It's true that Chihaya didn't open up to no one about what happened between her and Taichi, while even Taichi confided in his 2 best friends.

So you are right in a way that Chihaya does keep certain things hidden away deep in her heart....I also feel that in the challenger and now in the finals we are most certainly getting a glimpse and bit by bit more of what really is in her heart....her feelings sort of are seeping through the seams.

I agree she may feel something for Arata, but her saying she liked Arata was way back in chapter 91. That was all the way back before Yoshino tournament, before both the guys confessed, and before Taichi left.

I understand what you're saying-the declaration was so long ago-but I don't see that as an issue. When it comes to Chihaya and her own romantic feelings, I'm looking at scenes to connect them in order to understand her heart a little bit more. Chihaya isn't focused on romance at the moment, we all know this-but that doesn't mean she doesn't subsciously have romantic thoughts because she does, she has. When Chihaya thinks about Arata during love talk (and she's completely aware of the topic) that's a peek into her heart and that's building in terms of storytelling-that's how I see it. When she declares that she doesn't understand these feelings but that she'll always love him and karuta (and love is the word used, not like) again to me, that's a peek into her heart and Suetsugu planting a seed. How she reacts after Arata confessed (bathed in light and glowing because something life-changing just happened) and poem 43 being used. A lot has happened since her love declaration indeed, both boys confessed their love-she reacted openly, honestly, and very different to each confession. Taichi was rejected swiftly on the spot (and we haven't had one scene of Chihaya regretting her decision as of chapter 235) while Arata's proper answer-whether it be reciprocation or rejection-has been postponed-I take this as Chihaya wanting to take her time to figure out what she feels for Arata and when she does know her answer/finally understands what she feels for him/is ready to give him the answer, she will. She's going at her own pace and Arata doesn't mind one bit. Everything is slowly falling into place,I can't and won't speak for every other reader who ships Chihaya x Arata, but I don't see her answer happening until the last volume or two.
The desire to be loved is the last illusion. Give it up and you will be free.

This is not entirely true though? If I'm not mistaken, the word used is "suki", both means like and love in Japanese. Some translation used love, some other used like. I've seen both. If she were to make it obvious that it's just love, not like, then she would've said "ai". Besides it's weird she put it in the same sentence. Arata is a person, not an object. She can't like karuta the same way she likes Arata.

I think you're forgetting the part where Chihaya's reaction to Arata's confession is not entirely "positive". She spent more than half a year forgetting about it, no? Only after she remembered she implied that she'll think about it again.
I do think she might have feelings for him, but it's not as obvious as you say.

Personally I would rather it have a trio ending, or maybe she ends up with one of the guys but not explicitly stated. Due to Chihayafuru's way of romance, more one-way romance and pining than two people actually interacting and dating, I think this is a bit more conclusive for me. Maybe they all three walk together, but Chihaya only holds one boy's hand, indicating that she's leaning on to one guy romantically and not the other. This is one of the few parts from the live action movies that I actually agree with. It feels more "Chihayafuru". I don't mind her ending up with Taichi or Arata, both are not surprising since the manga is so long already.

Chihaya definitely thought what she felt for Arata was love. There is a little funny hint that she made a "mistake".

In the 9 months that Taichi's left and even the 6 months after Arata had that scene with her at Omi jingu.... Chihaya had enough time to let it all sink in, let the feelings in her heart take form....I think at the Challenger we see the result of that, of the little preference in her heart, she's hiding, so neither boy really knows what's went on with her.

Taichi supported her again showing her Su, dream!! "As long as Taichi takes cards...", looking through that little window crying....it seems like again she can't help but root for one more than the other....and what about the others "dream"? Her subtle preference, shows where her heart lies.

Here in 229, the support of many people, but Taichi is definitely singled out with the card that made their whole adventure in highschool begin, the moment she felt most lonely, Taichi showed up and the time of her life began! The times she had most fun. Where she found her own new dreams to take a true form in the future, witnessed and supported by Taichi

In 234, her realisation is taken to a new level.

Yes Arata is her karuta hero, she loves him as a dear friend. Their bond just isn't like what she has with Taichi, what she learned about how she felt after he left, the void by her side, how hard she longed for him to come....her moment of stunned realisation while looking down at the cards on the tatami. Interesting cards btw.

Arata gave her a dream and changed both Chihaya's and Taichi's life but Taichi and Chihaya walked the path together. They all 3 will have had a great impact on eachother, that made them grow up and become the young adults they are now.

Let's see what author plan to do with Taichi.
"When they're alive, you can enjoy watching them struggle. When they're dead, you can enjoy tearing out their guts. Tales are things you get to enjoy twice."
