I have no idea what the difference between these are. Anytime I try to look it up, everything just talks about Kitsune. I assume there must be something different between them, but what?

And why is it with a 'gi' rather than a 'ki'?

Not exactly sure but this is what I think. Bake in Japanese means disguise, artificial, fake and bake kitsunes are mischievous fox spirits who can transform and like playing tricks. I'm only on episode two so I'm not really sure but he's actually a tanuki, which are known to be mischievous so it kinda goes hand it hand with how he can summon his gun out of nowhere.

Don't think there's a real difference or importance to the gi and ki, just how Japanese works when some words are put together.

A bake-gitsune is just another type of kitsune. Japanese sometimes changes some of the sounds in a word to make it easier to say, for example 3 is san and 100 is hyaku but 300 is pronounced sam-byaku

Try saying bake-kitsune and bake-gitsune out loud and you should find the second one flows a bit more
