Seems like a show like SAO trapped in a game, saw that the manga is serialized since 2012 and has 7.8 os score not that bad at all, saw that the 1st ep will be one hour long so I'm kinda optimistic about this one.
Source material readers what do you think about this series? Good? Bad? Great?
Long time ago since i was here on MAL and basically the second thing im doing is replying to a thread, yeah that can only go well and im sorry in advance for any misspelling/bad grammar/drifting off the topic etc.
So DG is getting an anime adaption which makes me really happy but also somewhat worried that the adaption wont meet my expectation like others from last/this season.
Already wrote a bit without answering the main topic eh... yeah im drifting a bit again .-.
Darwins Game (Manga) had a bit of a ruff start for me because it seemed to have an "awkward" drawing style, probably because I read alot of other manga with similar styles before that one but after a couple of chapters I really got into DG the story, without spoiling anything I hope, is like your classical main protagonist Kaname Sudou who got dragged into the so called "D-Game" from a friend I already forgot the name again and now has to participate to survive.
Some fancy stuff like supernatural powers, called "Sigils", are mixed in but are unlike your comparison SAO not like overpowered or giving them a huge edge over everyone else... at least not obvious because the strength and/or use of the sigils are either limited or has some drawbacks like:
someone has the ability to create doppelgänger/copies of him and fight with them but he has to concentrate to maintain them or our MP can create basically any weapon he is familiar with but cant create to complicated things or he does not understand
Because of the spoiler button Ive lost track what I wanted to say... nevermind that.
So the story is in my opinion better than SAO also because the aspect of death game and survival in SAO never really got me like "yeah its a death game but i almost cant feel any emotion coming from SAO characters, in DG I feel some emotions coming from the characters (its some time i last read DG so maybe im just imagine it now)".
Now Im feeling like I wrote way to much and didnt even answered the threads question so heres a quick opinion from me:
Its a great manga which can probably hold a place in my top 10 manga of all time (reminds me to actually do my manga list...), has some character developement, the story is interesting even the not so important chapters where you basically get some information about random stuff about how DG works, the world, etc and the whole idea is also interesting but maybe not that unique (I read some other manga with the "death game" genre if thats so called).
Of course it also had some bad things but for me those were just smaller details or things that didnt interrupt the story that much so I could just ignore them.
Yep now Im sure that I wrote to much... well thats how I think about DG hope I wasnt annoying or something and you now have an opinion about the source material maybe I will start using MAL a bit more and improve my replies hopefully.

so is there any deaths or emotional stuff or is it just that cleache no one dies type of story
Best way I can describe it is mirai nikki, but actually good, with JoJo-esque fights. It's not just your typical raw power shounen fights; they're often psychologically based where the characters have to figure out the opponets ability and how to counter it.
I love the manga and am really looking forward to this adaptation. Hopefully the anime is going to live up to the source material, and from what I've seen from the previews it's looking promising.

Well yeah the manga setting is basically a "deathmatch" with everyone trying to survive so yeah there will be some deaths and emotionalwise, well my friends tell me that Im sometimes really cold blooded but if you want to hear my view there is if I remember correctly maybe 2 scenes where theres somewhat emotional stuff there but it wasnt really long in focus (if even).

I can only agree but as said Im somewhat scared that the studio/producer are somehow screwing things up but theres still hope that it will end fine (already got my expectations pretty low lately T-T )
I haven't read the manga in a while (kinda dropped it but intend on picking it up later) and I might be biased towards it because it appealed to me too much back then.
To be honest I am probably going to re-read the whole thing. Anyways, from what I remember it was amazing with great character development. (Although it felt pretty quick for me but that might be because of how I binge-read it.)
I am not really into death game stories because they always feel really cliche and forced. Even then, somehow DG managed to overcome my expectations and it's still sitting on my favorites list.
My main concern is, the same as basically any other adaptation that had my favs as their source materials, a bad adaptation. And well, with a bad adaptation it doesn't matter if the source material was good or bad to begin with.
I can give you my word that it is good but how good the anime'll be is just a 50/50 as always.

How is the death game exactly like? Does it have edgy cliché characters like Mirai Nikki or the characters are actually good and normal?
Conceptually, it's pretty great and the characters do follow suit too, you'll get a good range of characters with typical personalities but their sigil is what makes them "whole" if you know what I mean.
One thing for sure, nothing is easy in this game if you're in the bottom with no resource.
Definitely worth the shot when it comes to the battle Seinen genre.
- It's a story about a high school student that doesn't spend 90% of its time in the school.
- It has interesting story with a good mix between serious moment and comedic moment.
- Main character is smart. He starts weak but improve fast. (not OP).
- There are many girls around MC but they are NOT his harem. The romance is almost not exist, actually.
- There are fan services but very few. No rape.
I thought that this was just going to be a dark isekai harem. But fortunately it doesn't appear to be the case based off of this thread and the trailer. I'm way more hyped for this now
