Me thinks Tanishi and Aoyama incident will be repeated by their 'kouhai' haha. Anyway, a bit disappointing with the ending, because the 5 years time skip and sending MC to jail was such a bitchslap. They should also give more details that leaving the readers hanging with that 'last panel'. This manga is good, although it deviates from traditional shounen growing/maturing up, it has it own mix of charm. ' Life sucks' had to be one of the theme. Good thing for MC was he found his own calling and manage to defend them with his abilities. Beating his love rival and protecting the kid. Speaking of the kid, he certainly became a strong professional boxer and he's even taller than him!

And oh wow, Chiharu still hold a grudge against him. She has fallen so much she can't pick herself up anymore. Oh, and sucks for Aoyama.

SPOILERS SPOILERS

I've only seen the raw and couldn't figure out - Hana raised the kid, and isn't romantically involved, is she?? (That would be truly worldshattering for Tanishi)

I doubt so, that wasn't any indication either.

Tanishi had sex with Hana before he went to prison and the kid grew up strong, became a boxing champion and wanted Tanishi to be his manager. It's probably because the kid was guilty and want to compensate the gratitude he owe to Tanishi.

It's a happy ending in my eyes but the journey to this ending has so much bumps on the road.

I gotta start by asking... did Tanishi and Hana have sex!? When was that? I have to know - that was way too long in the making.

-

I looked through the raw of volume 10, since that still (2015...) hasn't been translated yet. And oh man. Whaaaat the heck.

I can't believe a mangaka would do this to the readers. Why in the world would they send Tanishi to prison? And for FIVE WHOLE YEARS!? So many parts of Boys on the Run have felt like actual slaps over the face (everything involving Chiharu, for example, holy hell I hate her), and then the author pulls something like that on us? That's not a slap. That's a metal bat swung by a professional batter to the throat. Not even the ending to the entire story is allowed to give a bit of satisfaction; no happy ending for Tanishi. Just five years of prison for something that comes out of the blue in volume 10.

Is this part of "netorare" or something? Is that what this manga is, really? Like, how - in which way - are you supposed to enjoy this?

There have been so many parts of Boys on the Run that have been funny, nice, and heartwarming, but... I can't help but feel they pale in comparison to all the Aoyama betrays Tanishi and the Chiharu betrays Tanishi and goes to Aoyama and the Chiharu gets an abortion with Tanishi's help but still roots for Aoyama and the Hana almost gets raped and the Gen comes back and is absurdly horrible and the Chiharu seduces Tanishi to take Hana away from him and the 5 years prison and the and the and the...

I can't take it. I just can't take it. I was so happy for a great many parts of the manga, but it just kept crushing that happiness. Every. Single. Time.

Edit: I am, however, happy Tanishi and Hana finally ended up and stayed together. I probably couldn't have lived with anything else. In this case, though, all isn't well that ends well - somehow, the constant emotional beatings paired with the 5-year coup de grâce weigh heavier.

Have you read the author's other work, Ressentiment? Bit of a SPOILER but both end with a "minor victory" with the child having hope and promise, but the adults not faring particularly well.

IMO, With Boys, the mc made *MANY* mistakes in the "don't bring up a woman's past" department. It's more than "life sucks". It's that other people (women) aren't perfect, so don't make them be "pure".

I'd also add that it's the mc's fault that his first love and the playboy get together in the first place. Really, if someone you're attracted to drops a hint that they'd like to spend time with you, DO NOT invite another person!

Can somebody please explain me why did MC go to jail? Actually, can you please retell the whole volume 10 in short. Saw the japanese raws, but didn`t get the story, for obvious language reasons.
He took the blame for the homemade bomb that the kid made in response for the bullying (the kid didn’t told the truth [that he was the one who made the bomb]) thus he was the one who detonate the bomb in the eyes of the parents, teachers & kids (remember that he entered the class room running and without the kid testimonial he seems like he entered the room to detonate the bomb [not stopping the kid which he did]) thus MC was labeled a terrorist then sent to jail.

This story would have been better if it weren’t for the epilogue. Chapter 115 ended perfectly BUT it had to end with the bomb going off. Sure the tension of a bomb going off does give weight to Shuu’s furstration with bullying, something that seems all too relavent with school shootings at this point in time, but if it hadn’t been able to go off then, that would have been fine too, this story doesn’t really need domestic terrorism. Comparing this story to Ressentiment, Boys on the Run isn’t as cathartic. With Ressentiment, it’s ending is bitter sweet but fully understandable. It’s shown that Maria is just settling for Takuro and Takuro makes it clear that he would rather go 2D over 3D. With BOTR, it loves to deal all kinds of bad hands to Tanishi. This sense of real life unpredictability does help this kind of drama driven story but it can really detract when all we see is Tanishi putting his hand on a stove and saying “owww” only to put it back on the stove. My only saving grace argument for this story is, now that Tanishi has hit his lowest point the only other way to go is up?

