THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Well, this episode had mixed emotions. Yuki is trying to overcome his personal demons while Tohru tries to fit into the role of the evil sister for the Cinderella story.

Kyo and Tohru's character chemistry is hilarious LOL. But on a serious note, you can also see Kyo's anger this episode.

Yuki continues telling his true feelings about Tohru and he sees her as a mother but he was embarrassed that feeling that's why it took him this long to realize it.
Also, we're shown Kyo's anger.
Machi showed up a bit and said a few words about Yuki.
Tohru is too pure to play the evil stepsister role.
Kyo and Tohru both of them are really adorable together.
The next episode sure is gonna be hilarious.

Tying up some loose ends this episode before we get to the play itself next week. Yuki fully explaining to Kakeru what he meant by seeing Tohru a as mother. Even though they're the same age the way Tohru feels to him is motherly. Something that Yuki has never experienced before, the love of a parent. Something he always yearned for. With two big moment cementing those feelings for him. Tohru saying that even if her memories were erased that she'd like to be friends again, and then at the end of last season when she ran after Kyo. She certainly did have a womanly, mature way about her in that moment going to rescue Kyo.

Yuki always feeling like he could complain to Tohru and be himself around her. Someone he could open up to and feel safe with, like a mother. We've seen how Tohru takes such good care of Momiji and Kisa and most recently Rin, which Yuki looks back on when he's saying all this to Kakeru. Even after trying to talk to her like a man would a woman he romantically loves like we saw earlier in this season. It just felt wrong. The love he feels for Tohru is different from that. Kakeru brings up maybe he's just twisting his feelings since he sees how Tohru is with Kyo but it's not that. He genuinely feels a motherly love from Tohru. One day maybe he can tell her how he feels and gives her an abundance of gratitude like he said.

We also got that big stairway scene with Yuki and Kyo. After seeing Yuki full backstory it's tough to watch as Kyo yells at him for having everything he could ever want while Kyo was always laughed at. Which is why he doesn't want to do the play, Kyo hates being mocked by others, very relatable tbh. But even after all that yelling Yuki just looks at him with a most somber face. Because we now know that Yuki just wanted to be friends with Kyo when they were little. Kyo himself remembering some very choice words he was told about how it's hard for him to think without hating someone. Kyo has always had such anger inside him that he wouldn't know what to do if that anger was gone. It's an important scene between the two Sohma boys as they move forward realizing more about each other.

Other great moments like when Machi said that she doesn't think Yuki is a prince at all. Her classmate says it's just her saying weird things but Yuki seems to take it a different way. From his backstory we know that his princely persona is an act he puts on to keep others away so maybe Machi sees through it. That'll come up later. Loved the Kyo x Tohru moments with her trying to grab the script back then later when in The classroom with him deciding to do the play so she won't be worried after what Yuki said. The play being rewritten should make next episode a lot of fun. Been a long time coming to see this play animated.

wow I am really early here today, Anyway let me just address the elephant in this episode which is gonna be the talk of this week for all the non-manga readers. Yes this episode was a 5/5 for few people and 2/5 for the other few who still don't understand why and blindly ship... This episode will actually put an end to a long lasting debate..

Cause in this episode one of the ships was NOT blown of water but rather was slowly dismantled piece by piece so smoothly that even Yuki supporters would also say, "I guess it was justified" and believe me it was.

Btw Congrats to the other ship which is pretty much sailing seven seas now...

Some good Tohru x Kyou moments. Will this ship actually sail. Mostly likely imo.

I've been a devoted KyoxTohru shipper for the last 7 years (still am), but am really loving Yuki as a character this season. Can't remember thinking that he was such an amazing character while reading the manga. Might even be one of my favorite characters now. Props to TMS entertainment!

Yuki realizing a lot in this episode. Mainly wanting Tohru's Happiness. I think that goes Hand in Hand with patching things up with Kyo. Yuki has always wanted to be Kyo's friend but being the Rat makes it difficult.
So Yuki knowing that Kyo makes Tohru happy wants to keep pushing him towards that eventual confession.

Second realization is that Machi doesn't see Yuki as a Prince. I found this interesting because 1. What is Machi's backstory. I think she has some sort of Issues with men due to her being anti-social. and 2. Yuki's reaction was interesting. He was almost shocked for the first time that a female didn't see him as a Prince. I think that will lead Yuki into finding out more about Machi.
I feel like the transition of Tohru (Mother) into Machi (Romantic Interest?) is really well done

Now we just have to get Kyo to overcome his fears as well. I actually felt bad for Yuki when Kyo was spurting all that non-sense towards Yuki but that Yuki face was rough. For him to put his hand through a window...man. The pain.

