Jeez they're really blowing through this. I was hoping to get Shiki in the anime for a while but it seems next week she'll be gone. I'm quite disappointed with the pacing but the visuals are awesome. To any anime onlies, please don't let this be your first or only experience with this story, please play the game. |

I can almost guarantee this will be a drop. The game is from 2007 ofc the music feels like it's late 2000s, i understand why it can be off-putting but you can't really count that as a flaw Yeah I probably shouldn’t have added that part because it made it appear on-par with the other things I was critcizing. It wasn’t really something that I would hold against this anime as compared to the other things I listed. While it has aged poorly, I’m not going to be too harsh on it because it can be seen as a form of homage to the game and the time period that it comes from. It isn’t better for it, but I can at least understand the thought process behind it which lessens my criticism somewhat. It hasn't aged poorly, it's just not your music taste. |

I actually quite like it so far. I was pleasantly surprised honestly. I have low expectations of anime series based on games or other media. I like how they used some soundtracks from the game. I really like the artstyle & animation too. 2 downsides so far is how I hoped neku would be a bit more antisocial & more of a dick. And that it seems quite rushed so far. Not sure why they'd wanna rush it. |

I've been waiting for this since the DS era. I understand the changes have been made so it would work in a anime setting, just like solo&final remix changes the holy dual screen to puny one screen gameplay. I'm suprised to say, the episode was rock solid. Art was fluid, music was, as always amazing yet people voted poorly. I wonder what they did not liked :/ As someone who played the game back in DS era, i give it a solid 10/10. (I've finished final remix too but honestly the controls were appaling) |

They abused the CGI but it's not that bad. The characters look amazing, but the direction is quite questionable. I would cut the action scenes and include more dialogue and Neku's thoughts. They are rushing things which is quite understandable they want to rush to the end of the first "arc" but I feel this would be a terrible first episode for someone coming blind and really hard to recommend to anyone. The fanboy inside me forgets these issues when Shiki is on-screen though.... She is perfect just as the day I met her. * . * 10 / 10 |

When I played the game, it seemed much more fun. However, I am bored to death watching the anime counterpart. The animation was pretty great and all, plus the stylish nature of the game is there. However, the pacing is so fast and something about it makes it way more boring than it should be. I don't think I will continue with this tbh. |

A lot of things to be said. For someone who played the game, the episode was still quite entertaining, and hearing the song "Calling" at the start was awesome, my favorite song of the game and brought me a lot of great memories. The artstyle is also great and faithful for the game. The action scenes leave a lot to be desired though. Using CGI for monsters is passable, but for characters as well? The movement looked very jarring and in slow motion, not real at all. This will be really a big problem if it stays the same because the combat system was the most important aspect of the game, and the main draw to it back then. Yes, the story was great and had some mind blowing twists, but the combat was what the game was advertised for so if the anime sucked in the fights it will bring this season down, a lot. I don't have a problem with the CGI when done right, but in this episode it really, really left a lot to be desired. On another hand I'm kinda worried about the pacing. First episode seemed to have covered 3 days already from the first week from what I remember? I hope they take their time when they come into the meat of things and don't rush it just like any anime based on a video game. |

