Probably because it is very cliche and there really isn’t much of a narrative.

But to each their own, personally I really enjoyed this title haha.

I don't dislike this anime. I thought it was pretty good.

But I can understand why not everyone like it. Slapstick humour doesn't work on a lot of people, the anime is quite rushed toward the end and the emotionnal themes are specific to the person. Not everyone is going to relate to the tragedies in this anime.

The anime is fine for the most part but the emotional climax was completely ruined. There are a couple episodes that are really bad and I don't say this lightly.

I ended up rating 5/10, higher than Charlotte, because the characters were actually endearing and story is well thought out, but the overall package really left a lot to be desired.

They don't like the writing and true, it's not the best.

But I still enjoyed the show. It's just...not what I expected it to be.

Imagine having the first half of the show being only focused on the cast doing random stuff just to remember there is a plot and only less that 6 episodes to aboard it. Of course everything would feel rushed and forced in the end.
This anime has a lot of flaws but this one particularly was my main problem with it.

Same here. The fist half is just trash. The second half is better but has less emotional impact due the lack of good development.

It gets unnecessarily overdramatic by episode 9, which completely ruined the comedic mood we were having by then.

Terrible plotline with characters who are thinner than a sheet of paper and behave in absurd and nonsensical ways. Tack on poor pacing with badly balanced comedy and melodrama and you've got a pretty big trainwreck there.

Something highly acclaimed doesn't necessarily have to be good.
And something that is hated by a group of people does not necessarily have to be bad.

Personally, I like me and I think these people exaggerate too much, not to say that they did not understand anything.

I think it's because it got overwhelmed by the hype that's built around it. Jun Maeda himself did says that this would be the "Most sad and heartbreaking" story he write. Like that's a very big hype considering Jun Maeda's previous works.

I would have to agree that this show definitely lacked direction. Binge watching it felt like each episode was all over the place. But personally, I was looking for an anime like that and I rather enjoyed it. I felt it peaked in the middle.

It’s a show with an interesting premise, a couple of good episodes, but was otherwise marred be extraordinarily bad execution on just about every other front. Characters being flat, plot lines getting rushed, a left-field romance of massively questionable circumstances and a stupidly tone-deaf portrayal of caring for someone with special needs.

just like angel beats, they put a first half of the characters goofing off,and the second half make everything more melancholic forcibly making everything wrong, plus most of the characters that I thought were good were wasted (although with the little time that the anime has, they had to focus on the protagonists except for one chapter)
Oh, and I forgot to say that the first half was good and entertaining, while the second drastically changed the plot in a poorly executed way

Honestly some people on here I doubt even like anime. Like I checked some guy that reviewed another anime bad, his mean score on all anime he has watched was like 2-3. Yet he had seen tons of shows. Why even watch anime if you clearly hate it?

People just like to hate because their lives are shallow and have nothing better to do.

You are better of just watching a show to see if YOU like it instead of trusting scores/reviews.

Jun Maeda as the writer said "I strived to make The Day I Became a God the most heart-breaking anime of all time".
People was missunderstood that sentence as "I promised", but the original is "I strived", then a lot of media shared the big tagline "most heart-breaking anime of all time" so people made high expectation to their self until the end of anime.
The story will be better if it contains 13-14 episodes, but the director cut some points. The story break all the expectation so people became mad and spam the bad words and scores.

Conclusion, people made high expectation to something never promised by author and blamed story as bad story, but actually the story was cut by director.

You're right I should watch the anime to see if I like it but there are a lot of animes to pick from so why would I watch something that people didn't like when there are so many animes that people loved and that I will probably enjoy.

This anime actually has very good potential and maybe it is true to say that it is the saddest anime he has ever made, but this anime feels rushed for the last 6 episodes. If only this anime has 24 episodes or at least 12 episodes but has a follow-up series, namely season 2, it might become one of the best anime by Jun Maeda.
For the problem of the number of episodes, we can take 2 examples from other anime, namely "Violet Evergarden" and "Clannad", Clannad is maximally adapted where the anime has 2 sequels, namely "Clannad" and "Clannad: After Story" so that the anime watchers is right really feel the sadness of the anime.
While "Violet Evergarden" only has 12 episodes, but the anime in each episode prioritizes sadness. In "Violet Evergarden" we are told that Violet is looking for the truth about whether Gilbert disappeared where and whether he is still alive or not, but this is not resolved in the anime and it will be answered in the latest sequel (Movie).

Just because she didn't die on screen doesn't mean it won't happen soon. They just ended the anime before it could happen.

When it was airing it was doing quite well. It was on the top ten charts and had a good rating too. I think after the last 2-3 episodes the rating went down. It went from a fun slice of life to some sad shit. Maybe a lot of people didnt like that. Imo the anime was pretty good but the ending could've been better.

