Satoko whole story is probably a red herring with maybe a tiny hint of the truth, I doubt R07 would seriously write a story where the whole message is "You shouldn't leave your hometown", frantically there isn't anything wrong with Rika's behaviors that deserve such inhuman punishment.

I don't think it's even Satoko gaslighting her or whatnot, Rika sounded really serious when talking to herself (or Bernkastel, didn't she vanish after "Dice-Killing"? Why still keep in contact with Rika after being cast off?) about having secretly wanted to leave Hinamizawa. I think this is an actual retcon of Rika's motivation to live past June 1983, and it's a terrible excuse to put her back through this torture.

And FWIW, I don't think Hanyuu would've minded Rika leaving the village anyway since she's always wanted her to live her life. Rika would only leave Hinamizawa if it meant having to be with her friends forever if they wished to leave, since to her, her friends are Hinamizawa.

God, this is actually infuriating.

Gou has had way too many things happening in opposite ways than what is established just because this is a different world and everything can happen. If people who by all rights shouldn't be suffering from the "curse" are affected, then characters can think and act in opposite ways of how they are.

We have Hanyuu telling Rika to kill herself with the sword. The Hanyuu we know and love would never do that. Cowardly Hanyuu from Minagoroshi may have told her to keep moving on until she found a happy world, but never to just off herself. She would never resent her for leaving the village either, rather, she would be a proud mama watching her kid grow up and fend for herself.

Satoko now is such an Oyashiro-sama and Hinamizawa fanatic that it would make Rena look tame. The "curse" can make you act out of character, but not actually change your beliefs. We know that Satoko resented Oyashiro-sama for cursing her in Tatarigoroshi and the villagers for ostracising her. Why would she suddenly do a 180 and start killing the unbelievers?

Satoko would never resent Rika for going away. In fact, she would have gone away with her, not only because of the reasons mentioned above, but also because she literally would have to, since there are no higher education schools in Hinamizawa. If that's all paranoia-induced talk, like Rena saying Satoshi was cursed because he wanted to leave the village, that's fine by me. But if it's, like some fans have speculated, the reason for Satoko to be looping Rika/helping the villain, then it's complete BS.

Rika hating Hinamizawa so much and wanting to leave ASAP also seems a bit off. To make it clear, I think it's absolutely valid for her to hate the village and she can leave whenever she wants. It's just that this was never represented at all in Higurashi. Sure, Rika could be tired of her life, jaded and cynical, rude when she got fed up. But she cared so much about the village (especially Satoko) that she decided to help with the research instead of robbing a bank and moving to Paris to drink wine. She talked about how much she hated boredom, repeating stuff and her deaths, but never about hating the village.

Also, the reasoning for her wanting to go to St. Lucia, which was going to a fancy school and living a sophisticated life, seems soooo out of character for her. It seems really superficial, for one. Rika has never been one to worry about those kinds of things.

However, now in Gou they tell us that "the moment she became free of her fate, she wanted to leave this hick town and enroll in a fancy school to live a sophisticated life". I get that she may have wanted to enroll when her friends moved out and she started thinking of high school, but saying it happened "the moment she defeated fate" is pretty much contradicting Matsuribayashi and Saikoroshi.

Unless Gou explains that this has been like the labyrith Homura created in Rebellion but with puppet friends instead of real ones, and they need to break free and back to her real friends, I'm going to disregard this as non canon.

I thought the gore in the last episode was bad, but this? And uncensored??... Then we get full body panning of the girls in swimsuits. The jump from blood to fanservice is deeply uncomfortable. I'm so tired of the fetishistic pedophile fanservice shtick Higurashi gets, with the new merch being much worse. I wonder how R07 feels about it considering how a big part of his writing is about protecting children. I'll forever wonder what Gou would have been like with a different studio, without Passione amping everything up.

Anyway Rika has stockholm syndrome now. I still hope we get to see her working with Takano this time.

Considering that R07's VN had stuff like this (26:09-26:26):

And things like Keiichi and Kameda's monologues (including one that compared eating cakes with eating girls), a nude sprite for Satoko after the bath scene in Tatarigoroshi and Irie's constant pedophilic remarks about Satoko and Rika, I don't think he would have that much trouble with this episode.

I love Ryukishi's work in general, but I always hated how he sometimes sexualized Satoko and Rika. I don't mind doing so with Mion, Shion and Rena that much because they're already developed enough to pass for adults, but Satoko and Rika is plain sick.

Actually, this is too much, even for Higurashi standards. I don’t think that putting so much disturbing violence in one episode was a really effective way to make the viewers sympathize with Rika.

I haven’t felt anything when Rika cried in the end of the episode because this moment lacks psychologism, which was very important part of the original Higurashi. The original anime isn’t just about gore, violence and suffering: it’s more about the characters and their personal tragedies. The new one looks very opposite: the autors try to shock their viewers with the demonstration of many disturbing scenes.

