I don't understand this sport

So, boxers wear gear to deal stronger punches and to protect themselves from blows. But, since both of them wear the gear, it is effectively just a normal boxing match except damage to the head and body is much greater and the risk of death is higher. Then why not just do normal boxing? Or boxing with brass knuckles if the objective is seeing people bleed and get fucked up?

The only purpose of this is to look cool and make joe seem like a badass when he wins without any gear.
