on the small computer screen. But because of Mari - Sakamoto Maaya I will watch it a few dozen more times. |

This movie was a pretty-looking mess from start to finish, but I personally liked some of the different approaches here compared to the original Eva series, hence why this was honestly the most enjoyable Eva edition for me, even though I still had a less positive impression overall. I liked more of the spotlight being on Mari instead of Asuka this time around as well as the reveal with the latter being likely a part of a clone series as well (sadly not given much time to dive further into that). Asuka was also sacrificed instead, another interesting change. As for the ending, as a bit cheesy as it was, I heavily preferred it over the original apocalyptic conclusion, and it saved the film for me to a certain extent. It gave the surviving characters a do-over, a proper path in life that the existence of the EVAs denied them of. As much as I didn't like Shinji personally, it was nice to see him much older and onto a better-looking future along with Mari. Again, I'm not a fan of Eva as a whole and how it utilizes its cast and ideologies, but for once, even if it's the first and last time, I can finally mention some positives. No regrets there. P.S. The ending theme was REALLY nice. |

As a standalone movie and ending to the rebuild series, it is indeed interesting; but as an ending for the whole franchise, the movie is a complete disaster and horrendous. It made the series and "The End of Evangelion" completely redundant. It destroyed it |

Overall great movie was amazing visuals, even the ones that cause seizures. The ending however was a bit disappointing. The overall Mari x Shinji didn’t make any sense since they practically had no chemistry with each other. Would’ve preferred an ending with Rei since the rebuild movies seemed to have planned to ship those two in the earlier movies but was like “fuck you”, plans changed. And what happened to Asuka? Did Asuka really just die without much of a purpose? I mean I guess it was revealed that Asuka was a clone after all but it lead to even more mysteries. |

damn Mari (the old geezer because of the Curse of Eva) ended up with Shinji but im not complaining since she is sexy seductive anyway Shinji be like new world (Neon Genesis) so new life and new waifu Asuka x Kensuke and Rei x Kaworu are the end game too the father and mother of Shinji rewritten the whole multiverse (including the End of Evangelion universe) without evangelions and angels huh but im kind sad they did not fully explain the Curse of Eva besides that its like Eternal Youth and then who is Mary Iscariot ye she is Mari but damn some background or context is needed for that |

Easy 10/10.A beautiful way to end a masterpiece and I love how he meets Mari at the beach + the reference to the og series was great, in the last 2 eps how there was a lack on animation. Also they did the characters justice with Kaworu and Rei getting together & Shinji and Mari taking their next step into a 'beautiful world'. Overall a great movie exploring what it means to become an adult and taking responsibility, since Shinji's father couldn't accept Yui leaving him but at the end he finally saw her off just like how Anno couldn't accept how Evangelion originally ended so here he gave the entire series'one last kiss'. |

This is a lot to digest. It appears the loop theory was true after all. Some questions that will be keeping me up tonight: Shinji telling Rei he is going to create a "Neon Genesis" where Eva's don't exist has me stumped. Why display the quick images of the original series when the world they end up in at the end is not NGE. Why is Mari not present in the original series when she was an acquaintance of Gendo and Yui, and took some sort of part in the development of Eva's? (correct me if im wrong) Why was Asuka a series of clones? What happened to the first Asuka Shikinami? Was she a real human originally? Imaginary Lilith? |

Fucking loved it, start to finish. It was everything I wanted and even more. It stands equal with EoE on a purely artistical level. EoE remains unique for me because of the sheer surprise when I first watched it. I was ready for Shin eva. That said, I found it perfect. It was what Anno wanted, I think: entertaining as fuck, but also deep, philosophical, with meta narration, references to his art and beautifully animated. I won't forget this experience, ever. |

Genuinely the funniest shit I've seen. I don't care what anyone says; knockoff CG porno game Rei head gave me whiplash. The best parts were the handdrawn animation and the candid, personal scenes. The worst parts were the CG/mechfights. Funny because Miyazaki, so many years ago, told Anno his best work is the candid stuff. Also, I seriously was not expecting the name drop of "Neon Genesis." Caught me off guard so much. I always joke with friends about "He has become the Neon Genesis Evangelion" and I was absolutely not expecting something similar to happen. Everything about this felt like a massive fuck you to everyone who watches anime, and I loved every second of it. In a massive twist, this feels like a genuine conclusion to NGE on a meta level. Anno strikes again, and I can't wait to see what the madman does next in life. |

The ending was great, it's definitely better tha how EoE ended. As an Evangelion fan, I could not ask for a better conclusion. I wasn't expecting Shinji ending up with Mari though. I thought it will be Sakura since when Shinji went back to the ship with Asuka, Sakura was so worried about him. So I was like maybe Sakura likes him? But no,it was Mari all along. But I have no issues with that, Mari is my 2nd best girl behind Asuka. |

