Really loved it. Was quite epic for being so short. The intensity from Rheindars at the end was...well...intense.

Liked the main character, amazing animation and the ending was very good. The female lead felt too theatrical... didn't like the forced romance at all.

A little bit of action and romance in it's 20 minutes plus duration. It was short but I liked it still.

Coz he's right here! ...and he's fresh out of mercy.

you get a pilot marked as a coward to escort THE MOST IMPORTANT CARGO KNOWN TO MAN.

And Maetel - I mean Melhenna - says "if we didn't build it someone else would" then moments later goes 180 :P Sheesh, typical woman eh. w/e, I'd rather someone else make some sort of decision, let the other guys drop it or something. At least my ass won't be going to hell.

Decent for 20 minutes despite my niggling. I appreciate the sentiment. Harlock should've died though. w/e, I let that spitfire kill all my friends and betrayed my country. At least I pwned his ass afterwards. I take care of (those that take care of) my dirty work like a Real Man.

What a fool.

Instead of serving his country, protecting his love and redeeming his honour he chooses death for all.

Rheindars chooses to lose everything to do what save American or British lives? He says he can live with his decision but as history shows the loss of the war was disastrous for Germany.

He might have saved a city's worth of lives but has directly caused suffering for every German as the famine, tyranny, oppression, poverty, inflation, etc followed Germany's unconditional surrender.

Had Germany at that point still had atom bombs they could have easily leveraged peace instead guaranteeing a better outcome for the German people.

There's nothing honourable about serving your country when that means helping your country in its role as the genocidal aggressor.

As for protecting his love, perhaps you missed the part where she said she wanted not to reach the base.

A better outcome for the German people, yes (those who weren't gay, disabled, politically inconvenient or ethnically undesirable anyway). And then everyone else would have had to suffer the way Germany did, only far worse since it would be Hitler with his finger on the button, the atrocities committed by the Nazis would be allowed to continue without resistance, Japan's atrocities in Asia too for that matter.

That said, I don't think any of the characters in this were actually critical of how their own country would act given the tools to win the war, it seems they were more concerned about the unacceptable nature of the weapon itself, it betrays the Japanese perspective from which it was written.

Great show for only 20 minutes long! It makes you think too - about using the A-bomb... We all know who was crazy enough to use it...

Even though Rheindars was called a coward in two separate occasions, the fact is he never sold his soul to the devil.

Great episode.

Well shit.. glad I discovered this obscure anime. Fantastic first episode and great atmosphere throughout.

I really REALLY miss this type of art style in anime. Brings me back to the good old days.

It was interesting to see how quickly an honourable pilot could become a coward from choosing what he felt was the right call at the time.

He couldn't bear the thought of a nuclear weapon being used, so he chose to let a spitfire take it out, while knowing that the woman he loved was onboard. He knew that's what she wanted, so he had no regrets, although I imagine one would get a little PTSD from an event like that.
