THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- What an amazing chapter. Loved the parallels between Chihaya/Suou. After all this time, she got her first win against Shinobu... With the help of 'Taichi'. The moment where all Misuzawa was cheering (and Taichi dropping his phone on the floor) had me in tears. Inokuma's cheer during the match, too. Arata scenes almost made me cry as well. Suetsugu was right, this chapter is an absolute masterpiece. |

What a beautiful and emotional chapter-the tweets of Suetsugu make sense now. I love the focus Misuzawa has been getting, and how Chihaya has a card for everyone-I would even call it a form of love from her side. My favorite scene is how Chihaya realized all these things were given to her by others-everything is so delicately connected. Arata is struggling-as predicated-and I love it! I cannot wait for him to find his own flame, and use it. My shipper side can't wait for this all to come in full circle, and the card associated with Arata to be revealed-since it was his passion/their meeting that changed her world, and set the story in motion. |

I don't see that happening at all. If you based that off this chapter I saw and felt the exact opposite. Magnificent chapter nonetheless. |

Good conversation between Taichi and Chitose She filled the void after Chihaya stopped worshiping her with acting but Chihaya is still giving Christmas gifts to Taichi of Chitose 's photo albums I like that Chihaya is not a genius but is pushed forward by the gifts from everyone around her She sees Tare for Taichi because he was separated from her for 3 years and still reached out to save her from her loneliness |

I love this chapter. I love that Arata is struggling and is now questioning himself about his own karuta and how he will turn the tide in the coming chapters. I love the panels that mentioned Chihaya's poems for her friends and then complimenting her focus on the game and finally the cheers that erupted after winning her first match with Shinobu. I got goosebumps there. I love Chitose and Taichi here, the void that was left and how one has to do something to fill that void. Chitose might be bitter when Chihaya found another passion but admitting there was a hole meant she cherished Chihaya, too, though in a twisted way. I love Taichi's over-protective nature and damn, they look so good together I almost, almost shipped them. Now that Suou is back on the groove, I can't wait for the next chapter. I want to listen to Shinobu's inner thoughts. That's one hella cut on her pride since Chihaya was only second to Arata to ever beat her in Karuta, as far as I remember. I just want Arata and Chihaya to knock them down their high horses is all. |

This chapter was an absolute masterpiece! This will be turning points for a lot of characters. Arata has come to understand that he lacked the original style to play Karuta, the one that represents himself and boosts him to his best. I hope he finds it in this Meijin match. Taichi came to realization that it's not always about his feeling that matters. Chihaya's feelings for him were strong, be it friendship or love, she holds Taichi in a special place. Chihaya-Taichi relationship might take a different route from this point on and Taichi will find something other than Chihaya that he can pursue. Shinobu is hella strong! (She's my queen). But even the strong that stands alone can be defeated by those who do not fight alone. Of course she was pissed, but her horizon will be widened. I remember Watarai-san saying that Karuta's cards were used to be her friends but now they're like her children. Karuta itself is ageless, but human is not. Soon, you will be lonely if they're the only thing you hold dear. |

Great chapter, this actually captures the essence of chihayafuru and especially chihaya as the main character. No wonder Suetsugu sensei said this was an important chapter to her which delivers her feelings and emotions on the story & characters. Firstly coming to Taichi the conversation with chitose was quite fun, insightful and interesting.Fun because how she roasts taichi for sucking at investing time and then actually doing a good impression of chihaya. She is actually quite a talented actress xD For the serious and interesting part was the way they talk and describe about their connections with chihaya, especially how Chitose describes about filling the void in their hearts & how to move on with life with something else is the way to do it, especially for taichi since chihaya cant fill it. So i wonder whats in store for taichi right now. Also Taichi needs to stop the thinking that he doesn't belong to the same place as Arata and Chihaya & get back on the train go to the venue to be there for both of them. Especially since he thinks Arata will be fine and he is not actually fine right now tbh. As an Arata fan i am happy and worried for him. My boy is struggling for real right now, revealing his inner struggles, vulnerable and weak side. He asked chihaya to play her own karuta and yet he himself is fighting & finding his own way. I personally really wanted to see this & kinda glad its happening and i am sure his development from here will just keep going on. Suo who has again begun to prove why he is the meijin and i love him for that. This is what we needed to see for a meijin match. Chihaya, is on a different and completely on an another level right now that even suo acknowledges her.Shinobu able to not hear anything from the card was shocking tbh. But my favorite part would be how she describes that she has a card for everyone which has been there for her. (I would actually like to see the others cards as well especially Arata's).Every single one was given to her by someone else referencing what she is right now is a collective being of everyone else around her & her strong connections with them.Kana, desktomu and finally taichi's tare card which won her the match. "Friends who know you by heart but even if they are no longer around they will always be there and irreplaceable". Such a deep and strong sentiment. That was such a amazing heartwarming moment, all of her friends family tearing up,hyped and shouting, taichi literally dropped his phone yelling on top of his lungs. xD Chihaya has won the round and hope she keeps going strong. My boy Arata needs to pick himself up and find his own karuta, hopefully with inspiration from Chihaya and some support from Taichi, he needs it right now. It will be a beautiful display of bonds between them. Rooting for both Chihaya and Arata to win and get their dreams <3 |