....I've took my sweet ass time trying to collect all my excited and jumbled thoughts together... I even decided to watch the episode again just because lol... βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ Okay, let me start by stating this: As I'm sure you all can tell from my current forum set and this thread, I have played the game prior to watching this first episode. I expected some changes to be made and, as hard as doing this will be, I will try my best to not let the original game get in the way of my thoughts of this as an adaptation. First, since some fellow Players mentioned about how they removed Neku's monologue, I will include it here for the anime-onlys who are curious as to what they're talking about. This is not spoilery, don't worry, though it is kinda edgy but I will still put it in a spoiler tag just so it doesn't take up loading space for those who don't even care about this stuff. Japanese for the weebs who don't like dubs: This video is the closest thing I could find with the opening cutscene in the original DS version. Don't watch past 1:53 unless you want to see the game's original opening, "Twister". English for the weebs who don't want to read: .........damnit I already want to start playing this whole rollercoaster ride of a game again lol why do I do this to myself I am definitely a little concerned that they removed it though. βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ β βΆ But anyway, let's go over some big positives first. I gotta mention how great it is that this adaptation kept a very similar art style to the original game. It did take me a while to get used to all the bright and saturated colors, as the game had a fairly more muted color scheme in its presentation, but it does still look pretty solid and there's somehow some decently-animated scenes considering how difficult it seems to animate when the line art and shading is so stylized. I also like that a few of the poses from the original game actually appear in this episode, like when Shiki got startled from Neku or when Futoshi (the bun-hair guy possessed by the Negative Noise) I couldn't help but fangirl at hearing "It's So Wonderful" and "Calling" in this episode. It is sad that ALI and "Teenage City Riot" couldn't make it, but I don't mind hearing returning tracks from the original game every now and then. Especially since both of these songs are among some of my favorite OST in the whole game and probably in all of gaming, actually. Can we all just appreciate how awesome it is that they got the original composer back for this anime? The new original insert song when Beat and Rhyme arrived was pretty nice and I can't wait to hear some more brand new songs Ishimoto made for this adaptation. I also couldn't help but giggle at mentions of 777, Eiji Ouji, and Hachiko. XD Now, I think we've all addressed the serious elephant in the room—the pacing. Even those who have never played the game before noticed how fast this episode was... wow, three days in one episode... and it's already been confirmed that this will be a 1-cour show (sadly)... I guess I shouldn't have expected too much. There also seemed to be no time for stuff like the little attention to details that I obviously won't point out here, because 1) some people already mentioned them and 2) mentioning them myself could actually spoil this anime for the anime-onlys. If y'all want to hear stuff like that, I could just make a whole separate SPOILER discussion thread, like how the MAL forum mods did for Attack on Titan: Final Season. You kinda can't talk about the plot of this game/anime meaningfully without spoiling the crap out of it anyway. That aside, I'll just say that I was slightly disappointed over certain tiny removals and leave it at that. Neku's character is noticeably watered down, which is another thing everyone keeps pointing out. Some people pointed out that his character in the original Japanese version of the game is reportedly not as harsh as he seems in the English version, as some of the things he says and does (calling Shiki "you" instead of her name and just overall keeping quiet to himself) wouldn't necessarily come across as rude outside of Japan. That's why the English localization changed that to Neku calling Shiki "stalker" instead. But I can understand why so many Players still complained, because the fact that most of his inner monologue is nonexistent in this anime makes him come across as "not the same Neku" to these people. I am kinda on both sides, as I do know that anime viewers would've just bitched about him being so mean because people playing the game right now are still complaining about that even to this day lmao. I mean, there's still some debate whether Shiki not saying much about him literally choking her the previous day is considered letting it slide or not. It's not as big as the debates over two certain TV anime protagonists from last season (lol), but it is there if you look in places like r/TWEWY. Speaking of that scene, one of the few notable big changes in this anime is that Players can be possessed by noise now. I mean, I don't remember that ever happening in the game, and I certainly remember Neku willingly choking Shiki instead doing it while possessed in this first episode. "Why did he actually do that willingly" the anime-onlys might ask? Well...... go play the game for yourself :P Another notable change are the transitions between days. Neku gets dizzy, computer screen glitches are all over the screen, and then boom next day. Very interesting aesthetic change, but it just reminds me of Kingdom Hearts 2. In fact, watching the whole episode kinda felt like I was watching Kingdom Hearts cutscenes again lol. No, it's not cuz this is based off of a Square Enix game, I'm serious; watching the characters make some weird pauses between lines every now and then and the kinda-meh-feeling pace of lines or something was very reminiscent of KH cutscenes imo. Sorry, couldn't help but think of KH2 throughout this whole episode even though I played this game I love so much and I technically didn't play KH2 yet lol. Also day 3 starts at the usual Shibuya Crossing instead of inside the place where they beat up that bat Noise, interesting... Also couldn't help smiling at Shiki casually mentioning Death March, cuz Ishimoto eventually made a real band with a similar name btw :P Despite the crazy fast pacing and some little things, this first episode is overall not terrible. I dunno, I enjoyed myself and I'm willing to give the rest of this show a chance. Oh and no, I didn't mind the CG too much. THE 1ST EPISODE Shinigami's Game πππππππ ππππππ. |

I’ve watched playthroughs of a good chunk of the game, but never got to the end. That being said, I could tell this is speeding through the story pretty fast, but I still really liked it, and I kinda expected it to be fast paced lol since it’s a game adaptation. The art and animation have to be my personal highlights, I love the art style choice and it looks really good, CGI was pretty good too. Loved hearing some of the game ost since I am a big fan of it. And I also love Shiki’s VA, doing an amazing job. |