Holy shit that end scene though. OMFG I screamed like a School Girl lol.

Another great episode. I am looking forward to Prince Kyo and Yuki and Machi development.

Chapters 86 and 87 were adapted for this episode as the story transitions from exploring Yuki's past to the Cinderella play. Not much got changed for this episode beyond some slight extensions, changes, or removal of bits from key scenes. Here were changes I noticed in this episode:

-Yuki reflecting on his feelings toward Tohru was extended a bit for the anime with additional dialogue added into the scene.
-The bit where Kakeru passed off a soccer ball back to a soccer club member was added for the anime.
-The anime shortened Tohru’s nervous ranting about playing a stepsister in the upcoming school play.
-While walking up the stairs in the manga after Yuki arrived home, Kyo angrily muttered about being seen by Yuki in the manga.
-While a nervous Tohru was apologizing for her performance for the play, Arisa was shown patting her on the head in the manga.
-Tohru’s narration regarding developments in her school life outside of the play was shortened for the anime.
-A brief bit is removed from Ayame and Mine’s scene at the school with Mine shown glancing at some nervous female students due to her “dress-up” obsession around cute girls.
-When leaving the play rehearsal, Yuki was shown in the manga telling the class rep he was leaving.

Episode continues from last week with more explaining on why Yuki sees Tohru as a motherly figure! As much as I find the student council as wacky as they are, Kakeru was for once a great support for Yuki by listening to his struggles.. Eventho he did stay his wacky self.

The hatred of Kyo towards Yuki known no bounds, I wonder if we ever going to see them getting along better in the end. I loved the Kyo x Tohru moment at the end, Tohru blushing was super adorable!

Also those eyes of Yuki when Machi said that he's no prince... That's the sign of a new ship in the making, can't wait to see that progress!!

Every time Machi shows up she just steals the scene. For being a very quiet character she has an immense presence, at least in my book. It seems like she said just the right thing to really intrigue Yuki. I'm excited to see further development of those emotions.

He sees everybody praising Yuki, and the fact that Yuki still has his parents. But Yuki never had loving parents. Yuki is Japanese, Asian parents tend to be strict. Yuki's mother also has her own selfish expectations of her children. So when Tohru came along, she was a motherly figure. Yuki always yearned for that warmth, and comfort. That's why Tohru was so important to the Sohmas. Tohru is pure. She gives her all to accept them and support them.

And here we have chapters 86-87. There were some minor changes from the manga, nothing important.

Yuki fully explaining to Kakeru what he meant by seeing Tohru as a mother. He wants to find someone who will be at the same level as him. To need and be needed. Not only receiving but he wants to give something which only he can give. He wants to find proof that's only his that he is alive. He needs that kind of partner in life.

Some cute Kyou-Tooru moments in the house when he teases her with the script he took from her. Yuki saying it's "elementary school level of teasing" (he didn't say "Childish."). Yuki wants Tooru to be happy, so he wants Kyou to get his act together soon.

Important Yuki-Kyou stairway scene where Yuki asks if he likes making Tooru worry and Kyou snaps and yells at Yuki but Yuki just quietly looks at him and then Kyou remembers someone telling him he just needs someone to hate, or rather, not having someone to hate is a problem for him. Since Kyou has so much anger inside of him and doesn't know what to do with all that anger.

Then we have Machi saying that Yuki isn't prince-like like everyone else says and Yuki being surprised.
At the end another cute Kyou-Tooru moment in the classroom. You playboy Kyou, kyaaa. XD

And the next episode is the Cinderella play, that will be fun, can't wait! <3

Yuki's further thoughts regarding seeing Tohru as a mother figure was emotional and understandable, considering his tragic background. A place where you are fully accepted and nurtured, feeling the sense of peacefulness and gentleness of a mother as you lay to sleep is one of the sacred treasures to have for a child. Yuki truly is a mature person with not only fighting his demons but gracing Kyo with a loving smile, which angered Kyo to no end from what it seemed like. Yuki is a wonderful person.

Tohru's blush when Kyo closed in her face was precious. I wonder if this play will yield any results in terms of possible love confessions between Kyo and Tohru.

Oh, he also says this in the anime too; they just subbed it wrong. I distinctly hear him say 'shougakusei'.