What a wonderful chapter!!!! Arata is having a hard time playing the Meijin, yes Suou didn't earn that title for nothing. What hurt was to see the difference in their placements, Arata putting most of the cards on the bottom and the side while Suou's cards are all grouped in the middle. I wonder if Suou can still "see" the outer cards. Anyway his exceptional hearing and the special reader are making it a great combo to win big from Arata in this match. Arata is asking himself now, what is his own karuta..........well, better late than never.....It was sort of nice of Suou san to ask Arata if he was alright when he fell. He knows that Arata is pretty young and maybe his heart has softened a bit while playing with Taichi. He knows they are friends. Then Chitose and Taichi talk. She's openly telling him not to tell other people what he should be doing himself: in other words go get your butt back to Omi Jingu. She also is telling him something important about finding your own fire! Taichi knows what she's talking about cause he almost felt it burning inside him when he played that final against Fujisaki. Usually Chihaya was the one pulling the passion but then he felt it on his own. That's what he needs to find to fill the void. You can't count on loving someone to fill up that space. If you want to love, you need to find yourself first. He has to go back! As president of the Mizusawa club, the club he and Chihaya created together, her best support and teammate (and maybe also her teammate in life in the future, who knows). Chihaya wants him to come and it's not complete without him. As she wins while taking the card she assigned to Taichi, "Tare" it's evident that Chihaya's brain works with "sound". And when Taichi popped up in front of her, she was listening to a poem about loneliness, a poem about pines, Takasago pines(who have their own wonderful story). Taichi came and saved her from loneliness. I think Taichi also understood how much Chihaya worked to get there: she's not a genius! but she worked so hard. In contrast to Suou and Arata thinking "she's a genius"; they have no idea. Back to Chihaya who is playing so bad ass and feeling strong with the help of her friends, as she takes Hoto (falling at Arata's feet, the poem waiting for a cry, linked to summer and maybe some great memories) and Fu, one of her favourite poems, on to Tare remembering all the support she got from her team, friends, familiy and teachers, that she isn't there only because of her own effort. Such a beautiful realisation!! You have grown so much Chihaya!!! To close it all, Taichi crying his heart out, next to the "rails", dropping his phone and probably deciding not to leave this time round and go back to where he will find a place to belong. ps: a little pat for Shinobu who has to witness all this support around Chihaya. I hope it won't crush her in the end. |

What an exquisite chapter. Suetsugu just keeps getting better, and better. -Arata is struggling, and I'm loving it. I know this will lead to Arata finding his own flame/own karuta. Whether that flame/karuta is enough to become the Meijin is something only time will tell. I want him to win, but more than anything, I just want the Karuta Association to see, and realize Arata is his own person instead of a relic of his grandfather. No human being can replace another. I think this is something Arata also needs to realize as well-is he trying to become his grandfather to keep him alive? Is this a way of atoning for his death? One Arata once believed he was at fault for. He'll keep his grandfathers karuta alive, but in return he won't ever find his own. A karuta player without their own karuta, depressing to say the least. -The cards are silent for Shinobu. This loss will do her good. Suetsugu highlighting the difference between our girls yet again- Shinobu/solitude, Chihaya/support. -Suo calls Chihaya a genius, but in a previous page he declares that the reader makes him a genius. He acknowledges and admits it's not his own flame, but someone else's-the reader. Can Chihaya be considered a "genius" or something akin to a genius because of those around her? For Suo, it's the reader that pushes him to new heights. For Chihaya, it's her support system/her loved ones/those strong connections that push her to new heights. We see it later in the chapter with Taichi's card "Tare" helping Chihaya land her first win-which as probably the most important of the bunch since Taichi's support is finally be acknowledged. Something his character always needed, especially when it came to Chihaya. -Good on Chitose for calling Taichi out! He shouldn't be pushing onto others what he should-and wants-to do himself. Hopefully he'll start heading back next chapter. I wonder if Arata is going to lose to Suo now. Will Taichi be the one to end his reign after all? or will Taichi be the one to give Arata support? Another user mentioned how Suetsugu is probably aiming for Taichi to give Arata verbal support, like how Arata gave Chihaya verbal support. The trio helping each other. Will Arata/Chihaya give Taichi the verbal support he needs to continue his karuta journey? Does he need to hear that he still has a place in their world? -Chitose was left with a void when Chihaya stopped worshipping her-something that had to happen sooner or later. Instead of continuing to yearn the fact that Chihaya won't fill the void, she filled that void herself! The void in Taichi, is it because Chihaya didn't return his feelings or it is related to karuta? I wonder. By the way, did anyone else peep how Taichi wasn't forlorn when he told Chitose he was rejected? -"Every single one of them was given to me by someone else" just beautiful, and rings true for the entire manga. The love, and support Chihaya received helped her get this far. This was never a journey of solitude for our heroine. The line could also be used for the cards themselves "every single one of them" = "every single card" was given to her by someone else. Kana gave "Tago" meaning, Taichi gave "Tare" and "Taichi" meaning. Take it back to the beginning now, how her card "Chiha" was given to her by Arata. My shipper heart cannot wait for future chapters, and for the card associated with Arata to-hopefully-be revealed. I'm guessing author-san will push both matches for 5 games, ending the meijin match before the queen one and both arata and chihaya gonna be crowned. I hope that, ngl. about the romance, I like it, but couldn't care less. Let them be friends and date other people in college. Can we have Chihaya dating Shinobu? hahahahaha |

