I mean, the twists in this anime are so random and so unintentionally (?) funny and ridiculous that with every episode I wonder if this is a hidden self-parody like 80s James Bond. If it were lewd and had more obvious humor, it would actually become Meiji Austin Powers.

This show is incredibly full of all sorts of references to other 60s or 70s adventure franchises, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was at least partially intentional.

The way I view it, I think it does take itself seriously but who knows

Well, the fourth episode almost convinced me of that. It was so full of completely random cliches (snakes? Seriously snakes? Is he fucking Thulsa-Doom or what?) That it was either an extremely lazy writing or, better, a funny reference to the grotesqueness of an old adventure fiction.

I hope you’re right. The only reason I’m still watching is the bizarre way they’ve handled... well, everything about it. I’m not sure I’m liking it for the reasons intended though.

Interesting insight. I’ll keep an eye out for this going forward. I’m unsure about this show now, after being excited for it initially. It built up and resolved a major plot line so quickly, I think it has people reeling a bit right now as a result.

The kuchinawa creature has had several iterations in anime, and always involves snakes. I was surprised to see a “legendary” creature appear like this suddenly in this particular show, but it’s not a new creation by any means.

I’m pretty sure it’s trying to take itself seriously. They were obviously trying to make us feel sorry for the MC (I forgot her name lol) because in episodes 4 and 5, they were putting a ton of (funny) emotional weight behind the scenes. If it was trying to be an “ it’s so bad it’s good show,” it would be more like Misfit of Demon King Academy, because in that show there was some kind of sense of self. While this show doesn’t have that. Additionally, a major arc was finished in 4 episodes. Must be shit-for-brains writing.

No need to overthink, it's just another uninspired anime promoted by Crunchyroll.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron
