The opening was storyboarded by the director who storyboarded Mob Psycho 100's opening. This makes so much sense now.

Pretty good episode, OP and ED were on point and animation was great its just that... it wasn't that great.
I dont know, maybe i had a high expectation or maybe that robotic sci fi kind of grossed me out.
Hope it get more interesting later on, for now it just a weak 7/10

I don't know if I'm a huge fan of the animation style, but it's not so bad that it's unwatchable. Even when there are issues, it makes quick work of them and distracts you with other things, so it was done well, at least. Both the scenes with the aliens(?) and the slow motion hero scene were really great too. Slow motion in anime gives the goods.

Also, gave me a justice boner. Wurf it.

That's a weird episode. The first half managed to pull my heartstrings, but it's pretty messy. And the tone was what made it especially weird. It's sad yet unintentionally hilarious at the same time. Even the OP had the exact same tonal clash. It's definitely a directing problem. In short, the overall direction of the first episode was not good.

I already feel sorry for Inuyashiki; his family treat him like crap. They constantly disrespect and ignore him; he couldn't even tell him about his cancer prognosis. He even believed that they wouldn't cry if he died.

The animation was pretty good, the CGI is being handled properly for once!

That part was definitely sad. Fast paced yet effective. Unfortunate that after we're introduced to the cyborg thing everything became hilarious.

The CGI definitely one of the best I have seen in an anime TV series. It looked so similar to the hand drawn counterpart. But it's not handled that well. It's weird how the characters constantly changing from CGI to hand drawn without any reason. Honestly, it would've been better if this anime made entirely/mostly with CGI.

The MC (Inuyashiki) is already one of my fav's cause he represents my grandpa so well, I'm like that dog to him which Inuyashiki has ^_^

Lol,good to know I wasn't the only one shedding tears XD (Which already happened like after the first 5 minutes of the anime, wow). And yes,I also think it's refreshing to have an old man as the main character, heh.
Inuyashiki started out great and has a lot of potential,I really hope the quality won't just drastically drop in the next episode. Never read the manga,so didn't really know what to expect, but I like the show this far.

If anyone's wondering why Inuyashiki hit his phone with a hammer, allow me to explain. You see, his Nokia wasn't working correctly. In the rare event of this situation it is common practice to strike the phone with a hammer to realign the internal components.

Problem is, this only works on true Nokias, since they are indestructible and hitting it with a hammer therefore cannot cause any negative effects - only positive ones. This explains why he was so confused that it broke. The truth of the matter is Nokia's tech is so advanced that not even aliens are capable of replicating it.

Thoroughly impressed with this one. CG was a little bit crazy at times, especially because it was so slight and mixed with 2D. I'm used to Polygon Pictures style CG.
The story is really awesome, and honestly this is the best pilot I've seen this season

Pretty good first episode to start proceedings for this show!

Didn't expect to see an old senile man as the main character but it's a good change, I have to say. Seeing all those heartless expressions and actions from the family and those bastard teens though was indeed seriously depressing and an eyesore to watch. I almost tore up right there. But, seeing that turn around climax in the end with the machine activating was a priceless scene followed by the broadcasting of the culprits. Serves you right, heartless teens! On another note, the CGI Animation was something that was seriously bugging me throughout the episode and I know it was minimal but still couldn't get over it. I hope the quality doesn't deteriorate from here and I'll be wishing there will be slight improvements from next week onwards. I wonder what really is that mysterious machine and the transformation of the main character is though and what relation does it have to the outside world, maybe? It did have an odd language moreover, so who knows. Guess the other two characters shown in the preview will appear soon enough in the next episode or within a couple more and I'm guessing they are either similar to the old man or something like messengers of delivering this power or something along those lines. Let's just wait and see what transpires in the end.

Overall, a solid start and I'll watch the series for sure. For now, I'll stick with a 7.5/10.