Especially i want him to get out his grandfathers shadows and make others recognize him as Arata not Wataya sensei's Grandson. Also i did see taichis expression, he was quite normal with it, i guess he is slowly starting to accept & move on with life? whatever it is i hope finds peace somehow. He has suffered enough. I think Suo is calling chihaya a genius on the fact that she is able to utilize everything given to her to the utmost level. Be it the reader, the superhuman hearing and the support given to her by others and make herself a phenomenal player. Of course she wasnt born with it but she honed and worked hard herself to the bone to reach that level. So yea Suo and Arata did notice her caliber at that point and they werent wrong. Chihaya is a genius in her own way along with the hardwork she put in. .The fact that she entered shinobus world proves that. Its not something a normal hardworking person can do. Also speaking of cards, Chiha is her card & was given to her by Arata but at times she also referenced the same card to him as well. Especially when she was injured in the hospital after talking to him on the phone. The chiha card was shown when she says as long as she loves karuta, she will keep loving arata as well. So it might be the card they both associate with each other? or Chihaya actually has another card kept for him. We'll see i guess. |

He's kept the spirit/karuta of his late grandfather alive, but a person can't inherit personal experience. Arata embodies his late grandfather to such a great length that he doesn't have his own karuta, and he's playing since he was a toddler! It's time for our boy to find his karuta, and to step out from his grandfather's shadow. Whether his own karuta will be able enough to take the Meijin title this time around is something up in the air. he was quite normal with it, i guess he is slowly starting to accept & move on with life? whatever it is i hope finds peace somehow. He has suffered enough. He is! I'm glad that the rejection is something he seems to be able to talk about. I hope Taichi fills his void by continuing his karuta journey for his own sake this time around. He's much better all around when he isn't centering all his focus on Chihaya, and prioritizing her dream over everything. Taichi should continue to put himself first. Now that I'm putting more thought into it, I don't know if I want Arata/Chihaya to tell Taichi he still belongs in their world-I would find it more fitting if he realized this himself, and declared that he will make a spot for himself. I'm not knocking her hard work, but I do believe Chihaya has innate talent. If constant hard work was the only thing needed then what about a character like Hyoro? He's put in the hard work for years, but can't pass a certain level. Also speaking of cards, Chiha is her card & was given to her by Arata but at times she also referenced the same card to him as well. Especially when she was injured in the hospital after talking to him on the phone. The chiha card was shown when she says as long as she loves karuta, she will keep loving arata as well. Yes, she has tied "Chiha" to Arata twice IIRC. She associates Arata with the card in chapter 90. It's also the card that pops up when she states she will always love him, and karuta two chapters later. Chihaya actually has another card kept for him. We'll see i guess. Actually going by the databook that came out last year, both boys have three main cards associated with their characters. Taichi is associated with 16, 34, and 48. Arata is associated with 11, 43, and 57. I don't believe the databook is the final word, but Chihaya just associated "Tare" which is card 34 with Taichi in this chapter so it's possible for card 11, 43, or 57 to be associated with Arata in an upcoming match. |

I really feel bad for him at times but his spirit never breaks thats the best part, also love how he has sucha good supporting girl besides him aka nishidas sister. Yea i read that as well in the data books about 11,43 and 57, but we can never know until it reveals finally. But still excited to see the emotions and feelings she will connect with card to him. it will be worth the wait :) |