Although I understand where you're coming from. You need a good advertisement to advertise a good product. I honestly don't know, they might get it right but there's also a big chance they fuck it up completely. The combat system was integral part of the game and I didn't like any fight in this episode. The pacing also is quite worrying. Regarding the characters, in the game pretty much all of them get their development arcs. They aren't the deepest thing ever but all of them ended up having their own personalities and there are several twists regarding them that are hard to predict, but again, don't honestly know if they will manage to adapt these well or not. Very early to decide. But imo for any anime based on a video game it's just better to experience the story through the game as the definitive edition hands down. I liked Persona 4 anime, but I won't recommend it for anyone wanting to experience the story for the first time, better to play the game. The anime was entertaining as heck because of how hilarious it was and all the comedy but the pacing was very awkward and it seemed to depend on you knowing the events first to fill the gap, making it impossible to stand on its own. I didn't watch Persona 5 anime because I felt I got my enough from my 103 hours playthrough but I'm pretty sure it's the same. I kinda have a feeling I will get the same feeling regarding this one though we won't know for sure till we see for ourselves. Regardless, I think you should just play the game to not ruin the story and twists for yourselves on the hope of the adaptation getting it right. It's present on mobile and from what I remember it was only about 30 hours. Will definitely be better than the anime no matter what. |

100% is rushed as expected of most game adaptations but i'm liking it i think they nailed the Nomura art style of the game outside of the monster the blend of CGI to make for more 360 action is a good use of it not sure if im sold on it but it's interesting to see. with the hype of the sequel i dont care if this ends up being shit i just need a recap of the story because i haven't played the game since it came out lol. The story was a little rushed, but cramming a 100+ hour game into 26 or so episodes, is understandable. Most of my anime-only friends didn't find it bad whatsoever. For this anime, that is not the case, 13 episodes, extremely rushed. Visuals are great though. I'm just really hoping that the next few episodes get a lot better because this first episode was not very good. Also the fact that Persona is a popular series in its own right, and it has very popular reviews all over. I've never heard of this game before. That could just be a me problem though. el3mel said: I think I'm just gonna have to play the game, most of the replies in this thread implied the same thing. It was ok I guess, nothing really stood out to me but hopefully that changes over the next couple episodes. |
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime. Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait. MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol. |

I never played the game. I wonder if watching this will be worth it. Don't wanna get disappointed like Persona 5 the animation again. At least the animation of TWEWY seems much more interesting than that abomination. |

I didn't hate it, but how rushed it was was very jarring. What happens midway through doesn't land nearly as much as we barely know shit about Neku. I can't really blame the production staff though, I mean this is only a short anime adaptation of a decently long game, however I really don't think the beginning hook is where they should cut corners. It kinda just feels like it's gonna be another anime adaptation of a video game that's going to be pretty middling akin to like the Persona anime adaptations. The fact that I'm a huge fan of the game means that I'm probably gonna enjoy this regardless, however I wouldn't recommend it to people that haven't played the game, especially those that plan to as a new TWEWY game has been announced and people might be interested in the first game more now. Hell, I might not even recommend it to people who are fans of the video game, things might be off to those that remember how this game was like, so seeing how the anime orders the events might throw a previous TWEWY fan off. A 3/5, probably a 2/5 if I wasn't already a fan of TWEWY. The music is a complete nostalgia trip. |

Yo wtf with the rating it's still deserve 7 specially how they accurately make the anime style similar to the game. Because that is almost impossible in this stupid CGI era. |

That was pretty cool! I haven't played the game but that seemed super fast paced, hopefully it slows down in the next episodes. Art style and soundtrack is pretty dope though, definitely early 2000's ish type of songs. CGI is pretty great as well, I think it blends pretty well with the unique art style. Neku has a lot of edge, but it's reasonable to not just easily trust anyone, he'll develop more as we go on and he'll also probably regain his memories. Shiki is cute. Hopefully pacing slows down in the next episodes, it will be way better once it does. |

Just finished the first episode, I really liked it and will continue to watch, but this anime has issues, some minor some huge: Design, graphics and CG: Amazing, they nailed the game's style, even the CG doesn't bother me, the noise its suposed to be something "abnormal" in the world so CG represents this very well, the rest is just great, all the characters look like they do in game and move like that, using the same poses. Sound/music: As soon as "Its so wonderful" theme started playing I was hooked, then they are using "Calling" for the OP so no complaints there, I hope they use more of the videogame songs in the anime, the song in the bat fight was a fine addition. Voices: I am used to the english voices in the game so it will take a while to get used to but some are fine and some are excellent. Neku sounds a bt too passive. Mechanics: Here the problems start, first the misdirections of the game like the other statue and the real bat that in the game was really small and easy to miss are gone, so instead of missions that require thinking we have fetch/slay quests. Also fusion attacks work as soon as the second day wich is fine but could have been used better. Power levels: So Neku can use all pins by osmosis?, no one told him anything and he just wipes the floor with enemies, at least in the game shiki explains that pins are used to fight, and then he discovers he can use many if not all pins. apart from that the boses look menacing and powerful enough. Progression: It seems ots going to be 3 episodes per "cycle" with extra time for latter ones, felt a bit rushed but I get it, if they paced the introduction, then the ending would be rushed and way worse. Characters: Neku seems way off, in the game he is rude, selfish and angry, here he is a blank slate of a character and is the main issue of the show, in the game he is still his character even with amnesia, here he is just a generic character, maybe they will fix it later but I doubt it. All the other characters feel spot on. Conclusion: Great adaptation that has some of its uniqueness lost by making it for a broader audience.Just finished the first episode, I really liked it and will continue to watch, but this anime has issues, some minor some huge: Design, graphics and CG: Amazing, they nailed the game's style, even the CG doesn't bother me, the noise its suposed to be something "abnormal" in the world so CG represents this very well, the rest is just great, all the characters look like they do in game and move like that, using the same poses. The anime onlys are judging this before they've even gotten through 3 episodes lol. TO ALL ANIME ONLYS: PLAY THE GAME INSTEAD OF WATCHING THIS ANIME. twewy is around 30 hours long so it is fairly quick. The tension and emotional attachment are nearly gone since it is rushed π. Neku is far too passive. Shiki is still great. I can feel the nostalgia though. This made me remember why I loved this game so much. I might have to start a second play through. |

