This anime was just breathtaking and simply amazing, the emotional rollercoaster in this season was a lot more powerful than the one before. I would really like to see a season 3, also I'll give Shogi ago as well seems like a game that I would personally enjoy.
This is my new anime of the season for winter 2018, and it may be for the year as well.
Overall I'll give this season a solid 8.5/10

3 gatsu no lion never disappoints. This anime is not only a bittersweet bomb of emotions, also its an amazing japan heritage and culture gateway only can this show turn a sport like shogi (which i barely knew existed) and glued me to the screen wanting for more. Characters are loveable and well developed, art and music makes your heart melt, overall a solid 9.5 series

Almost perfect finale, such a high note

Sangatsu is definitely one of the best shows on offer these days. I am giving this season a 7 because it had parts that disagreed with my preferences but it was still electrifyingly good when it delivered. Was increasingly and consistently good towards the end too. Watch it all up, guys

Only a handful of the shows I've watched have deserved a 10 in every sense of the rating, and Sangatsu is definitely one of them. Seriously one of the best shows I've seen in years, and I don't think anything is topping it for a damn long time.

Unfortunately, I'm not here to sit down and justify my opinions for you. Get over your end-of-season hard-ons and rewatch the series while you cuddle your daikimuras. Then, let it whisper into your ear... "This isn't a 10/10."

i regret that i had a 2 months break from this anime..

I feel like im no longer able to judge this anime properly because i forgot too much.

What i can say though is that the last couple of episodes were absolutely phenomenal.

Some of the episodes were easy 10 out of 10's for example episode 18, my god did i love that episode.

The soundtrack of this season was a masterpiece.

One of best anime I have ever seen. Closing with a last meeting with his foster mother. He was a person she could never accept as her son. So sad to see him hugging the dog knowing it was last time he would see him. On the other hand both he and his mother know that he will never come back.

The meeting with Takahashi gave Hina closure and made her realize that both he and Rei were pursuing their goals. Nice that Rei is thinking about Hina when thinking about his advancement

Hina looks more grown up in her bob not a household god. Rei's comments did help her go to school

It is not like she could never accepted him as her son, it is more like he distanced himself and didn't accepted them as his family. The mother wishes he could be able to act his age since he forced himself to play and study shogi without any time to be a normal kid.

Quite the lovely op ending for this second season and with this I must say I really am expecting a third season after this!

That first part was very fitting and that second was a good closure for this second season. This season was just great if you ask me, as it had a perfect mix between lovely and very dark moments and with the super great character development and story pacing it just made it awesome in general I must say.

All in all a pretty lovely second season of this great series!

By any chance, would you know the name of the piano song that starts playing when Hina reminisces about Takahashi during the festival(starts at 17m00)? I've been looking for it since episode 4, and can't seem to find it.

I love the mom who's like "Rei's perfect, why are my kids so shit, even if Rei was shit he would be perfect"

The old woman who cut Hina's hair must have had some ulterior motive to keep her pure, right? I wouldn't call that an "adult-like" bob. If anything, it made her look younger. If I were Rei, with that haircut and embarrassed face, I'd be thinking "Man, I can't be smashing yet, this is just a baby." I do want them to get together...maybe after her hair grows out again.

Probably the anime with best writting I ever seen. I will only give it a 9/10 because for me to give a 10/10, I have to enjoy the hell out of the show in every second. And since the first 3 episodes were the conclusion from the worst arc of the series, and I miss some impactful moments throughout the show, I will give a 9/10. But this easilly have become my 3rd favorite anime of all time. Really hope they make a 3rd season soon.

Edit: Fuck it, every time I think about the show, I only remember the perfect direction and screenplay. I'll give a 10/10

The first half was so dramatic. Glad that Rei's matured to pay a friendly visit to his old home. I felt so bad for his stepmother and his stepbrother; the father sounded like an ass. But the second half was so comforting! Leave it to the Kawamotos to cheer up anyone's day.

Hina sure is in love with her friend, does that mean Rei has no chance? That would be a bummer.

I think it's a 8/10.

I'm unable to formulate words to express how great of a series 3-gatsu no lion is !!

I watched S1 back in 2017 and while I liked it, I never really understood the beauty of this series. It was just a good 8/10 series overall. But after having watched S2, then rewatching S1 and S2 again (because why not), I'm ashamed of my past self for failing to understand the depth and quality of story telling of this series. It's miles and miles ahead of most things I've watched. The expressions that they've use to convey psycology and feelings of characters is unreal. Adding the soundtrack, visual methaphors, voice acting, art and basically everything, this series is a true masterpiece in every regard.

