I think one of the most intriguing aspects of the show is the Abyss itself. How is it possible that each layer and its denizens are so very different? How come there are so many relics lying around?

We know that the relics on the surface are basically rubbish while they are becoming more interesting and complex the deeper one travels (i.e. Reg). Certain elements remind me of the first book of the Divina Comedia by Dante - Inferno. The circles coincide with the layers. Also, the layers are becoming more and more hellish the deeper one travels. For Dante and Virgil, things started to get progressively worse from the second circle (Lust) onwards.

On the whole, though, I cannot get rid of the feeling that the Abyss used to be a spaceship (maybe something like an Ark) that crashed many thousand years ago and Riko and Reg are travelling to its heart. Why? The layers could be different decks on an ark. All of the animals could be survivors of some cataclysmic event and robots like Reg take care of the inner workings of the ship.

What do you think? Are Riko and Reg simply like Dante and Virgil on a one way trip though hell or is it something else?

So far in the manga, I'm still clueless on what on earth the abyss really is or was, but yeah as they get deeper in the abyss, shit gets worse. You can't predict what the deeper level is gonna be because of how complex it is. Props to the mangaka for scaring the shit outta me every time there's a new chapter.

And yeah it somehow reminded me of Dante Alighieri's work.

"Maybe he's trying to take a shit, but the shit just won't come out."

As much as the idea of the abyss being a spaceship is a cool one, i don't think it makes sense. This theory is invalidated by two things: the curse of the abyss, and the ship on layer 3. Why would the force field even be a thing on an ark, and how in the world did the ship get there?

I have two theories about the abyss: it's an artificial creation that reforms itself and creates a new layer every 2,000 years (i.e the skeletons on layer 1 are 2,000 years old, the windmills at the beginning of layer 2 are 4,000 and i may recall that something in layer 3 is 6,000, maybe the ship but im not sure).
Or it's a giant lovecraft-like creature that swallows everything that's on the surface every 2,000 years and traps people in it using the force field and the curse making them weaker and weaker to force them to stay (birthday disease)
Note that both of those theories can somewhat come together. And as for why there are those weird, magic relics, maybe some of the previous civilizations that lived in the abyss managed to master some of its properties that we don't know yet to craft cool items.

I actually like the idea of the layer renewing itself every 2000 years. It might explain also why there are ships (!) buried in the walls as seen in the great Vault which was just weird and yes also the masses of dead burried above and all in prayer positions. Maybe those people knew that their world is coming to an end a´so they all lay down to pray and hope for the end not to come. Regarding the forcefield. This is actually one of the reasons why I thought of a ship because I associate forefields with ships and space stations though I have to admit that the forcefield is behaving rather oddly. Instead of surrounding the Abyss it seems to permeate/radiate and also weaken in some areas.

Still no answers in the manga, the only thing we know that it might be a giant creature (by looking the design of the map) and that a new layer is formed each 2,000 years, meaning that Orth is in danger

It could be that the settlement on top becomes a layer when it resets. Therefore making relics into the newest layer.

With the 45 chapters of manga now currently ... and with the releasing pace of future chapters, my kids will one day tell me what exactly the abyss is.

The one thing that is weird though is why the relics in the most top layer are basically junk. If it is indeed the newest layer than the stuff should still function but everything the children find is broken junk. Why do the relics become more complex and also more dangerous the deeper you get? That cuboid that can bring back the dead was from the fourth layer and Reg...maybe seventh? Why are the things from the lowest level not only work but also seem to be technically much more advanced? Is the society upstairs regressing?

I do hope we will get an answer with the second season . When is it going to be released again? 2019?

I'm excited to learn about these things. The mystery is a big part of why I love this show and manga so much. It's a total mind fuck

The abyss probably contains some cute Neko girls
I really want to read the manga, however, suffering from 2 manga hiatus is already enough for me XP

The manga isn't very far yet compared to the anime, so you might as well wait until season 2 :P

In other words - the release pace is glacial :sigh: That sucks. I just hope that the second season will have a satisfying ending. Just started with Yona and I already know that it has no decent ending (at least the anime hasn't) and chances are slim for a second season.

Okay I didn't read the other comments, because I don't want to spoiler myself, but I saw the Abyss with its layers etc. just as a metaphor for the human soul in general. Things became worse and darker in the deep layers yet more complex and valuable. I dunno, I really just liked the idea. ^^

All of you saying that the abyss is this deep spiritual thing, Dante's Inferno yadda, yadda, yadda. Nope fam, by the end of the show, or somewhere between the start of S3 and the end, we'll find out that the abyss is nothing more than a ancient civilization (a.k.a us) garbage dump.