This is so late, and I'm lazy right now but we called in Arata struggling to fight his real Karuta (and would probably cost him two matches!). And the subtle set up with Taichi supporting him which was what I wanted is already here! Yay! Chihaya's scene with the cards is lovely and foils Shibobu so well. This is what I was talking about too. |

this was such a beautiful chapter and it really captured all of the growth and change chihaya's experienced throughout the series. it was so heartwarming to see that she's delivering all of her feelings and emotions by expressing her fondness to the people around her + the ways they helped her get to this point. remembering her endless dedication, connecting her feelings to the meanings of the poems, and finally finding her own dream to spread her passion of karuta to others while reaching the top. i started to tear up the moment she won the "tare" card. the poem she associates with taichi and their memories + the raw emotion taichi had dropping his phone screaming for chihaya's win ;; the interaction between him and chitose where they talked about the void left in their hearts and how taichi still has something left to fill that emptiness.. please be happy taichi! i want you to be happy so much! |

So far everything is proceeding as some of us used to speculate (tho admittedly, a lot of this was kinda of super obvious): 1. Chihaya will show the power of Karuta, her karuta, which was built through the bonds with people unlike Shinobu which was built with her lonesome connection with cards. Shinobu losing will allow her to mature as karuta player and as person. I'm sure the chiha-card and the memories of Arata will become important for last match (because is where the story began: Chihaya's flashback to her meeting with Arata under the rain). 2. Arata will face difficulties to find out his own karuta and not his grandfather's. I think he found it in his battle with Taichi but he didn't realize it (or maybe when he played with Chihaya as a kid, but he matured it with Taichi). So seeing Taichi again would bring it out. He needs to lose at least two matches to drump up the excitment. 3. Taichi needed to admit to himself he loved karuta and has a place on it, and isn't just his feelings for Chihaya. He already knew Arata made him like it, but probably was still hurt to fully say he actually loves all of it. He needed to realize he has a place with his friends, who need and miss him. I really want him to be the one who says "let's start our own club in college" to Arata and Chihaya. |

^ I think Arata's search for his own karuta will have to do with team dynamics. That's what Arata always desired the most. Friends to play with. He doesn't really feel the passion burning in him, but Taichi made it come up. That famous magma inside. About the Chiha card: it has to do with both boys. Both boys have given Chihaya a different side of the Chiha card which will probably be understood by Chihaya at the end of the story. Arata started the path of passion in karuta for Chihaya. Taichi started a whole different one. It will all fall in place. I feel that Taichi has already understood he loves karuta but he was leaving it all to Arata. "It's fine, Arata is there." But it's not fine at all. Why make Arata be the one to defeat Suou and support Chihaya? He wants to do it! That's why he'll turn around and try a get what he really wants to do regardless of anyone's feelings and everything that happened. He'll go back for himself. |

Thess said: I'm sure the chiha-card and the memories of Arata will become important for last match (because is where the story began: Chihaya's flashback to her meeting with Arata under the rain). I don't want to jump the gun, but I really do feel the Chiha card will be connected to Arata in an upcoming chapter. He's the only person she's associated the card with (twice!) so far, and it's the card that he "gave" to her during childhood. It's not only a special card to their overall bond, but it's a special poem. Minor spoiler for chapter 230: the new chapter seems to have them bonding over the Chiha card, how they both have misfortunate with it. 2. So seeing Taichi again would bring it out. I agree. I do believe that seeing Taichi-having the three of them together again in the same place ("as long as we keep playing, we'll see each other/for a future where the three of us can be together")-will give Arata a boost. The three of them made up his very first team. Full circle to the very beginning. I'm pretty you were the user that said since Arata gave Chihaya the encouragement she needed, Taichi will be the one to give Arata the encouragement he needs. I think Taichi knows, and acknowledges that he loves it. I think his (current) problem is that he feels he has no place in their world anymore-as in competitive karuta. The conversation he has with Tsubaguchi in 219 highlights this well. Taichi feels Chihaya/Arata are both in a different world than he is. I believe the accumulation of his journey is that he'll continue his karuta journey, but for his own sake this time around. Whatever happens, I do believe we'll see the trio playing as a team once more before the manga is done with. sweetangie said: Exactly, showing in how "Take" card brought significant in Chihaya's close bond of friendship towards Taichi, Sensei will also bring a moment so special in how close Chihaya sees Arata in her life as well for the next few chapters to come, and that's something we're dying to see ( WE'RE SO READY!!!) XD Yes, so very much! I don't really want to jump the gun, but the possibility of Arata's own card being revealed-as in the one she associates with him-is pretty high. On one hand, it's her namesake card so there is a possibility that Arata isn't connected to the card at all since the 5th match could be all about Chihaya and herself, but on the other hand, it is a special card to them both. It's the card that first connected them. It's the card Arata "gave" to her. It's their meeting, that match in that rundown apartment, his passion, that changed her world forever. And it's a card she's already associated with him twice before. Despite not wanting to celebrate too early, it seems pretty obvious that Arata will also have his own moment from Chihaya where we see how special he/their bond is to her (the way the club, Taichi, and Chitose got such acknowledgement already) and it's more than likely that Chiha is his/their card. |