I hate official subtitles sometimes...Crunchyroll screws them up TOO. >_> Netflix is the absolute worst though.

hehe tho

Kyou is embarrassed as hell. xD Look at his face...he KNOWS he's flirting with Tooru and can't stand that Yuki caught him. xD

5/5 episode ofc, I absolutely love Yuki's monologue. His relationship with Kakeru really changed, I'm glad Yuki has found a friend he could talk about personal stuff with. Finally we have more Kyo x Tohru scenes though, usually I don't really care about couples in anime but damn these two together are so cute and their blushes are adorable xD

I actually find it quite touching that Yuki has found a maternal figure in Tohru even though they're the same age; he cares for her and values her more than a friend but doesn't have romantic feelings for her and I think that's beautiful. She's filled a hole inside of him by providing him the kind of love he was missing.

I feel like this episode showed how far Yuki has come, but how much further Kyo has to go on his journey. Yuki has grown enough to begin understanding himself, be able to face the past and reevaluate his relationships with the people around him but Kyo is still at a point where he is lashing out at others and stubbornly pushing away his past and feelings.

God I love this show. I could listen to Yuki talk about how much Tohru means to him all day. It has been so well developed up to this point it's just such an amazing payoff. You can really empathize with how he feels towards her. Brilliant stuff. Kyou caving in for Tohru at the end further emphasizes how much she means to these boys.

in the previous episode's forum discussion i said that yuki seeing tohru as a mother weirded me out, but with the full explanation it makes so much sense! i guess until now i was perceiving their relationship as solely romantic, but i like it so much more now that i know it's not like that. i mean, there's only so much one can do about the development of love triangles in media, especially bc it's very overdone, so i wasn't expecting much regarding that tbh, but as a exclusively anime re-adaptation viewer, i was really not expecting this turn.

i really love this anime bc it speaks to me in an emotional level. it was never about the fantasy aspect of it, or even the romance itself, but about how one sees oneself and others, and learning how to deal with those feelings. just the fact that they approached a pretty liked ship in a platonic spectrum just adds a depth i didn't expect, even with how much i love this work.

dude i'm so satisfied with this it's kinda crazy lol

Yuki's monologue admiration to Kakeru, of Tohru being a mother figure than a romantic partner, somehow it seems all warped from the outsiders POV, but given his traumatizing history, it's not hard to see why he adores her in that special unique way. Despite his playful personality, his mentality to understanding Yuki is nice, despite "being a burden" HEH.

The upcoming Cinderella class play...sure is wacky. Tohru's nervousness to Ayame and Mina's sudden surprise and the improvisation of the play. Funny that the others wanted to see Kyo act to be their laughingstock.

BUT OH BOY...the relationship between Kyo and Yuki seems irreparable the more Tohru is involved in this love triangle, or even less their true feelings towards one another.

The one thing's for certain after this episode: the Tohru X Kyo ship is sailing. Like it or not, it's gonna be this way.

This episode was really nice. We do get to see Yuki showing his vulnerable side to Kakeru which is very rare. Though Kakeru is such a jerk throwing the soccer ball to Yuki's face though. That scene towards the end with Kyo and Yuki. Though I think I can see why Kyo is being such an 'idiot' knowing he is showing his vulnerable side too, he needs 'someone' to hate. I am still waiting for his full back story to show. Even though we already got the pieces shown here and there. Still would like it to see it in all in one like Yuki. Though Kyo would not want it. I hope he make amends soon. This is something I to see even. Him having to say those things to Yuki and complain his problems like a child to Yuki is at least a first step in my eyes. I love Kyo and Yuki, but Kyo's got to find a way to move on and let go of this negativity.

Not gonna lie, this has to be probably the smoothest way I have seen a love triangle getting solved.

And also damn, Machi left Yuki speechless. She can read him way too well, it seems.

All in all, a bit more calm episode thanks to the rehearsals for Cinderella and Ayame's fabulous (as always) intervention. As if it wasn't clear enough last week, we now got a double check on what Yuki sees in Tohru, which was still rather nice since this time, his monologue also explained all those "romantic" advances/details he had with her. In the end, he was forcing himself in trying to see her romantically because of the embarrassment he felt regarding seeking motherly comfort from someone of his same age. All pretty understandable if you ask me.

