I want to watch it but don't know if I should watch the 2000 version first, how are these two shows related?

The 2000 version is anime original and takes place directly after episode 3 of the current Boogiepop series.

You don't have to watch the 2000 version if you just want to watch the current version.

You actually need to watch this one before the 2000. Like Chaos_Alfa said, its an original story that takes place between 3 and 4 of this anime (between volume 1 and 2 of the LNs)

The 2000 one is a spin-off based on what could happen after the events of the first boogiepop novel.

The first boogiepop novel got rushed like hell in the first 3 eps of this adaptation.

@Chaos_Alfa
So watch 3 episodes of 2019, then go watch the whole 2000 and then continue with 2019?

No the 2000 Anime has some scenes from book 6 which will be adapted in the new anime next week with the 2-hours special.
I would watch the old anime after that. Well the old anime is completely off canon...

You do not have to watch one to consume the other.

I'm pretty sure you don't "need" to do that. The director (or was it the writer?) of the first TV show said in an interview that he made the TV show in such a way that it was standing on its own as well as being a complement for the books.

If you want, there is also a movie (for the first book, I think).

edit: finished the 2000s show and I can confirm it stands alone very well, The few informations from the original story you need are given to you throughout the show.
But for those interested in the 2019 series, better stick to it, the previous TV series has little to with it and is busy doing its own thing (exploration of certain themes through a series of various cases), inspired by facts from the novel.

I strongly recommend you watch 2019 ver. It is easier to understand and more faithful to the light novel..

Well, the first series didn-t try to adapt the novels but only build around an event and some characters. So you can't compare their faithfulness.