Only 5 years in prison for attempted murder of an entire class of middle-school students and their parents with a bomb? Really?

Why is he taking the blame anyway, the juvenile law protects the kid, if he was only charged 5 years the kid would be out in no time. IIRC the media can't even reveal child criminals' names, he could just continue his life in a different school.

Not to mention that he is not doing the kid a favor, that kid totally should take some time in juvenile detention center to reflect on his actions. Surely not everyone in his class was bullying him, not to mention all the parents, he just tried to kill dozens of innocent people.

...

The prison/time skip came out of nowhere and didn't make much sense, much like the rest of the manga. But I can't say I feel bad for MC, he was annoying as hell the entire manga.

In the end Chiharu was the only character I liked, the MC deserves everything she did to him.

I will never get along with anyone who likes Chiharu by the end. Granted I liked her at first, and thought the two made a cute couple. Turns out she always shit talked the MC behind his back, even when he had good intentions, and even used his actions (like when she asked for porn) against him. She constantly lied to him. Chiharu tried to seduce him near the end there, knowing full well what the situation was when he went to see Hana, and framed him when she didn't get her way, with the purposeful intention of "accidentally" sending the text to Hana. She because a manipulative person and I hope she only suffers from it. You don't hate someone like she claimed to do, yet still make advances like she did.

As for the bomb incident, he probably got lucky in that there were no casualties, so his sentence was lenient, and we don't actually know how powerful it was. As for why he took the hit and not the kid, regardless of weather the media reveals info about him, that kid's life would be over. Plus according to the paper, all the parents claim to have seen Tanishi holding the bomb, apparently no one saw it in the hands of the kid. Did you even read the end? The kid became a champion, and seems to have everything in order. If you think the kids needs to be sent to a detention center to "reflect", then you are part of the problem. He was clearly bullied by the majority of the class. At one point the boys were going to get the girls in on it to say Tanishi molested one of them. While sure not EVERYONE may have been in on it, the majority seemed to be. Being bullied can push people to make irrational decisions simply to escape bullying. The kid was literally seconds from suicide. That means he needs help, not prison.

@Sadsadface
>Someone tries to kill 50 people.
"It's fine, I'm sure he won't do it again."
What could go wrong, right?...

Many people get bullied, I did too, they don't end up doing things that will get unrelated people killed. Even if you assume the entire class was bullying him, which is realistically impossible, there's still the fact that the kid chose the parent-teacher meeting day of all days to blow himself up. Why, just to get more people involved?

I don't care if the author says things ended up okay in his short epilogue, my point is that it could end up not being okay at all, and it's not a risk one should take. I do feel bad for the kid, but imagine someone like that going to the same school as your kid. He needs to be kept in check if he is a threat to other people's lives.

Also I don't see why you think his life would be over for a crime he committed in primary school, which means he's like 11 at most and doesn't have criminal liability, and the Juvenile Law of Japan is fully protecting him. He wouldn't go to "prison" but a reformatory home or juvenile correction center, which are supposed to have a rehabilitative philosophy and are not focused on punishing. How successful they are in reality is arguable, but either way, it's better than just letting him go to school like nothing happened with the risk of him blowing the place up again one day.

And yeah I'm aware how bad of a person Chiharu is and everything she did to the MC. It's just that I really hated the MC so it felt good to see him get cucked, and at least she was a more realistic character than the rest of the cast. Obviously I don't like her personality.

Eh, really mixed feelings about this one, just like most mangas from the author - the author sure seems to put big part of himself into protagonist, which is never a good thing for a serious manga.

On one side it's an overall okay story, on the other hand it's a bit pathetic how author puts his personal problems into manga.
Usually the morale of the story is how you get over such petty things, but I think author got stuck in the middle of it which makes the whole point of the manga moot.

Characters are decent, story is okay, but the depth is lacking, there is really no reasoning for the things happening.

6/10 - read worse, but not something I would actively suggest to anyone.

The emotions in the final pages were beautifully conveyed, especially with the Shuu's drawing being a callback to the first panel.
Even though the sunflower's use as a symbol was only seen a couple times outside of these instances and not to its fullest potential, this created an extra layer of continuity which I wholeheartedly enjoyed.

But the epilogue didn't really emphasize the memorability of this manga in any way.
I found the last line of Chapter 115 to be powerful for its simplicity and how all the feelings of the main cast culminated to a resolve to be a family, but seeing the aftermath took away from that.