What is most interesting is how Chihaya sees her Chiha card and why she doesn't see nor is able to take it anymore and since when. I think the Chiha card represents herself and both boys definitely have a link to that card in different ways or Sensei wouldn't have "stressed" the significance and how the card pops up. It's simple : Chihaya always wants to take her card but she plays Shiranami: she sends her most precious cards. Taichi does like wise: he sends his most precious card. Both Chihaya and Taichi have always wanted to take Chiha. Arata it's s different: first of all throughout the whole manga he has never taken Chiha, not once. And when he has it, he wants to keep it on his side or not pay special attention to any of the cards like his grandfather taught him. He definitely has to find an emotional passion within karuta. As Arata put Chihaya on the path of passion with Chiha, I hope he will rekindle his true passion by finally taking Chiha. His fond memories of those childhood days for the time his passion was still intact, his grandfather alive. But things will be alright with the help of his friends and "teammate" who is coming, he will be able to forgive himself, be himself and find his own path of passion. As for Taichi, it's more than clear that playing with Suou who told him to let go: he just can't. When the Chiha card pops up "don't disappear" or he attacked to take it. Cause for him it's only Chiha. I'm glad Chihaya witnessed him taking her favourite cards, Chiha and Fu. I really think the Chiha card has several meanings for Chihaya: what she learned about Chihayaburu, Arata saying it was her card and putting her on the path of karuta/passion. But the Chiha card is a poem written by someone with a passionate hidden love, and since Chihaya has also in the meantime studied and learned what the poems are about, she surely has understood by now what this poem full of passion really is about. Then there also is her emotional connection to the poem: the first time she actually took the poem in a match and said she had fun. Chihaya obviously has a "sound" connection with the cards. All those crazy good moments the whole team takes the card, all her good memories must be connected with the Chiha song. Last but least I hope she will take Natihara's hand when he enters the palace....cause this time he has decided to not look from afar and step inside. (Ps this is my own passionate pov on the story. Sensei succeeded in passing on the passion for the Hyankunin Isshu). |

Arata has always been the only one really connected to Chiha. The seeds have been planted, the build-up is there. Let's see what Suetsugu plans to do. -When Chihaya manages to take Chiha in the final 5th round, the story cuts to the very first Arata x Chihaya meeting. -The "Before I knew what passion was" line that appears in the very beginning of Chapter 1. -When Arata "gives" Chihaya her namesake card. -"What I learned that day wasn't karuta. It was passion. Arata's passion". Chapter 6. -"Chihayafuru is a song of a bright red love". -The entire bright red dialogue from chapter 20. -Chapter 90 with Chihayaburu, and Arata. -The iconic "I will always love Arata, and karuta" line from chapter 92. And of course, Chiha popping up during the only Chihaya confession we have so far. |

All above mentioned points happened before the confessions and before Chihaya even noticed that the Chiha card disappeared. It's interesting to find out why it disappeared in the first place and why she can't take it anymore, and what is missing. I don't think it has really anything to do with Arata. He's there, but Chiha isn't. We started paying more attention of Chiha's appearances because Chihaya misses it and asking ourselves what it could mean. |

@possession1981 @kipo0007 We truly believe Sensei has restore a special moment where Chihaya associate a card that connections her affection towards Arata as well, we need to be patient and wait. More strong pointers if I may add even after Arata's love confession it carries a very deep meaning: Where Chihaya settles her goals with Arata in ch 173 about her being the strongest in karuta ( which it relates to the girl talk she had at the Fujisaki training camp ch 92 where she states "until she gets stronger in karuta she has no rights sit across any person she might like" in ch 166 Chihaya asked Arata for another match, which connects that statement for their re-match which sensei did postpose after the queen/.Meijin tournament where Chihaya will unleash her full potential in karuta) and in ch 217 that one missing page where Chihaya says:" Arata let's go together at teh Fuji mount peak"Those are something very important for someone to have a vision towards their special someone being part of their lives in the future: they're in the same page when it comes to what direction their lives are going and most importantly, they know no matter where life takes them, they're both in it together. Plus, in ch 120 where Chihaya sees that white pigeon (or dove) where she says the it's glowing because she's having babies? Seeing how Chihaya life is no longer the same, something new has started for her " wanting to build a family" with someone, and then later after Taichi confessed where Chihaya thought about Arata where she fully understood when Arata said" let's play karuta together then" he interrupted it as a marriage proposal "let's spend our lives together" it's not a coincidence in how sensei connects these two moments as one meaning, the reason it's there is because it's part of Chihaya's development. Something is telling me there's still more to come after this, this is far from over. |

