Kinnikuman really sucks, but he can do it if he tries. Wanted to a watch this for a while since I heard it's the grandpa of traditional battle shounen and I'm interested to see what's this all about for myself. |

| Well... that was an episode. NGL, probably gonna revisit this anime at a later date, since this episode didn't do anything for me. More or less felt like Dr Slump in terms of humor, which that anime just didn't do much for me either. Guess Kamiya Akira's talent ain't saving this one for me. Also, that music that plays when Kinnikuman uses his Kinniku Beam, that's like the same music that plays in Urusei Yatsura from time to time, isn't it? If it's not original to that or this anime, then I wonder what sound library Toei and Pierrot got it from? |

| Watching this as a fan of classic wrestling this was incredible. Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Bruiser Brody, and Tiger Mask in a session of the Japanese Diet while it debates who is stronger: Antonio Inoki or Giant Baba. xD But it was the second I saw Harley Race that this show stole my heart. Little personal story: I went to one of his wrestling camps years ago. He did NOT like training girl wrestlers. Then he saw me doing a clothesline he really liked and he said "You're alright kid". And coming from a gruff, tough as nails old man like Harley that was like winning the Nobel Prize in wrestling. He was very much your "man of few words" of that generation (he was born in 1943).The wrestling references are everywhere, but seeing Harley got the biggest pop from me. Aside from that I really enjoyed the gags. The animation looks a little dated even by 1983 standards, but the visual style reminds me a lot of 1960s stuff, which has a ton of charm. The voice acting, particularly Kinnikuman himself, is also great. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this, and I hope it will keep showering me with obscure wrestling references. Brilliant first episode. |
