I don't think either is particularly better but I wanted to talk about it nonetheless. I figured I'd just start a new topic (a decade later) in case anyone else wanted to discuss.

I watched the series the full way through last December. I liked Kintaro's (Japanese) voice. It was very high-pitched and scratchy, like a nerd, hehe.

I just finished Episode 1 for the second time and I plan to re-watch the series, however I'm watching it Dubbed this time around to get the best of both worlds.

Wow. Just wow. Kintaro's voice, hehe.

So the VA's name is Doug Smith it seems, and he's an obscure voice actor who's only been in a few animes. And you can kinda tell too. When voicing Kintaro, he sounds less like a voice actor and more like a human being attempting to voice the character. (There's a difference.) He almost sounds like someone you'd find in abridged animes. However, don't take anything I said as a negative connotation.

Doug Smith is absolutely hilarious. His voice initially sounds out of place (in the English Dub) but my God is it entertaining.

My recommendation: watch the sub first to experience the anime in terms of its highest production potential. And THEN, watch the anime a second time, DUBBED, for the sole purpose experiencing Doug Smith's hilarious delivery (while potentially picking up other miscellaneous detail you didn't capture the first time around).

I can't describe Smith's voice myself, but it's very goofy. After a few minutes went by, it starts to sound more fitting for Kintaro.

The most immense detail I can recall, though, is that it REALLY sounds like Doug Smith was allowed to have fun with his role. I mean you can tell he had a blast recording the lines. He may sound like (and be) an amateur, but his vocals have so much life and color to them. It's great. So, like I said before, this time around I'm watching more to experience the best of both worlds. I watched it for the plot and the comedy the first time around, but now I'm here to revel in the animation and the other trivial things.

Both versions of the anime are cool. But really, I just want to appreciate the obscure figure known as Douglas Smith. Godspeed.

I kinda prefer dub Kintaro over sub because he sounds a lot goofier and it matches his character better. Also, I don't know if its because he's speaking English and it gets to my brain faster than Japanese , but the jokes, remarks, and funny noises he make are all funnier to me in the dubbed version (in my opinion, ofc)

Probably one of the few dubs I've ever liked too