It just hit me that Chitose was trying to explain to Taichi that Taichi wasn't rejected because of himself nor Arata but because Chihaya only has karuta on her mind..... Chihaya got terribly scared when he confessed realising what both boys wanted while not being on that page.....at all. She actually rejected Arata as well, because she has no idea about those feelings but let him off more "softly". Lol, both were rejected because of karuta. Chihaya has no romantic agenda, or is really in the baby steps of feeling anything more for a boy..... |

Genuinely don't understand how anyone could think Arata got rejected when she even tells him it's not an exact answer to his confession, but how she feels at the moment. The proper answer-whether it's positive or negative-is yet to come. |

She said that because she has no idea how she feels thus cannot say anything. She isn't on that page at all which she made crystal clear in that moment, and looks like Chitose confirmed it just that telling Taichi that Chihaya has no hidden agenda, that she only had karuta in mind from the get go. That Taichi and Arata both have something else in mind is their problem. Arata was the one who said he would wait etc but Chihaya didn't say anything about telling him in the future....he just put that there himself. She is straightforward, couldn't say anything about her feelings because she simply is confused/wants to concentrate on something else. It's only when reminded by Kana Chan that she got scared that she might hurt Arata like she hurt Taichi and doesn't want him to wait. She lets him off the hook softly, trying to not hurt his feelings. She wasn't thinking about them in the first place, or at least they weren't in the foreground of her mind. What was is karuta, the decision she made seeing the message Taichi left on the sweets, Taichi's departure, her guilt feelings, with all of that going on Arata's feelings had slipped to the background. Her negative thoughts in Taichi's confession weren't only directed towards Taichi if you look carefully. She wasn't ready for either of them to say those kind of heavy words. Chitose probably knows pretty well that her sister was all about karuta. "You are smart". "it's a waste of time" " she has no hidden agenda" This could have exactly been said to Arata as well as Taichi. What Chitose doesn't know is there might be that "ah ha!!!" moment after when she suddenly sees clear. I think that happened in 234. |

The mutual understanding from the two was easily visible and how they have similar thought process going on with karuta and about the future linking the two. especially since arata knows with his move to tokyo they will be crossing paths more often, so she can comfortably give an answer when she is ready. |

I honestly don't think this would happen, at least not in this year's Meijin/Queen matches. Maybe later on in other occasions. Chihaya connecting the cards conversation was with Kana-chan, and the topic was around Mizusawa members. And maybe I'm being too skeptical/pessimistic, but is there even any card left that Chihaya still links with Arata? As far as I remember the cards that are "special" to Chihaya/Arata are: Se (her first card), Chiha (he told her it's her namesake), and Fu (her first card in genpei). All three now somehow are more about Taichi, no? In their match in the nationals Arata was offensively trying to get Se, linking it to the day they first played but Chihaya didn't notice. Instead before the nationals, Chihaya sent Taichi a message about the se card and now during the Queen match she remembers it as a card Taichi likes and not as her first card. Fu was taken by Taichi in the East/West against Arata, which Chihaya was watching and was cheering for Taichi. Both Chihaya and Arata now struggle with Chiha, for Chihaya Chiha doesn't appear in her matches and for Arata it's either he loses the card or he commits fault on it. Also Taichi's been taking Chiha often lately, the last card in the qualifier ("I'm glad Chiha helped Taichi"), and against Arata. Him taking Chiha against Arata should be a big deal since both the boys treat it like it's Chihaya herself for some reasons. There are some good reasons that might be behind this though. Maybe the trio all grow out of Chiha. It being there or not or they take it or not shouldn't give them secondary damage. It's for the good if it's the case. Is Arata Chihayafuru, the word or the card to her? I remember him being the embodiment of the word not the card but I may be mistaken. If she associates him with the word and the card, then him losing it wouldn't mean very bad to the progress to their relationship. I'm rooting for Shinobu for the last match, Chihaya winning against her when she's injured wouldn't make Chihaya's win satisfactory either. I want Suou to win, if he's so set on retiring then he should retire being the meijin. I don't think he will lose with Yukiko-chan watching. |