I did a spoiler-free review that has about 30 votes in case you're interested.

I'm going to do a long post, so be warned: There are spoilers here.

This Anime has a good plot. It started well, although some of the chapters were left over and may have been released as OVAs. The first 8 chapters don't sit well with most people because most of the scenes are very subjective comedy. Personally I like that exaggerated comedy and, sometimes, absurd, it resembles a little Grand Blue.

Although when the anime was most criticized is in the last 4 chapters, where it supposedly gets worse because of the hasty and "mediocre" relationship between Hina and Yota. Although this I do not consider precisely an error of the author, but rather that people lose interest or do not deepen their story and end up without finding the answer they are looking for so much "why does Yota and Hina's relationship not feel real?" .

I didn't enjoy chapter 9 as much since I identified with that question, but in the last 2 chapters it is easier to understand the strong bond between Yota and Hina. Hina no longer has powers, therefore she is not the same. Although Hina helped Yota a lot to dare to do things that she did not want before. Hina changed Yota's life at that time before her virtue disappeared, justifying why Yota is so close to her.

It is also often criticized for being simpler than its previous stories, and I don't deny it, but mediocrity and simplicity are not the same. People tend to use the word "generic" referring to cliché, and they are also often arrogant in asking for characters who are more developed and unusual than themselves. In this anime they want to propose realistic characters that resemble people you have met, if the author created an unusual character, he would lose that privilege of an identifiable and endearing person.

It should be said that this is like a Slice of Life that uses fantasy to make its plot work, so you can't expect something complex either. And its ending is predictable if you've seen Maeda's previous works, but it doesn't ruin anything nor is it a bad ending in my opinion. It is not to detract from another work, but imagine that the end of this anime had the end of a chapter of Majo no Tabitabi, at least it would leave me disappointed in that case.

In all honestly, I feel that's what I really wanted to do. For me, as a reader, when I think, "this manga will remain in my heart," it means, for example, it phenomenally hurt me: It's those kinds of experiences I'm after." - Pajime Hisayama (My favourite hurting author).

Because of the false advertising. The anime was marketed is an end of the world anime, and the first scene of the first episode definitely implied either that or the death of the main female character. But a little over halfway through we realized it wasn't what it was marketed as and that first scene was complete BS instead of foreshadowing. People don't like being lied to and while a lot of people disliked the poor character introductions/development and the poor attempt at comedy in what was marketed as "the saddest anime ever", we put up with it thinking it's just Jun delaying the enviable emotional downhill turn. All that waiting and tolerating off that trash of a 4koma-like series of episodes was not paid off with the ending we were all expecting and promised. THAT is why its so hated and I'd argue that it's current score as of 1/15/2020 is too high for what we were put through for nothing. I haven't seen such blatantly false advertising since WorldEnd and not an ending so disappointing since Little Busters: Refrain.

The MC when he was at Hina's health facility(forgot what it actually was) panicked a bit too much. Each time he'd yelled at Hina makes me want to shut the f out of him. Hell if I was Shiba, I would've told him to get the f out. It was so dumb and seemed too desperate which was unnecessary imo. Does it want me to feel emotional or what. I actually enjoyed the comedy parts but got disappointed at the end. Tbf, I don't ship mc with Hina, it would've been fine if they stayed as relatives and I prefer Izanami more than Hina. So that's why I dislike this anime. Very irritating to watch.

well I think he yelled at her like that because he still thought she was the Hina he met and treated her like he always did.
And about staying together, I like to think that they love each other in a fraternal way, and that in the future he will be together with izanami (is what I think because when his friend and izanami called him at the end of the series, they told them they loved him, and obviously not in a romantic way)

As someone who's been closely following Jun Maeda, this work of his was way too underwhelming.

The other anime, that was kinda disappointing was Rewrite. I don't know about the game but the anime was disappointing to me.

Charlotte was at least better for me but not the best like Clannad, Little Busters, or Angel Beats.

It's not that I hate Kamisama ni Natta Hi from the bottom of heart. It's basically just disappointing that he wasn't the same as before. It all started with Charlotte but that one was still decent...now there's an upcoming work again called Summer Pockets and I'll be lowering my expectations at this point.

For people who enjoyed it, good for you. I sometimes watch animes that some people may hate so I really don't care what others may think and it doesn't matter if the anime I'm watching is internationally the best or not. For me, I have my own favourites and that's fine.

WARNING: I'm gonna spoil a scene here. First comment so unsure how to hide a spoiler. Also tell me if I did too much, and it's best not to talk about the show to in depth outside of the discussion threads for episodes.

TL;DR
A specific scene several episodes into the show is what killed the vibe for me, way to illogical. Outside of that it's bang-average and people would expect better from the guy who created Angel Beats and worked on other relatively highly rated shows.