Pretty okayish start. I guess. Liked the premise but didn't like the way they introduced it. The animation style is good as well. And that CG is uhmm... kinda weak. I'm gonna keep watching this show cuz there was so much hype behind this show. Just hoping this would turn out well. Otherwise, I'm gonna just go play the game instead. I like Shiki's character a lot. Neku seems like an asshole so far. |

Quite surprised that there's so many negative reviews, as I personally liked this episode. Was it perfect? Nope, I think it was pretty obvious that the pacing is extremely fast as they already covered 3 days in 1 episode. A lot of details are left out, so overall it seems like this anime is way more interesting for those who have already played the game, since you can fill in the gaps. As for Neku being less of an asshole, I also have a feeling it has to do something with translation. Like for example in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud is way nicer in the japanese version compared to the english version. Same thing with Lightning and 2B, it just seems like the english translators want to make everything overly edgy for some reason. Having said that, later on the story improves a lot and Neku should also get some character development in the anime. |

Hmmm I already like this one Almost of the survival plots that I'm looking for are here. And the animation, camera angles, the you-cannot-tell-if-it-is-a-CG-animation-or-not are all pretty well made and epic! Especially when Neku and Shiki are teaming up. That animation really killed me. Looking forward for more of this :) Why is the rating so low? The adaptation is pretty good so far... I have a question though.. Is it really like that? That everytime their mission ends, the days quickly passed by one? If so I'm a bit worried of the pacing. It seems really fast. The series has just started but they're already on 3rd day... |

Feels extremely rushed as someone who loves the game. The relationship between Shiki and Neku develops very slowly in the game, and Neku goes through a lot of character growth with his outlook on life changing. They haven't done a good job of capturing Neku's character this episode, they kind of just lore dumped. They are cramming things in waaaaay too fast and I'm afraid that's going to make the critical character moments less satisfying. |

Haven’t played the game, but as everyone else has been saying it’s clearly a rushed adaptation. Ah well. I’ll probably stick around to the end to see if it gets better. Okay episode though. Shiki’s pretty likable 6/10 |

Not liking this adaptation so far as a fan of the game. One of the most important scenes was completely skipped over and Neku's inner thoughts were either totally butchered or skipped. Pacing way too fast for a game that relied on slow development. Ofcourse the game mechanics didn't translate very well and just make the characters like Shiki feel like generic info dumps. Overall so far this feels like a bad surface level adaptation. I don't think the studio realised what made the game beloved in the first place. |

Finally getting to experience this highly-acclaimed game in animated form and it’s a fairly nice experience so far. Aesthetics and the sound department, especially the osts, are pretty good and set the mood for the show really well. Not sure where this is going but I’m definitely curious to see what’s next in store for us. |

Holy shit the retcon. They totally forgot to show Neku's pins too. Mr H didn't get any screen time, not even a flash back. The art style was really nicely done and the animation was smooth, but they tried to fit way too much into one episode. Didn't have any time to get adjusted to the world and just skipped a whole bunch of storyline. |

Oh boy. I've been looking forward to this anime adaptation of TWEWY; a game that I first played 4 or 5 years ago, but never beat (because I didn't know how to progress after a few hours into the game and I didn't want to use a walkthrough because I don't like cheating, so I just stopped playing it). But from what I played, I remember enjoying my time with it, though I don't consider myself an actual fan of the game in any way. I also played the first 5 minutes of the game just before watching this episode. It's nice to see everyone animated, as the game is just still frames. The characters looks just like how they do in the games. And I noticed that they used a couple of music tracks from the game, including "Calling", which was good to hear. It was cool seeing Neku burn the frogs with the Psych pin, just like in the beginning of the game. |
