Damn, what a fantastic final episode. Emotionally the last two episodes made me kinda angry at Ibuya for being so stubborn and leading so many of his countrymen to death for essentially nothing but pride, but thematically his actions made sense with his character and also really drove home the message that people like that, who can't adapt to change, get swept away by the waves of history. Meanwhile Tezuka and Okon have been pretty adaptable throughout all of it and they are still around 10 years later. And despite my frustration with Ibuya, there's also a bit of admiration for staying true to your beliefs no matter the situation or consequences.

And that short message before the ED really added even more impact for me. It's depressing to learn that Ryouan died shortly after that but it was really inteesting to learn that it was based on Tezuka's great grandfather.

I definitely feel that I want to rewatch this at some point, while looking up a bit more of the history and historcal personalities for the era to get the whole context, since the show managed to do a very good job of containing itself to the perspective of the main characters and only narrating us through the events they were not directly involved in.

Overall this was a solid 8 from the start for me and it stayed consistent throughout all the episodes but the final two really managed to be fantastic and bring it all together in a tragically beautiful conclusion and that pushed it to a 9/10 for me for sure. It was an amazing show for sure and it really is a shame it wasn't subbed until a week ago. Much thanks to Orphan fansubs for making this available to western audiences!

Although I expected it, Ibuya was still able to make me angry too with his actions, especially since it seemed like that he found a new reason to give his life meaning. But oh well, everyone has his own definition of a fulfilled life.

The last segment with Tezuka and Okon was a nice way to wrap this series up, even tho it's so depressing to find out that former couldn't realize his goal with Okon.

I'm so glad that this final was on par with the rest and that I picked up this gem in the first place. I enjoyed the characters, the hardships they went through and how they matured. Storywise this series had also a lot to offer, with all the historical facts and political conflicts, these kind of shows are really among the most interesting. Great stuff.

Solid 8 or rather 8,5 for me. Already looking forward to read the manga too.

Thank god they didn't show his death,we already seen enough deaths. Also the direction in last episode is 11/10. Soliders dying while Ibuya getting married in comfort simultaneously. Both were great characters.

Does anyone know what happened to Otsune? Whose husband assassin got killed my Ibuya? The women at shrine was definitely the different one.

What a finale. What a beautiful and tragic conclusion, and such an appropriate one for a man as unchanging as Manjirou. One who would stand against the tides of time rather than be swept away by them, even if he's the last one left.

This show was a real rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I felt tense, I felt elated. Despite its flaws, I thoroughly really enjoyed my time with Hidamari no Ki. Such a shame it only got subbed last year. Now let's see MAL get its shit together and add the characters to the database already. I'd like to change up my favourites a bit.

This whole story was a great character study about a mentally disabled manchild, like a darker Forrest Gump set during the Bakumatsu. It's funny how everyone around him kept talking to Manjiro using big words and ideas for over a decade while mistaking his lack of understanding for stoicism. Despite knowing and talking to so many big players in the world of politics and the military, an entire civil war manages to pass him by almost entirely, and then he commits suicide at the last possible minute for no good reason, ruining the life of yet another poor woman. It's quite an achievement living through such a historical period and failing to develop your character in the slightest.

Ibuya Manjirou, you foolish samurai! really hoped he would have a happy end with his new wife Aya and adapted to the new era but it seems he stayed true to his ways with his loyalty in the shogunate unshattered even after all the bad stuff that happened. Overall great series with lots of interesting characters and the historical events that happened at the end of the shogunate. Really interesting to know Tezuka Ryouan was an ancestor of the creator and legendary ''Father of manga" Osamu Tezuka

Great finale.
In the end, Ibuya just couldn't let go of his promise and his loyalty to the Shogunate. He threw his happy future life away to keep his pride as a warrior.

Not only is this criminally underrated but also unpopular. A true hidden gem.

This became my definition of a hidden gem, currently less than 800 people watched it among the three databases I know of, and although not flawless and admittedly biased, it is a very good show.