The funny thing is that Chihaya just forgot about Arata's confession (but she loves him, as many fans say...eh?) for 9 months. I think it was already a hint that she didn't know her feelings for the two guys. So the two of them still have a 50/50 chance, because in the final arc, her relationship with Arata froze in place and ch 229 was proof that Arata didn't know her entire journey. Therefore, I sincerely don't understand how people see love between them...she literally misses another guy when "the love of her life" is playing next to her on the same tatami mat.. |

She didn't outright "reject" him because she didn't want to walk that path again! It's clear when she sees how Kana said she suffered, she suddenly felt bad and didn't want Arata to suffer because he was waiting.....so she tells him not to wait. If she really liked him, she could have said: " I like you to but I'm concentrating on karuta now" She didn't though, because at that specific moment she had no idea what was in her heart anymore. But well people somehow formulate their own perspective even if the scene and plot is showing clearly what is being delivered still jump to their own favorable conclusion. I couldn't agree more....all of us are indeed reading the story in a subjective way, favorable to their ship. The only one who really knows what it all meant is Suetsugu San. Some thoughts are just too strong to be just "friends". Imo Chihaya has crossed that line with Taichi, without knowing what it really was....but had her Eureka moment in 234, that he was always there, her closest person....now she has to put a word on those feelings, the feelings of longing for someone as much that you imagine him, you want him to smile so badly it brings you to tears, you root for him, cry for him, you aknowledge that great support, that his perfume makes you look up, that him speaking of his romantic feelings fading makes you freeze, and bothers you....that you think "he always was here".... She was put on the path for a dream, walked it with many others, found her own dream and found her own connections to the poems, studied, looked deeper, grew more mature, went through happiness and pain to become the girl she is now freely playing in the finals against Shinobu! She isn't that 12 year old girl anymore. About the Chiha card, it's obvious it has different facets and different meanings to all 3. What interests me most, is what Chihaya's ultimate conclusion is about her poem. Arata sending Chiha now against Suou definitely doesn't feel the same as what happened between him and Taichi, the stakes weren't the same at all. Now he probably wants to play offensive karuta, and try and step out of his comfort zone, or he will lose. |

If you know chihaya properly, she outright speaks up what she feels on a subject even if she doesn't have the answer at the moment and that's what she did, she spoke what was on her mind, how she feels currently and if it was to be a rejection she would have said it quite openly regardless or conveyed it somehow. If she felt bad for Arata that he is waiting for an answer she could have said "i dont want you to waste your time waiting for me or something along those lines" and finishing this topic right then and there, which she never did. She never gave a definite answer or rejection. because one Arata understood what she meant and still Arata said it doesn't have to be right now and you can give your answer in the future when we are closer to one another, why did he say that if it was a rejection from her? Aratas not the type of person to keep pressing on or keep hopes if he has been rejected. and again when he said those lines did Chihaya correct him or say something to reject that thought process ? Nope she didnt and importantly the red blushing expressions on both their faces when they parted says it all. She was worried didn't want him to feel like a sea weed salt because of her after seeing Kana and desktomus confession depicted by Poem 97. konu hito wo Same poem which was heard by chihaya in season 1 when she saw Aratas name in the yoshino tournament and then the next card, read when Chihaya sees Arata playing, is Murasaki Shikibu’s meguriaite (poem 57) long last we meet, - a poem signifying a meeting after a long time. |

As you said so rightly, we all have our own ways of seeing this story, interpretating the poems, seeing or ignoring what is favourable to our opinion and hopes of the outcome of this story. What is left to be seen is which of us all have read the story closest to the writers opinion and what message she wants to convey with this story. The three of them definitely have left a great impression on eachother and as long as they play karuta they will always come accross eachother. Chapter 229 was definitely an emotional high for me!! |

Exactly! Even though Chihaya doesn't fully understand romance (due to inexperience) nor the feelings she holds for Arata-which she said herself back in chapter 91-she does understand what she currently feels at the moment which is why the confessions happened the way they did. Chihaya rejected Taichi because she knew she didn't feel anything special/romantic for him. If she had felt the same with Arata then I believe she would have given him a similar response back in 173-instead we have her telling him this is how she feels at the moment, and he tells her that he understands! Chihaya and her romantic feelings for Arata are something that are running through the entire story (Suetsugu said this in an interview) and the proper response has yet to happen due to Chihaya prioritizing her goals-something Arata has no problem with since he also has his own goals to focus on at the moment! Arata being okay with waiting while Chihaya still figures out her own feelings towards him just lines up with my personal headcanon-that those two will start officially dating after he moves to Tokyo and is able to spend more time with Chihaya. There's a reason poem 43 was used to describe how Chihaya felt after Arata confessed to her, it was a life-changing moment for our heroine. |

