I just finished this ONA series and for the life of me cannot understand why people are comparing it to the likes of Ex-Arm and saying it is just as bad. I genuinely think the CGI in this show is really expressive and fits the style they were going for perfectly.

Even just from the trailers alone, you can tell that Eden has way better animation and art direction than Ex-Arm.

First up is Eden and you can see multiple different kinds of lip flaps and them trying to match it to different syllables. Instead of typical lip flaps, they actually try to lip-synch. This is something that only rarely happens in 2d animation in general and this happens all the time in Eden.

Here is Ex-Arm and how it handles lip flaps/lip-synching. And it always does this. There is no variation in the lips what so ever and the character even has expressionless eyes that convey no emotion.

Neither of the trailers showcased a ton of background shots but here is one from each for comparison in style.

Eden Zero Background shot

Ex-Arm background shot

If you need more examples I can find some more from the actual shows themselves instead of just the trailers but I think these speak clearly enough. Ex-Arm is filled with tons of horrible animation that doesn't understand how CGI or even 2D animation fundamentally works. Where while Eden isn't perfect it clearly has a lot more expression in its animation instead of being lifeless while instead, having actual character acting.

CGI here is not bad but excessive. It is good when used on robots but not so good or even really bad when used on humans. Doctor Something looked so ugly that it was almost funny.

I don’t think the problem is necessarily the CGI. While the CGI isn’t great, it definitely isn’t bad. The problem is that with Eden having rather, in my opinion, incompetent story, characters, and writing, the CGI definitely doesn’t do anything to help the show. I think if the writing was actually, you know, good, then people would look past the CGI, however, since that isn’t the case, the CGI is just one more thing about Eden that makes it harder to enjoy.

Edit: Also people just like to complain.

While I personally enjoyed the story 90% of the complaints you can tell are just really about the "bad" CGI. Every review on the main page besides the one giving it a 9/10 complains about the animation in the first 2 sentences and then move onto other stuff, and then have their own section saying how bad the CGI is. The forum thread with the trailer is people mostly complaining about the CGI. People went in wanting to dislike it because of the CGI. Like comparing it to Ex-Arm is a joke.

I don't find it perfect in fact I agree it is quite rushed in parts, but it was clearly a passion project and literally this studio's first and only work at this moment in time. Honestly, I found it to be a pretty great starting point for a new studio. A lot of studios first shows are terrible.

Not even close. Japan creates good CG models but animates them terribly. The animation in Eden is far above most of the pure CG animation I've seen from Japan lately. Dragon Quest Your Story was amazing though.

I agree I was quite impressed with how much movement was actually in this show and how expressive it was without feeling awkward. It is rare to see an anime move this much including in movies.

Agreed. Eden is easily one of the most fluidly animated completely CG projects to emerge from Japan, even including movies. Look at the Godzilla CG anime movies or Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045. I'm curious about this Qubic Pictures and CGCG Studios that animated Eden.

Honestly, I think the only two series I have seen that might be better animated overall are from studio orange with Beastars and Land of the Lustrous. I am quite curious as well especially if they continue to get Kevin Penkin to do the ost. It was a really nice fit for this short series. I really enjoyed the fluidity since it is so rare for anime. I like anime with its limited animation and awesome sakuga but getting stuff like Eden is also nice.

Honestly. Some people will see any CGI anime that isn't like houseki no kuni and think it's ex arm, like show these people rwby or gen lock and they'll just cry about how it looks like ex arm (I've seen this happen in tiktok comment sections

I think people see cgi and right away just hate it because it looks different from what they are used to. It is similar to why some people don't even get into anime in the first place. It is something different and people like to stay in their comfort zone.

In favor od Ex-Arm I can say they at least applied more natural skin tones.

This show had pretty decent CGI I think. Granted, I don't really have a frame of reference but there's nothing so offensively bad about this show's CGI that takes you out of the experience. Imperfect ? Sure. But if you've watched anime for any length of time you should be used to it by now.

I haven't really watched either but yea the CGI does look alive and expressive in this one, I guess the real problem people have is the art design.

Skin tone seems pretty much the same in both series to me and the only thing that makes Ex-Arm look a bit worse skin tone wise in my opinion is how poor the lighting is most of the time. It being incredibly bright makes the skin tone come off way more pale than skin should be. Some actual examples where it looks unrealistic in Eden would be nice but at least in my gifs above Eden has a much more realistic skin tone.

That's because it did not emerge from Japan. They hired chinese studios to produce animation for the show.
