----------------------------------------
I had mentioned a few criticisms I had with this arc in the past in the way of some game contrivances. Those being the fact that Kazuya implied it was the case that once you use a red life, then it's in the game. The late implication of the double hold call button and how it didn't play with that idea until it came out of nowhere, although this could be a translation issue. The last being the fact that the button is designed to only save someone once with the excuse that he wouldn't need to program it to work more than once. This goes against all common sense, it would be harder to program it to only work once rather than to allow it to cancel as many times as one wants. That and the way you activate cancellation, by holding it down it leaves room for someone who lost and doesn't have the resolve to release the button to be saved by luck. I think it would be better if it was a maneuver such as tapping it 5 times back to back or something.

The reason I bring these up is because my issue of forcing Kazuya to use a red life doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. As we saw he only let it go on because he thought he had the free cancellation so he'd live anyway, and once he realized that wasn't the case he even tried to refute Kaiji by saying exactly what I did. But Mother Sophie is mechanical and cruel, I'm sure there isn't a part of it that would register that someone has taken the red life out and accepted it into play, nor would Kazuya think that he would be forced to in a state he couldn't cancel the drop. Because of that this is solved, this is no longer and issue and makes perfect sense apart from the fact that it's connected to the contrived 'one time use' writing device. That said the way the button is used, and the way the double hold call function was introduced are nitpicks and don't ruin the overall story, whereas the other if not fixed would have taken away much more. Now the major contrivances are minor even if interconnected, they're certainly excusable but the story would be better if the cancellation button was removed in a better way than 'but I can only use it once'.