She sure figured out her feelings! Arata probably saw it too, which way her feelings are swaying because Chihaya can barely hide how she is feeling, that's how Chihaya is. It's all written on her face. Her reactions aren't hidden or mysterious but pretty straightforward. You don't have to dig too deep: it's the first obvious explanation. |

If she had been sure of her feelings for Arata, she would have returned them long ago. But for some reason this didn't happen and she forgot about his confession for 9 months (but it had changed her whole life (how did it change her life?), how could she forget it?) She wouldn't have remembered it until Kana-chan reminded her of it. Very strange, isn't it? She still doesn't remember that he confessed to her, but for some reason she is worried about Taichi's words about fading feelings. Therefore, for me, she still doesn't know how to feel towards two guys, otherwise she would have long ago reciprocated Arata, but would have asked him to wait until she becomes queen. Tbh, in the last arc, she acts like a senpai with Arata.. And why do we need parallel scenes in the shrine for Taichi and Chihaya, if we have two separated lovers? I don't deny the possibility of the chiharata canon, but there are too many controversial points. |

Chihaya literally waits for support from Taichi, dedicates her win to him and sees hallucinations about him. I don't know, but for me it is already a big hint that her feelings for him are very strong. And even Arata understood that |

There's a reason poem 43 was used to describe how Chihaya felt after Arata confessed to her, it was a life-changing moment for our heroine. About this poem and her reaction. She was indeed all starry-eyed for the first time maybe it made something bud in her. The person she admires most says something so nice to her and she's in heaven. Chihaya is someone who is very much in need of compliments because of the neglect she went through as a child with her sister being the spotlight. Now, what goes through her head after this all? Even Kana Chan who thinks she has understood it all, sees she is mixing things up with karuta. Kana chan's example of her mother finding out she was pregnant, was the right way to describe poem 43, not Chihaya's basking in her crush, not even understanding the essence of it. The follow up on this is Chihaya being giddy and blushing on the phone but when they actually see eachother....nothing really happens. In the meantime Chihaya is more thinking about what Taichi is doing than Arata, busy with making efforts to make Taichi smile and we actually never really get any sort of follow up from Chihaya about all of this until Taichi confesses....where her true realisation of what he said hits her. The negative feeling of her realisations of what they both wanted, about "Taichi going off on his own"and "Arata said", instant rejection to it all. Sensei also made something ambiguous about the rejection, something that we don't "hear" clearly....what was it? What did that "gomen". Whatever, poem 43 used in that moment sure didn't have the same impact as poem 43 used in 43 for Suou. Tbh after Taichi leaves, I feel Chihaya goes through a true life changing moment because she actually quits karuta putting everything before up to questioning. I do think Arata was Chihaya's first young girl's love but just not the love of her life ...the one she had to find out about through pain, tears and longing. |

It's clear when she sees how Kana said she suffered, she suddenly felt bad and didn't want Arata to suffer because he was waiting.....so she tells him not to wait. If she really liked him, she could have said: " I like you to but I'm concentrating on karuta now" To be honest I think it's actually easier if she wants to reject Arata, even if Arata might react "badly". Taichi leaving after the confession was hard on her because they are together everyday, going to and from school together, practicing together both in Mizusawa and Shiranami. She only meets Arata every tournament anyway, so what's at stake? They can just greet each other awkwardly even if she rejects him-- even that Taichi and her could manage doing after his leaving. possession1981 said: Exactly! I agree she may feel something for Arata, but her saying she liked Arata was way back in chapter 91. That was all the way back before Yoshino tournament, before both the guys confessed, and before Taichi left. I mean back in chapter 40-ish (?) wasn't there a scene where she said Taichi makes her nervous? Then the start of second year she put his being class A as her priority. It'd be just similar if I suddenly say, "Chihaya now likes Taichi because she said so in chapter 40.". It's been almost 150 chapters. It'd be funnier if, without any progress with Arata for now, she suddenly says "I was right in chapter 91. I still like him the same way I did in chapter 91.". --- Another thing is about Chihaya being an open book. I don't think she's that much of an open book after all. The manga makes it look comical for comedic purpose, but her being an open book is mostly just when she's playing karuta and the opponent/spectator can tell she's aiming for several specific cards. Outside that, I think the only ones who actually think of her as an open book are just the people she actually grew up with. Taichi, Tsuboguchi-san, and Harada-sensei? If she was so much of an open book then everyone in the club would have known she left the club because Taichi left after she rejected him, but instead the club members only thought she was having it hard because she didn't believe he would leave the club at all. Might be mistaken on this though. |