Thus my overall rating for both seasons is 10/10 !!

Conclusion of the bullying arc is something I'll never forget, never seen anything like it before. Reminded me of all the great teachers I've had in my life, they don't care how shitty you are they just want to help you and put a seed in your ass. Hina's substitute homeroom teacher was a real one

Hina was truly amazing, some say she was too dramatic and even compared her to Rei. I like how she wanted to resolve it, unlike Rei who hid away. She and Nikaidou showed how strong they are and inspired Rei to put more effort into everything he does. By the end of the season Rei has learned how to truly live life. He can now be the good boy who's always been inside him. His whole relationship with the Kawamoto family and Shogi players has just been wonderful. Everyone played a part. Everyone's backstory was insightful. Can't describe how enjoyable it has been to watch something so meaningful, I'm in love with how everything conncects so well.

10/10, every episode has been incredibly strong in its themes and messages. Shimada vs Saku (old guy) was something else entirely, that was the best shogi match by far and opened up how much more potential this series has. Really hope we get a season 3, all of the characters are fantastic.

My only complaint is the amount of exposition about food, I don't give a shit I just buy!!

Fitting conclusion.
TBH there were episodes that made me want to give this S2 a 10, but while those episodes earn themselves a 10, I still dont feel like the whole S2 deserves that since there were some real more slow, dull moments.
Really love the balance of heartharming scenes and drama/feels.
This is probably that one series that manage to strike such a balance of drama and SoL, while being amazing at both of them for the most part.

Hit me too, if you have had a dog in your life, you just cant pretend you didnt felt that... and Rei even hugged him very tighly, T_T

Hina looks amazing, S2 was serious about improving her character and making her a romantic plotline which IMO they suceeded in doing really well, since most Hina eps where really endearing or hard to watch on my korokoro.

9.4/10 = 9
Amazing sequel, a setup above S1 that really hits you hard and then softens it quite alot with alot of kawaii scenes going on.
(would love to see Kyouko making an appearence in S3 or further ahead in the manga)

my gosh this show is brilliant.. what a fantastic finish to yet another beginnings.

I know I blast Shaft a lot because of their tendency to add unrelated shtick to their show, but when they don't, their production value is pretty damn high.. there's very minimal shaft-ism in this season from what I've seen, and the show turned out to be amazing, there's barely any fluff and most of the stuffs that they added are relevant to the scenarios. There's still of course quite a bit of Shaft-ism that do not belong, but they're far few in between.

Honestly the whole season 1 + season 2 could've been a perfect 10 for me, if it wasn't for the unnecessarily dragged on character narrative that's been regurgitated million of times before, same message different delivery form. Season 2 switched things up more often, talk about different themes in almost every episode, where as in season 1, they were beating the dead horse on Rei's past, Shimada's purpose, etc. They did the same with the bully arc in season 2 as well which is why the arc almost lowered my opinion on the series.

Speaking of the bully arc, I don't really care about Takagi, yeah her talk with that guy teacher was pretty nice but she still pisses me off. If she changes her way, that's great, I'll welcome her back to the show as a well developed character, but if she doesn't, she can stay tf out of the show forever. I wasn't fond of the way Akari dealt with the case as well, she ended up being a non factor in the confrontation between 2 guardians and allowed the bully to have the higher ground. Hinata had to come out of the rabbit hole pretty much by herself then.. talk about being useless. I lost respect for her for a bit after that and couldn't enjoy her (fake cherry) scenes.. she's fine now though but seriously that arc left a bad taste in my mouth, great start to a poorly constructed arc.. respect to the mangaka for taking the bullying arc seriously with proper consideration though, but it's still a bad arc.

The game tag is rather confusing imo, this is not really about the game of shogi, but the life of said shogi player and people around him. I came into the show with a different expectation and wasn't able to enjoy the series to the fullest. By the end though the slice of life scenes are what I look forward to the most, especially ever since we got some development for/between Hina and Rei, and that's a great thing. The home visit in this episode is so nice, even though the mom knows that Rei did nothing wrong, she still couldn't come to fully accept him because of her children.. hopefully before the end of this series we get a conclusion to Rei's family drama, the parents deserve that as well as Rei.

there's nothing left to say really, amazing series that I would not mind having more of. It's flawed here and there for sure but the message the mangaka wanted to convey has reached most of our heart. Truly beautiful.

Man, I should've watched this much more earlier. Regretting it. But, better late than never.