WHERE TO EVEN BEGAN ... The very strong opening scene of the movie same as with the third movie. After that the entire colony part was absolutely brilliant, so many familiar faces living completely different lifes in this devastated world, just like that ... the worlds ending but we have this happy and dany people living their best, no matter how bad it is as long as you continue living thats what it means to be human. What a fantastic piece, Jesus that was good. Asuka transformation scene was fucking epic WOW. The music, the entire act of sacrifice of one last time. Gendo truly a mastermind, planning all this since the second movie, we got played like a damn fiddle, it all made sense with Asuka being the trigger. The "final duel" between Gendo and Shinji was in the spirit "i didn't even used 10% of my full power" lmao. Also it is finally confirmed, no more speculations, manga is/is not canon bullshit theories and what no .. now we KNOW that Makinami was there from the very beginning, she was the one who introduced Gendo to Yui, she knew Shinji's mother all along. And Shinji waiting as a literal last man in the world/in the anime for Maki, wow ... was just adorable. What a great piece of cinematography. This movie truly feels from the very beginning to the very end as one big Thank you, and Goodbye. So yes, Thank you, and Goodbye Mr. Anno Hideaki, you fucking did it ya madlad. 10/10 my third ten rating since forever. This is why i watch anime. This. And the finale with all of them grown up and all, oh man fucking brilliant. |

Liked it overall I guess. All the screwed up stuff this movie did with the lore of Evangelion aside (seriously, it made little sense and I just rewatched the other rebuilds before watching this, but maybe that was the point). If you think about it, this is basically the same ending as EoE - only way more overt with the message, it's mostly the same message too, about escapism and accepting who we are and feeling pain in order to appreciate the good etc'. Visually it's reminiscent of the NGE manga ending but the actual essence of it is the same as EoE. But it's kinda shoved down your throat while at the same time made more applicable for an older audience by infusing it with accepting loss and seeing more of Gendo's perspective this time. In EoE Shinji also rejected instrumentality and got affection from Asuka on the beach as a result - only it was done without any dialogue and I guess the message flew over people's heads. Which is why Anno said once that he failed to communicate his message with NGE and now he set out to make it more clear for a general audience. I admit, I appreciate the attempt to grow up with your audience (I was 16 when I watched NGE and now I'm 33), but I just wish the message was delivered in a more subtle and mature way as well if that's what he was going for. 8/10 For now. Need to sleep on it and think about it for months I guess. |

KazuKotomine said: Rei" was good in this too bad she can never get a good ending in any timeline though Her ending "with" Kaworu at the end .. her being the last and at the same time first eva and Kaworu the last and first adam. I think that was a nice touch. KazuKotomine said: Didn't expect to see anyone mention shipping Sakura with Shinji which is probably my choice out of all the girls, i thought they had good chemistry in this and 3 and was thinking they might develop something in this film between them but they just gave them a few scenes and skipped her at the end which was disappointing, their relationship would have been interesting considering how Shinji's actions have impacted her life and also her being his friends younger sister now the same age as him, she did have some anger towards him but still cared for him showed in scenes where she shouts then cries but they chose Mari who barely interacted with him at all and I didn't feel any connection between them but that's just how I felt I think the movie did let us know what we needed to know in regards to Shinji x Maki, the bits at the end where we can see Makinami in Gendos memories, as she was with Yui when she gave birth or when she introduced Gendo to Fuyutsuki and Yui. I know it has nothing to do with Shinji directly but it definitely gives a lot of importance to her character. See below. But i also think Anno could have done more in there, maybe Yui said something to Mari that made her so fixated to Shinji we dont know. But than again Anno never really gave us a lot of answers we always needed to look for them ourselves. |

It has been so long, i think Evangelion was the first one that got me into watching anime. Really like the finale and so impressed how someone can make such crazy stories again and again. Been a while watching 2.5 hours, but the animation was out of this world so nothing to complain. Necessary Asuka shots, thank you =/ The scene she was trying to kill 13th angel!!! This is just the inverse for End of Eva lol The whole reveal with Makinami was cool but I'm just weirded out with her and Shinji at the end. I thought they'd interact way more in this last movie. Didn't get it. Ofc Misato f*cking dies..... Hated the CG for Unit 1 vs Unit 13. I liked it when it scaled down in prominent locations but super dissapointing for the most part. I liked how they handled Kaworu. The idea that he wanted Shinji to be happy, so that he could find happiness in his infinite cycles was beautiful. Best character. Great movie. Just a bunch of minor stuff holding it back. Now to rewatch and look at reddit to find stuff I missed. |