As for Kyou... man, "tense" can't even describe the few interactions he and Yuki had this time. Him snapping at Yuki in the stairway was honestly sad to see and I don't really want to start comparing backstories but taking into account his background and fate as the Cat, the possible trauma of considering himself the reason as for why his mother killed herself and all the shit Akito has put into his head, I genuinely think it's gonna be a real challenge for him to finally take all that hatred out of his system. As someone else said here, this episode did a fantastic job at showing us how much Yuki has grown and in contrast, just how far Kyou is from getting that inner peace his soul has been yearning for all this time.

And so... it seems we have the play next week. Honestly, I can't wait to see everyone's performance and particularly, I can't wait to see how Kyou and Hana-chan will interact in this new version of Cinderella. The thing I really wonder tho... is if this play will be relevant plot-wise. I mean, something like seeing some romantic development regarding Tohru's realization of feelings towards Kyou, maybe?

That is because we know Yuki's situation, Kyo doesn't. All throughout his life he is taught that he is worthless and a monster who killed his mother while Yuki is the star of the Souma house. His every action is totally justified. Everyone around him has done nothing but ignore him over Yuki since his childhood. Put yourself in Kyo's shoes. He is not acting immature because he is rash and ignorant towards Yuki, he is acting this way bcz he was made that way since his childhood. The only two people who have shown a little bit of kindness towards Kyo were Shisho and now Tohru (not counting kagura, it was a bit different). How can you expect Kyo to see what Yuki actually went through when all his life he has been hardwired to hate Yuki. His actions perfectly natural and justified, his anger and hatred towards Yuki shadows his will to understand him and Yuki has also never actually tried to understand Kyo and always made him feel inferior and mock him, he never approached him like Shisho or Tohru did, he expected Kyo to like him but he did not ever understood why Kyo actually hates him and try to fix that bcz he was dealing with his life. So yuki was also in the wrong all this time until Tohru appeared in their lives. No one in this story has bad intentions or are ignorant it is just they are suppressed in many different ways. They all are approaching life and relationships wrong but they all are justified in their actions. That is the whole plot of Fruit's Basket. Understanding relationships and others.

It's funny how some people say stuff like, "Kyo's actions towards Yuki are justified," and then turn around and say Yuki wasn't justified in being mean towards Kyo? You either have the narrative that both of their actions are justified or not.

The narrative I like to go with is that the Sohma clan sucks and they both are victims of the stupid Zodiac traditions. Neither were justified. Kyo should have not jumped to conclusions about Yuki, but it made sense why he acted the way he did. The same with Yuki. He wasn't justified in acting like a jerk towards Kyo, but after the way Kyo treated him it made sense.

In other words, their actions made sense, but neither were justified!

Now on to the episode, Tohru is a pure cinnamon bun as always. I find her moments with Kyo cute. Personally, I like Kyo best when he is around Tohru. He acts more dere around her while he acts tsun towards everyone else.

My boy Yuki is once again proving he is a brilliant character. I'm glad he is not going to be a losing character in a love triangle. His little moment with Machi was sweet.

Assuming that jab was directed towards me cause, well you quoted me. I never said Yuki's actions were not justified, take it as both being justified or not being justified but you can't say that Yuki is the superior character in that dynamic. Yuki worshipers believe he is flawless and everyone around him should treat him better (like he is some Gary Stu which he is not), especially Kyo. Maybe Kyo should not have "jumped to conclusions" but that doesn't mean Yuki is the victim of Kyo's actions, both are flawed characters I never meant to say Yuki's actions are unjustified, from where I stand both Yuki's & Kyo's actions are justified but are wrong (no hypocrisy here), Justify doesn't mean it should always be morally right, situations change and so does definitions of "justification".

What I meant was stop worshiping Yuki and ignoring his flaws, I am not saying you did it but people in this thread are making it seem that Yuki is the victim of Kyo's outbursts and hate which he is not and that is just wrong to even assume.

Chihayafuru has the same issue with all the Arata worshippers, no wonder both Arata and yuki has less favorites on Mal than Taichi and Kyo.. (just mentioning not attacking)

I do agree that there are other Yuki fans who act like he is flawless and completely blameless in his whole rivalry thing with Kyo. However, I've seen A LOT more Kyo fans that act like all of his actions are justified and right. Maybe not on here, but there are a lot more of those on other sites. It's always, "Poor Kyo, he is going to be locked up! People are always so mean to him! He needs Tohru because he is sad HAWT cat boi". So I think it is unfair that you are acting like this is mutually exclusive to Yuki fans. :/

Why bring up MAL favorites? Not in all cases, but in most cases there are usually bots who favorite characters. Look at 5-toubun favorites. Itsuki is number 1 which makes absolutely no sense. If you actually go in the fandom, you know Miku and Nino are the most loved.