If I have to sum up the S1 to S2, 3-gatsu no Lion is really an essence of being human. I witnessed Kiriyama from being bland (imo) to an interesting character. The way the story unravels is at a good pace. The challenges of being alone and being relyed upon is quite explored here. Even though he's still 18, he still has a long way to go.

Keeping in a relationship with the Kawamoto family has changed Kiriyama a lot. I liked how they faced the hardships from Akari taking over as a mother for her siblings. The responsibility that her mother passed on to, it is really tough. But, Akari did not fail her duties as a surrogate mother. Promise fulfilled. Hina being able to stand up for what is right. It takes courage to be brave, especially that there's always a price to pay. In the end, it pulled off. (Proof card then drops reverse card*)

We also witnessed Yanagihara's feelings and thoughts in that certain tournament. Just like Shimada in S1, Yanagihara would not be able to succeed without the help of his fellow colleagues and shogi players who gave up their dreams but passed on the strength to Yanagihara. That is why he's still fighting until the end.

Overall, 3-gatsu no Lion is an enjoyable SoL anime. This is one of the SoL animes that portrayed the reality of life well. Can relate to it.

Season 3 when?

The first season of this anime was a recommendation made to me by one of the viewers of my video reviews, over on Youtube... They'd promised a highly investing, emotional story. And, truth be told, I didn't really feel like the first season lived up to that. In fact, I only very mildly enjoyed it. So, when season 2 was announced, I legitimately debated whether or not I was going to 'bother' watching it. But, on a slow day, I caved. And I couldn't be happier that I did. Because the second season, all told, was leaps and bounds more investing. It got legitimately emotional, and brought me to tears on occasion. It fueled my rage, as well as sympathies, for Hina's in-school predicament. And it humanized Kiriyama that much more, for his being there for her. One of the best episodes, I feel, was with the old man shogi player, toward the latter half of the season. (Episode 18). The episode, and that voice actor's performance, was a tour de force. And it singularly made me give a crap about shogi -- which I have largely had no interest in. Suffice to say, season 2 was amazing. Fingers are well and truly crossed for a third.

Yeah my experience was similar. I thought the first season was good not great but this season was absolutely amazing, better than all of my 7s.

Not only was this one of the most incredible conclusions to a show I have ever seen (so conclusive that it doesn't need a sequel, but it BETTER FUCKING GET ONE), but this was also one of the best shows I have ever seen in my entire life in every single different medium imaginable. While not entirely unique, March Comes in Like a Lion is the epitome of how a drama slice of life anime should play out. This second season was one of the most flawless pieces of work I have ever seen. I don't even know why I am such a fanboy for this show. I'm sure if I nitpicked, I could come up with flaws, but this show resonates with me on a profound level, unlike anything I have ever experienced before. I'll further discuss my thoughts on this show after the episode discussion, but spoiler alert, I gave this a 10/10. If that's all you're here for, arrivederci.

I'm assuming because we didn't get a chapter number this beginning was anime original? It was still great though. It delved into the psychological mindset of those surrounding Rei while he lived at his "fake" family's household (the Kawamoto's are his real family, fucking fight me). Kyouko and Ayumu deserve to be lazy trashbags after the way they treated Rei. As angry as I should be at the mother for abusing Rei just as they did, at least she shows remorse. That's all that Rei needs. I would also like to point out how beautiful the "animation" is, despite it basically being a slideshow. The cello playing was gorgeous. This is the last time I will hear this OP. Don't do this to me. Congratulations Rei on your promotion! I love that this is how Hina found out. Rei is proving to be an inspiration for others. I bet at the start of this show he could have never imagined that being something that would happen. When did Takahashi get so good at this? "It suddenly felt like I was going to cry." I know, Hina. That code seems overly complicated, Someji. She's just cutting her hair. Is it that big of a deal? I'm pretty sure Akari is overreacting. It looks pretty bad, lol. Becoming a NEET is an interesting solution to your problem, Hina. I think the hairstyle looks great when it isn't in that comic-y humorous animation style. Rei's reaction was perfect. Akari and Momo humming to the tune of the preview song was a brilliant way to conclude this episode. Masterclass quality.

