Ok, here's my take.. As noted in the article, the last time Oshii directed a series was in the 80s, and this series was Urusei Yatsura, which was a slapstick comedy too. Back then he had very limited creative control over the anime, but this changed when he finally got the chance to both write and direct the second film (Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer). The film, released in 1984, was the first work of his to follow the distinctive Oshii style, i.e. dark and philosophical, although he also included a great deal of slapstick humor. So even if the new work is a slapstick comedy, that doesn't necessarily mean that this will be a departure from the Oshii style that we all know and love. |