Also you shouldn't base a character's worth on their popularity. Some popular characters are typically liked for the most shallow reasons. It has nothing to do with their worth as a character.

Anyways, I don't want to get in a long quote forum argument. I believe Kyo is not all that innocent, but he is still a great character. And you probably feel the same way with Yuki. That's okay we are all entitled to our opinions. Good day! ^^

As a whole, Yuki's long monologue about Tohru was fascinating. It might seem weird at first to find a girl the same age as you as your "mother" figure, but one listen to to Yuki's explanation and what's he's been through during his whole life and you can't help but agree with him completely. It's another reason as to why Tohru is very precious to the Sohma's. =)

Yuki really wants to be more friendly wth Kyo, but with the circumstances that has happened already, that's going to be a big hurdle for Yuki to clear, as we can see from his small talk with Kyo on the staircase, Kyo's path to becoming a more calm person is still a long one for him to conquer.

Despite that, his moments with Tohru, both when he teased her with the book and the last cute scene in school, always makes me happy. His path to bettering himself might stil be long, but compared to when we first saw him, Kyo has improved himself and his interactions with Tohru does prove that.

Can't wit for the "revised" Cinderella play next week! =D

So the start of the episode was about Yuki coming to terms on his feeling for Torhu, which was very emotional as showed how he had tried to change the way he felt for her, it was good to see how he really feels.

And the other part of the episode was about the play, it was nice to see that they altered the script to fit to the cast more that fitting the case to the play. i have a feeling that during the play that there is going to be some real emotion conveyed.

True, why you bring MAL favorites to judge the character's worth that's damn stupid.

Now into the episode... I find it weird that he loves Tohru as "mother" when he's at her age, i find it more believable with Kakeru said he's simply feels inferior for his feeling to Tohru isn't as strong as Kyo, Yuki's feeling for Tohru is just simply isn't romantic.

The hate from Kyo after saw Yuki's monologue is now feels like an outlet. I hope Kyo can get mature as soon as possible. Kyo is so smooth tho when it comes to seduce Tohru.

On the kyo and Yuki thing I would also like to add my two sents.
From the start of the series I've seen quite a few people disliking how mean and how superior and even arrogant (some say) Yuki acts towards Kyo.That is actually true to some extend but after everything we've seen lately can you blame him? Kyo has projected nothing but hatred towards him from the start so I understand why he wouldn't wonna take the moral high ground
But at the same time on Kyo's behalf the rivalry is not as one sided as some Yuki fans claim it to be. Yuki's hatred towards kyo is not just him reacting to kyo, it was additionally created by the envy he always felt for him... Not to mention he is the one that starts a lot of their fights
Kyo is not just hating on Yuki for the sake of being mean and tsundere, there is a lot of unresolved trauma involved and we'll just have to see how everything unfolds...

On a side note I'm happy for how positive (for the most part) the reaction to Yuki's feelings for tohru have been so far.. I remember it being such a sock in the manga for a lot of people... But I've even been seeing people guessing it episodes before the reveal.. I think the anime handled it very good

And lastly kyo x Tohru was GOLD this week

As a Kyoru shipper, this episode pleases me.

But for real, they're one my favorite couples because they can make something that was less than a hug look like a love confession. Their chemistry is unbelieveable.

I love how Machi straight up said that Yuki was not a prince in her eyes. She doesn't fawn over him like the other girls.

Also, that Kyoru moment at the end. I won't deny it, I squealed lol

My favorite episode : Adorabe KYO, TOHRU, YUKI

-- I'm glad to see YUKI becoming joyful & having Clarity in his life. His depression is disappearing. He knows what's going on with KYO & TOHRU.
-- KYO still finds himself in the pit. He is not trying to get out of this pit by himself (maybe he think its his responsibility as a zodiac member even if he hates it). It might take time for others to reach him OR It might not happen until TOHRU realizes her feelings for KYO.
-- TOHRU might still be unknown of the feelings she has for KYO.

It is definitely my favorite episode so far, after seeing "Joyful" YUKI.
TOHRU was adorable when KYO teased her ; KYO later gets embarrassed (unintentionally gets teased by YUKI) when YUKI joins the conversation. :)

Man I feel for both of them. I feel like the reason Kyo thinks Yuki has lived his life like a prince, is probably because that's all he's heard from the maids and no doubt Akito has probably taunted him about it. T^T
