Question in the title, basically.

Which do you think I should watch, the original or new one? I randomly came across the opening theme for franchise on YouTube and it sounds bloody amazing. I'm glad that both the original and new one have the same theme.

Uchuuu no Senkan, YAAAA-MAAAA-TOOOOOOO

Anyways, please let me know what you think.

The new one is overall cleaner and has better action. The story is about the same.

Sorry for the late reply.

I've been watching the old one and I'm currently on episode 14 in 2202. Absolutely loving it. The animation and action is a huge upgrade and I just cannot skip the opening theme—bloody legendary.

The remake is better in just about every way.

The remake manages to.....
1) Clear up a lot of plot holes that are present in the original.
2) Have a bigger cast of characters, and it's actually a more developed one than the original despite the greater numbers of characters to focus on.
3) Erase a lot of gross fanservice from the original, giving this remake a more serious and mature tone which I think helps it.
4) Improve the pacing a TON. For example, it only takes 6 episodes to get where the original was story-wise after 8 episodes. Without leaving out anything of importance at all. This remake is so damn good at making efficient use of its time.

The 1974 original has like.. Only 1 female character in the entire show, and she's literally just there to serve as eye candy and fanservice bait and is given no important roles in the show. This remake has fleshed out her character lots, and given her purpose, and has also introduced other female characters (that don't exist in the original) and made them feel important too. It's amazing all around.

Honestly, I don't think there's really any point to watching the original version over the remake unless you're just an anime history nerd who wants to watch it for its historical significance. 2199 kinda renders it obsolete.

Hi! I don't know if you're still wondering what to watch next, but it should be like this:

1. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (2012-2013)
2. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshimeguru Hakobune (2014)
3. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (2017-2019)
4. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2205: Aratanaru Tabidachi (Not released yet)

Of course you can watch the old one too, but if you're planning to watch the remake that began in 2012, then this should be the right order. I think you can watch 2202 right after 2199, the 2014 movie is supposed to be a side story, but I'll watch it anyway xD

Hope this was helpful.
