Does anyone even care now... I was interested in this too after watching the anime but after seeing the pitiful state of this novel I can only shake my head and sigh... Is it even still publishing or does anyone even know how many volumes have come out in Japan now.

The novel ends at vol. 17 and if anyone's looking for spoilers about Sakurako X Shotaro then here it is:

This comes straight from Sakurako subreddit btw. Someone is translating it in English there so go check out r/Sakurako if you wanna read it.

Thanks, but damn disgusting ending. If this were every other Josei/Shoujo Manga/LN, the two MC will definitely get together. Glad I didn't pick this up

who the fuck cares?
this isn't a fucking romance but a mystery novel series. i fucking hate it when they try to fucking push romance into mystery or any serious series. its a great thing especially since the romance genre is oversaturated as fuck. which is why shows like kaiji, and jojo are so popular nowdays.

gonna pick it up purely because of no romance.

You're right. This isn't a romance series but a mystery and expecting romance out of such a series is wrong. But adding little bits of romance here and there and showing some chemistry between the MCs, ending with them not being together is disappointing, especially for long-running series. Also just adding a bit of romance at the end to make them end up together gives a nice closure to people who read it for so long without making it a romance series or pushing the romance as you say. I agree that there are many series in which doing so will not suit the overall theme of the story, but in this case there was already some form of romance sprinkled here and there from the start.

Personally, I wouldn't have minded if the fiance got more screen time and we got to know him better. In the end, some unknown dude who's been mentioned like twice as FMC's fiance comes and takes FMC away and readers are left feeling NTRed. I believe most people think the same way cause the Japanese reviews of the last vol. on Amazon said that the ending was bittersweet cause the MCs didn't end up together.

Personally, I'm glad they didn't end up together. Sakurako doesn't really strike me as the type to fall in love and end up together with Shoutarou. Other than the fact he is underaged and six years younger than her, and the fact that she isn't the type to fall for someone she sees as her dead younger brother, she never saw him in a romantic light. I think Shoutarou doesn't even see her in a romantic light. According to those that read the novel, the anime exaggerated Shoutarou's feelings for her. He may see her as physically attractive, like any other boy his age, and the anime made him blush at times, but other than that, he really didn't show any romantic interest in her. He does wish to understand her and he does care for her, and she sees him as an important part of her family, and that's just who they are to each other.

I'd like it if they continue being friends, they do enjoy each other's company. I hope the anime would continue with a second season so we could be introduced to her fiancee, and see their dynamic with each other. But as of now, I like the storyline as it is.
