I want to ask the long time fans of this series, as I'm new to the Cardcaptor Sakura. I'm not very used to magical girl anime but I now want to consider giving this a try at least something vanilla,(I've seen the new magical girl series before, those ones had dark themes and I didn't like it.) So I ask, if it is fine to watch the new sequel without watching the previous ones and if I might miss out some major plot points.

Maybe you can just put a spoiler tag and give me everything I need to know before watching this. Thank you. I hope for a reply soon.

How can you even think to do that? The prequel have 70 episodes TV anime and couples of movies.

It's not recommended because card captor sakura has a pretty good plot, but I don't think it is a totally Must. I myself don't remember much about the plot because I watched it 15 years ago. You were 5 at that time, haha.

This is literally me. Jeez. And I ain't planning to rewatch the prequel or read the manga just for the sake of remembering what happened in the past. Haha. So far, I have no problems with watching Clear Card with my schema. Hahaha. Help me, 5-year-old me.

The fact people even do these kind of questions just baffles me.
If it is a sequel and the story is progressing from the prequel, of course it is more than reccomended watch it.

I cannot even these kind of threads. Of course it is not. If you are unable to spend time on the prequel, just don't watch it. You simply won't enjoy it.

There are a lot of character developments and emotional moments in the prequels, and a captivating story which are why this anime is loved and considered one of the greatest anime of all time.

Simple answer: No. You won't understand anything that's going on.

I'm fairly certain it was made clear on announcement that it was a sequel. I'm new to the show, so i binged it all before starting clear card. was definitely worthwhile

wtf are you all talking about? there is barely any references to the previous plot, at least in these first 5 episodes, but I doubt they'll go back to any events in any future episodes anyway since everything was pretty much wrapped up. the only problem you'll have watching this without watching the prequel is that you won't know who the characters are. All you need to do to watch this is read who the characters are on the wiki when you see them pop up just so you know how the fit in the plot. you don't even have to give a crap about the original cards since they probably won't be used even if they are restored in the end. i defenitly don't think watching the previos season will affect your enjoyment

Some shows are continuations of a previous plot, others are basically unrelated. It's hard to tell which is which, sometimes. For example, you can watch all of the Yu-Gi-Oh seasons without having seen the previous ones. Most of the Ghost in the Shell series are unrelated as well. An outsider won't know if this is a reboot, a continuation, side story, or what.

I strongly disagree with most people above. Yes, you will miss some things here and there, but this is a new story that doesn't have like really strong connection to previous 70 episodes. You will certainly be able to understand what is going on and enjoy the story, if you are into this kind of shows.

No. It's a direct sequel, of course you have to understand the previous source material. Just because these first 5 episodes don't reference the previous seasons, doesn't mean it won't into the future. CCS is a character-driven story, so without knowing anything about them, you'd literally be taking out all of the enjoyment of the show. All that'd be left is... what, pretty modern animation?

I agree with the people who say to read the manga, it'd be faster.

Most of what they'll be missing is the dynamics between the established characters. For example, Syaoran's and Sakura's relationship at the start of the first series is dramatically different from how they are in Clear Card. If you just start from the sequel you lose out on a lot of the character development, especially when it comes to characters like Eriol.

Anyway back to the question,
If you have time to watch the original anime, watch it! It's cute, charming, and fairly lighthearted. The manga is also really good (and shorter than the anime if you're pressed on time) and sheds light on a few characters the anime neglects (Sakura's father for one).

tbh you don't even need to watch the new series, just watch the original show, its way better.
