I've been seeing a lot of the "harem endings suck" comments on here. I'm just curious how they are bad and what makes them bad. It feels very nitpicky and I don't want a show to go down due to something as small as that. Can someone help me understand why "harem endings" are bad?

Normally in harems, everyone picks a side or more specifically a girl. They will root for that girl and hope that she wins. Since the whole premise of a harem is girls competing for a guy or vice versa, it is really frustrating when you have no idea who ended up with who. It’s like watching your favorite sports team and rooting for them the whole season and then they make it to the finals and you have no idea who won. It kinda just feels like a waste of time

Most of the times it's an open ending without a definitive winner because of reasons (sometimes the Anime cancelled before it adapts the ending like Nisekoi or the source itself is an open ending) and sometimes the girls in a harem are one dimensional type of character.

Honestly I think it can only be called a true harem when the MC ends up with all the girls. That's the literal definition of harem, like in Highschool DxD.I haven't read a lot manga or light novels but I definitely would like these types of stories better if we got to see the MC marry all the girls at the end.

Harem Endings are bad because they’re NOT harem endings.
I know, it sounds dumb and redundant, but that’s the main reason.
The appeal and original premise is different from the overall execution.
When a lot of girls are introduced just to end up with the predictable very boring climax of first girl victory regardless of popularity or lack of character development makes the whole journey a complete waste of time.
The author over abuses the harem concept and then decides to not choose anyone is a kick in the balls for the experience.
Harem premise with an actual harem ending are beloved most of the times because fully embraces the idea and does not shy away from it.
Sadly you hardly ever find those, unless you are talking about erotic LN or OffBrand Anime.

It’s really unsatisfying to not see who the mc ends up with. It makes shows like oregairu (even though it’s not harem) so wholesome and satisfying to see the mc end up with the girl compared to the rest.

if what you mean by “harem ending” is the protagonist not picking any particular character to be with, the reason I think that they are bad is because the protagonist just ends up rejecting them all or cheating on all of them. When the protagonist picks one of them it also gives a sense of closure like the story actually got finished completely.

Because people need to make it a competition that can't be satisfied without a winner lol, although, some are competitive tbf. Harem end is always a right route for most harems tho. It just makes sense.

Absolutely. Every romance should give us a clear winner or at least solid indications of a clear winner. Leaving everything open just feels so pointless and feels like the author was afraid of giving a true ending. Oregairu is a perfect show in this matter because even though the 2 girls are really popular and beloved by the public they gave us a clear winner and it was satisfying af.

Honestly it's crazy how authors just seem to hate their audience sometimes when it comes to conflicts like this I swear they always try to choose the most illogical ending, quints where it just didn't make sense to me and most of the fanbase from a story perspective, I didn't think my favorite girl would or made sense to win over one of the others in all honesty (won't say who because spoilers) but the ending we got to one of the best harem series IMO was actually so disappointingly bad and illogical that I would've just preferred separate routes or harem end and it still annoys me. Maou sama ending was just out of nowhere, like it's just so odd to me. You build up only to have the one with no build-up become the victor or you end up having a shell of what you originally had in the first place. Let's see how the results go in Osamake, not sure who I'm rooting for honestly, I haven't gone past episode 6 but I'd be fine with either Kuro or Shiro at this point unless they do some stuff that makes me dislike them, but I just hope it has a satisfying and LOGICAL conclusion.

yeah that does seem like the best way to continue it if needed. But not a good ending

I f*ckin love oregairu man. Literal embodiment of “don’t be sad that it’s over, be happy that it happened” I can’t wait for the ova.