Unfortunately, it almost kills the strong emotional point of Rika’s fate. She looks like a victim in the very bad circumstances but she is the person, who’s definitely guilty for her own fate. This is the reason why I can’t emotionally connect with her story: I’m glad that she’s got out of the circle of suffering but I don’t care about her reflections about mistakes in the past, which should have been a very important moment of character’s development for Rika.

I can’t say I hate this episode, but it shows me that this series have had much more potential than just a mix of the straightforward horror and lighthearted slice of life, which is trying to look more complex than it already is.

P.S. The cliffhanger in the end looks promising. I’m very interested to see what Takano is going to tell Rika in the next episode.

do you expect people not to like the higu animes? not sure why besides OVAs. Especially when the Deen animes are heavily shilled by anitubers

Yup, after reading the VNs and the manga, DEEN anime gets unbearable to watch with all those inconsistencies. For example the flashback of K1 dying with a doll in his hand this episode is the correct one since DEEN version doesn't even have the doll in it lmao. Only thing deen did good was the gore part, other than that they butchered everything else

Just make this a new gameboard where every Witch is playing but only Rika forgot that she is a player-piece.

Hanyu - Featherine
Satoko - Lambda
Rika- Bernkastel
Takano and Tomitake -

Honestly I am afraid to get hyped with this cliffhanger. Last 3 episodes have killed any enthusiasm I had for Gou, so they might as well make this full fantasy with Umineko characters taking over.

A cliffhanger just when we finally get to the good stuff, thanks a lot.

The Satoko scene was a drag with a slightly better direction, quite thankfully. While the fanservice was just jarring. Now give us a good reason why Rika didn't confront either Takano or Tomitake in, like, the last 10 episodes or so? She remembers how Matsuribayashi goes, right? God, it's hard to like Gou...

Anyone who says Higurashi was always about gore is lying or straight up delusional

Higurashi was a drama/thriller with mostly the tragic lives and trauma of the cast taking the center stage, yeah there was some really gory scene here and there but it never got THIS bad and it definitely didn't have us sit through like 2 episodes straight of JUST torturing Rika for the heck of it.

It's funny because old anime watchers were bitching about how Gou wasn't scary/Gory enough and now that they turned up the gore to 11 they are STIL bitching about it.

There is also something seriously wrong with how Rika loops here. How come she jumped into the next fragment and she's ALREADY a goner?

A reminder that people worked for WEEKS on this fucking scene with Satoko literally butchering Rika for 10 min straight. It's beyond me how this got even a pass considering how absurd the gore is here.

Also, people should really stop whining about "pedo" shit like they never watched Higurashi at all.
R07 literally drew art of Satoko COMPLETELY naked in the original sound novel and the VN had to actually censor that
Keiichi lusting over Satoko and Rika is also a mainstream gag in the side media of Higurashi

Watching 10 years old kid butchering her friend like they butcher an animal is okay for you but them wearing swimsuits is crossing the line?

And that was bad as well back then.
You can't really force people to like that aspect about Higurashi, just because you don't have a problem with it.

The difference between the gore scenes and the fanservice is the way the scenes are framed by the way (I never understood why some people don't understand that difference).
Satoko butchering Rika is obviously framed as something horrible, wrong and extremely painful to Rika. It's supposed to disturb the viewer and if you take a look at this weeks discussion, it pretty much succeeded at doing so.
Rika and Satoko in bathing suits with lighting/shading that especially highlights their bodies or the weird angles during the tag scene are not framed as that. It's sexualizing them in the positive carefree moments, it's supposed to be fun, desirable (in contrast to the suffering, not necessarily in a sexual way), it’s not framed as smth disturbing (which it is... sexualizing of 11 year olds shouldn't be thing) and only there cause they apparently thought some viewers want to see that. It serves no purpose to the story/narrative.
You can do the fun and SoL moments without the fanservice, but it's hard to make a disturbing murder scene without gore (not impossible tho & the scene in this episode was definitely way too graphic/brutal).

Are you talking about the swimsuits? if u are then i don't think there was any strong fanservice other than "girls in swimsuits". Other than that there where some slight yuri undertones before the reveal of rika's guts.. after that i don't recall anything that you can classify as service.

From what I've read here I've come to a conclusion that I might be mental because I rly enjoyed the gore sequence and I even ate spaghetti while watching it, no problem. It had amazing heavy atmosphere just like some of the legendary scenes from OG higurashi which is great. The whole episode had me on pins and needles, questioning everything that happened before or is about to happen so yeah I hope Ryukishi doesn't blow this and makes sense out of this bloody mess. It's definitely interesting to watch things unravel..

Exactly, but what about a newcomers?

Moral: if your life is suffering and everybody in the world trying to do it even worst - don't you dare trying to escape or ask about help - your friends, family and whole socium will judge you, AND if you try'd to kill yourself and end this suffering - then GOD judges you with MORE suffering...good moral.
