This finale seems rather rushed and makes me regret the disappearance of multi-part stories. I'm sad to say the entire second half of the series is a disappointment to me. Just monster-of-the-week stuff after the pathos and grit of the first half.

Dororo being a girl all along is an odd twist. I suppose it's supposed to underline the perversity of the age of war; Dororo is pretending to be something she's not. I suppose her parents raised her this way because Dororo's father told her "boys don't cry" in the flashback story.

I wonder if Hyakkimaru is supposed to be very perceptive for having noticed the truth? Dororo was splashing around naked in a river a few episodes ago so contrarily I have to say she wasn't doing that good of a job hiding it.

This revelation changes the impression of this bit from episode 22 a little:

Have to agree with Fronzel about the whole second half of the series and the rushed finale were enough to bring it down to a 6. Which is disappointing as I rather enjoyed the show early on despite the visuals.

Who was Hyakkimaru's father talking to in the end? Didn't Hyakkimaru kill them?

those were just their mortal appearances or something.
here the demons themselves are immortal; depending on what sub you use, it is explained they are copies

One thing I found funny was we see him get his right arm back this episode, yet in previous episodes he felt pain from burning his right hand and he got skin back specifically showing it changing on his hand. I mean it was still prosthetic at that time.

I guess even Dororo wasn't aware she was a girl?

Also the anime finale is almost completely different from the manga's last chapter

This episode looked like people realized at the last minute they were about to close the series !
Also, what's this nonsense about a peaceful life with the villagers? Daigo being out of the equation, this province is left without a head in the middle of warring states...

3/5

Overall:
An increasingly interesting series with a strong concept and settings, up to the second half/last third where it dives into an even more episodic style (with a few good eps) and forgets its story until the very last episode, randomly putting out a finale.
Good to see a familial program from a period where peoples would not take children for precious things to protect from every harsh reality.

Score: 6/10 Now, let's hope for a reprint of the manga.

@Switch_Z Yes, she was not.

Mach 12, 2021 REPRINT !! (Deluxe !)

I'm not sure I like how things turned out at the end. It is still surprising though, how with the absence of Dororo, Hyakkimaru was able to slay so many demons sequentially. I'm really going to miss Dororo's voice in this one.

This 1969 version really is superior compared to the 2019 remake because this got one thing the remake doesn't .... a pet dog Nota with a hat!

Jokes aside incredible to be able to see the original that's over 50 years old but disappointed because of the rushed end without having much built up since it followed a more episodic structure (monster of the week). Also some inconcistencies to Hyakkimura missing body parts but never really depicted like that.

The Second half was clearly a letdown, but this being 51 years old I did really enjoy myself. I've seen the remake and decided to watch this as well. This is also now the oldest media I've ever seen.

Overall the show is good. This finale was very rushed. It had all the needed character moments and ends on an incomplete feeling letting the audience think what might happen to the characters.

This show technically aired during the season of the very first moon landing[Apollo 11], July 20 1969.

Finally completed with this show
Hoge hoge tara tara hoge tara pon... I do like many of my language’s old songs and here is this old anime Japanese song.... liked the part in the song where it comes “Aouk hade nai sora no shita......”
And damn it

Also, I didn’t read the manga but

I have mixed thoughts for this anime as this is the oldest one that I still have watched but a nice watch.
Time for the 2019 version... would be good to see this old work in new art though the song ^o^

If there was no one else within a 5-kilometer radius from Shimamura, and she was in a deep sleep and an all-knowing deity just happened to reassure me that she wasn’t going to wake up the next 24 hours, maybe I’d get bored after 23 hours and I might kiss her once to relieve some boredom...

Wow speaking of a rushed ending! If you compare this episode to the previous one, you feel like you missed a good chunk of the series.

I couldn't bear to watch the rest of the second half of the series after the obvious tonal shift in episodes 14 and 15, so in order to preserve my high opinion of the show, I skipped to the end, which I've never done before. The final episode, like all the second half stories, would have benefited from more time, but it delivered some decent moments. Overall, I really enjoyed the first half - the visual and sound direction was on point, and the stories had some real grit and emotion to them. The second half was just impossible to take seriously. Curse the studio executives who forced the change.
