Recommendation time!

Seirei no Moribito is a series with some similarities. Basically Balsa is a wandering spearwoman and bodyguard whom takes up the job of protecting the son of the emperor, Prince Chagum, from the emperor himself. I'm not the best at explaining what its about but it is a must watch, it contains some of the best animation/artwork i've seen before, and its great overall.

I'd recommend Stranger - Mukoh Hadan
It's such a beautiful story about friendship.

While it's not a story along the same lines as Kure-nai, Brains Base (the animation production studio for Kure-nai) has also done Kamichu! which I'm currently in the process of watching and think would appeal to fans of Kure-nai. It's a very cute series about a middle school girl who becomes a god and has some gorgeous looking art and animation.

I also definitely second Seirei no Moribito which I've just gotten into as well. The directing and animation in episode 3 were incredible and I hope it continues to be as great.

I would recommend Red Garden for those who like the character design in Kure-nai.
But the story and mood of the series are very different.

Haibane Renmei is another very good drama about a girl trying to find her way in an unfamiliar world.

Like in Kure-nai, the two main characters in Haibane Renmei (Rakka and Reki) develop a close bond over the course of the series. The Habanes are poor as well, like Shinkuro was, with everything they buy being rationed.