Its interesting how this manga had the happiest ending (compared to Ressentiment and I am a hero) yet the MC had to go through way more sh*t. Overall a really good manga, with mixed feeling about the ending since the final message is a bit ambiguous.

Kengo Hanazawa still deserves more respect, and we need an extra chapter with Chiharu getting beaten to death by Ichi the killer.

Okay. I have to agree that the epilogue took away the good things at the end. Tanishi would already have a pretty shitty life, working as newspaper delivery boy, living at a small room with Hana and the boy, never becoming a pro and so on. I can't understand why the author also took five years from him. The life is pretty bad, yeah, I get it, you don't have to shoot his head at the happiest moment in his life to prove it to me.

Unless that I think it's a great manga, I hoped to see a bit more happy things (I really wanted to see tanishi showing aoyama how he is doing well). But okay, I was okay with the story ending at 115. It's was a good journey.

Well, that was quite an ending. Like always, Tanishi tries to do a good thing and it blows up in his face.

Overall, this manga was entertaining in the same way “Watch people die inside” compilations or shows like the Office are. The absolute cringe and second hand embarrassment I felt reading this manga is something I haven’t felt in a while.

Although if I’m being honest, Tanishi deserved almost very bad thing that came his way. Chiharu and Aoyama are no saints but neither is Tanishi. Personally, I think Hana deserves someone a lot better than the guy who’ll put out every time someone touches his dick. Although being a flawed human being is what this manga is about.

If nothing, I appreciate that this manga didn’t go the more traditional empowerment route for Tanishi. He’s still a mess at the end of the series, although hopefully, Hana and Shuumai keep him on the straight and narrow.

tl;dr
First half was 8/10.
Sharp decline during the second half and never delivers on the great evolution of the main character that was set up in the early chapters. He's mediocre to start and slightly less mediocre at the finish, just with a few more bruises.

- - - - - - - - -

Takes a SHARP decline after a certain point. Feels like the ending came out of nowhere and was just to wrap up the story as it became kind of aimless. Main character is frustrating but realistic in the worst ways. His life and evolution revolved SOLELY around women. He had no real motivation beyond impressing women. He makes no real major personal strides to a dream or end goal beyond impressing someone else.

However, even after saying all this, this manga is absolutely worth reading at least once.

This kinda felt like a big slap in the face if I’m being honest. It felt like it ended way too early or that there was supposed a lot more to the ending. It was very abrupt too. Although Tanishi is pathetic and almost as bad as Chiharu and maybe even Aoyama, I kinda still wanted him to gain at least one win in his life without messing up even though most of his actions throughout the series are beyond stupid and outright deserved. This ending felt unsatisfying and unfair but maybe that’s the point, I’m not sure. The manga makes it clear that society can be beyond garbage filled with horrible and flawed people even until this day, I guess you can say it might even be more realistic that way. I did enjoy most of the manga though but I’m definitely disappointed to say the least. One thing I do respect is how merciless and ruthless the author is to his characters, he pulls no punches.

Ok at least it's a happy ending I guess?

I think 115 was a W ending but then this I guess while realistic does kinda make it a downer and a bit disappointing ending. At least the kid grew up to be a champion.

Tanishi going to jail really sucks. I guess Tanishi's life has been L after L still. He was at fault for it though. It's his fault for messing his own life up but I wished to see more of his development but we got prison time skip. At least he beat Gen and smashed Hana, a bit of happiness before prison.

I think this was a great manga that made me more frustrated than any other. I can't rate it higher than a 7 or 8 I think despite how well in some ways this manga was.

Good read though. I binged it all today right before the next when I start school again at 6 am. Gotta sleep now. I'm screwed. This was good but I really can't stand it as well. I guess Tanishi can't just take an W at the end for once. This was a manga with some 8 or 9 moments but then that's it. We never really got delivered on a great character development or change. Sure he beat Gen fucked Hana adopted the kid but then had to go to prison. He's better but not really that different. If we had a couple more chapters showing he has really grown now and isn't just good at not giving up. I won't reread this probably but definitely a good one-time read.

Vacuum sucker still a bitch at the end too.

I'll give it a 7.5/10 and round up to 8 on MAL I guess.

Yeah I agree. I guess the manga could be described as realistic but even then watching Tanishi fail basically every single time and have a horrible conclusion by taking the fall and going to prison felt unsatisfying and pointless considering that Tanishi was at least very slowly growing throughout and all that slow buildup was pretty much for nothing. Wasn’t much but at least he’s changed slightly. I enjoyed the manga overall but I can’t give it a high rating especially after that ending. Also I’m really not sure what the author wanted to do with Tanishi’s character near the end of the series, it just felt like he was torturing him.