I'm sure it goes without saying that I am a fan of this show, as the first and second paragraphs abundantly made clear. But why, exactly? Looking at the first and second seasons as a whole, there are many reasons. The animation and sound design are top notch, and among the best, I've seen in a slice of life. Animation quality is both subjective and objective in that it can be objectively stated that works like Mob Psycho 100 or the original One Punch Man pushed the boundaries of what animation is as an art form, but I also believe that when looking at anime as an art, as a painting, it gets more subjective. I personally found 3-gatsu no Lion's art style to be gorgeous, and the soundtrack fits so well it was marvelous. What about characters? Well, there aren't any bad ones, so I don't have any complaints there. I would have said 15 episodes ago that Megumi Takagi was a bad character, but even she got some good development. The standout of the show was, of course, Rei. Not to say that Shimada, any of the Kawamotos (minus Momo, who is mainly just comic relief and is probably the weakest character of the show that actually gets screentime development wise), or the rest of the shogi gang aren't good characters. Because they are good characters. They are brilliant characters. But something about seeing someone like Rei undergo similar events and similar phases to what I had to go through when I was his age strikes such a chord with my heart I'm not even sure I can put it down into words. We literally get to see Rei grow through these 44 episodes, and he grows wonderfully. The story was just as excellent as the other aspects. My biggest complaint from the first season was that it almost felt like an episodic show and as a result the story sometimes felt lacking. But those days are gone! Here, we got a genuine almost full cour arc that had a satisfying and realistic conclusion. And obviously, my enjoyment was top notch. So to conclude, this show is (in my opinion, of course) a bona fide masterpiece, and deserves its high rating on MAL every single bit. I WILL be revisiting this show, I WILL be recommending it to every single person even remotely interested in anime as a medium for storytelling, and I WILL never forget this show. 10/10, goodnight.

LOOOOOOL when Momo took out the doll, I fkn died ! That was hilarious
The haircut actually looks pretty good at the end scene with Rei....

As for this season, definitely a step up from the last
Really liked how much they focused on Hinata , she has officially become one of my favourite characters in general. Sasuga Kanahana !!

My only contentions were that they couldn’t fully resolve the Takagi issue, I was hoping there would be more of a satisfying close to that.
Also, I really wanted more story on Kyouko for the second season but she pretty much got Shaft’d(hehe) in favour of Hina, which worked out but I still wished there was more screen time for her.

All in all really great , 8/10

I love the ending scene haha Rei complimenting Hina is so genuine! Hina is so pretty!!

Hina!! You will never find a guy like him!!! I love Rei!! I want to have Rei!!! Wahhhh

Beautiful.

That's the only way I can describe this anime, especially this season.

And this is a big word for me, because I don't think I've ever called any anime beautiful.

Is this the best anime I've seen so far?
Well no, it's one of the best, but not the one for me, there are others that has left a bigger impact on me, and enjoyed more.

Is this the most beautiful anime I've seen so far?
Yes, without a doubt. I've enjoyed every single episode of this season, and this last episode was just so sad to watch, I started tearing up multiple times, because it has ended.

This is the type of anime I could watch forever. I've finished the anime in just two days. I haven't watched this much in such a short time for at least half a year now. It's been a long time since I wanted to watch the next episode of any anime as much as that of 3-gatsu no Lion.

And I didn't think it would happen in the beginning, but I really, and I mean really enjoyed all the Shogi games. They were so amazingly executed, that I just couldn't help but feel amazed by how they were done. They turned a slow, quiet and honestly (for me) a boring game into an extremely enjoyable one.

And I got really attached to the characters too, especially Hina. She's my favorite in the anime, I really like her, and she made it into my favorite list ♥
It was really sad to see her so sad in the first half of the season, I wanted to see her smile again so bad.
I also liked the back story of all the (side) characters too.

The soundtrack of the anime was also phenomenal. Simply beautiful. Some of them reminded me of Ore Monogatari's OSTs.
I seriously loved everything in this anime. It's a real masterpiece.

Honestly, for quite a long time I had this anime in my PTW list, but I've always avoided it for some reason, I don't really know why, but now I regret I haven't watched it sooner.
3-gatsu no lion deserves a spot in my favorites.

I think it goes without saying, but 10/10.

I've finished it awhile ago, all I want to say here:
A fucking masterpiece, everything about it. I love 3-gatsu.
I'm never watching a cliche slice-of-life, only people being people only with emphasized emotion.
God bless this anime.

Same as above, have watched this masterpiece numerous times and every time it still hits like a fucking truck. I would love to watch this show once again in the future and love to relish the moments, it is a timeless masterpiece for me.
God bless this anime.

lol it was really funny when Rei kept saying he liked Hina's hair.
I really enjoyed watching this season (and the last season) and as someone said above I would also call this show beautiful. I was either smiling or in tears whenever I was watching it. I'm also glad I started watching this even if at the beginning (the first season) I thought it was going to be boring. I can see why this show is ranked so high! I really hope they make a season 3 because I would love to continue to follow everyone on their journey and I would also love to continue to see Rei's growth. I think this has become one of my favorites animes :) 10/10!