Probably my aots right here, always meant to read the manga ever since Gigguk did a promotional video for bookwalker (or something else) on some good manga to read and he mentioned inuyashiki.

Opening was super strong for me, definitely won't be skipping it on any episode, and the ending was a good listen too.

Soo satisfying watching those kids get exposed to everyone through the video and then getting their ID's exposed, honestly they were such little shits. Hopefully next week we get to see inuyashiki explore more of his new abilities.

Also I predict there's gonna be a lot of wtf moments that are gonna be turned into gifs which will be pretty funny, like the scene where he first 'unlocks' his head and his only words are "oh dear.."

What is with MAPPA, recently adapting series from manga I liked? First it was Kakegurui and now it's this? This looks fantastic and even though CGI was a bit strange in a few areas, this still blew my expectations so far. Plus I love the opening and ending for this. I hope this will also mostly go well. :D

Not too shabby an adaptation so far. I hope they go anime original at the end though since the manga ending was meh at best.

I don't know if I would want that. Even though the manga's was... lol, I don't really trust MAPPA with anime originals after recently going through Kakegurui's last season, which was very disappointing to me, so I doubt it'd be any better for me.

This was definitely what I would describe as an odd opening episode, but it was definitely an extremely interesting one as well, even if his family being assholes to him felt extremely arbitrary, not to mention those random psycho teenagers trying to kill the homeless man. Still, this looks like it's going to be a very entertaining show, if nothing else.

Having Elfen Lied flashbacks.. not necessary because of the setting but for how unbelievable and exaggerated the characters seem to act...

Apart from that i have to agree the CGI was awful and everything progressed at an unnecessary fast paced. Hopefully it gets better in episode 2.

The production level is just incredible, it may be one of the best animated series this season.

Genuinely hoping that they fixed the ending and tweaked the plot because this series really does start off strong. I really don't want to see all this praise go to waste should they adapt 100%of that retarded manga (the writer literally went insane and fucked everything up)

That's one of the most visually stunning OPs I've ever seen. This was a crazy first episode. It managed to get me to care about this old man that had no one who cared about him in just 10 minutes.

I think those kids were a little too evil. The kind of over the top evil that's just there for plot convenience. I was disappointed when he didn't kill them but it then went in the other direction and made it some of the juiciest justice porn. I'm not sure what this show's going to be about but I'm hooked.

Idk how to feel about this first episode. I really feel bad for that father. Omg. His whole family doesn't seem to care for him. When he was crying while hugging that dog. Ohmygod my feels. ;-; He was dying and he can't even tell it to his family because they're all piece of shit. Ffs. Glad that inu is with him. Awww. ;-;

Then some alien transformed him into a cyborg when they 'accidentally' killed him. Lmao. I wonder what happened to that other guy. Glad the dog wasn't hurt. Yaaay. Hahaha. It cured his illness. Holy crap. So happy for the old man. <3

Jeez. This is why I can't stand human beings. Those group of teenagers making fun of that old man who's finally redeeming himself to his ex-wife or girlfriend, I guess. Yaaaay! Ichirou saved the man. Aww. You're a hero, maaan. :)

I really liked this episode. The CGI kinda bothered me since this is MAPPA we're talking about, so it kinda surprised me. Haha.

This show's already an 8/10 for me.

P.S. That OP, though. Daaaaaaaaaamn!

being old and getting ignored even by his own family
plus stomach cancer?
that old man doesn't deserve that at all
kinda irritated with his family behaviour

but the second part absolutely crazy
cyborg? alien?
whatever it is, its making this series different than the other

and from 1st episode at least we know

As a manga reader this was the most hyped anime I had this season, and it didn't disappoint. I agree, the CGI takes some getting used to, the VAs are a bit iffy, but that OP, wow. I can't stop watching it.
EDIT: Oh and, for those wandering what that blue ball and red ball mean, from iNUyaSHIki, the red ball, (japanese character for NU) represents the MC and the blue ball, (japanese character for SHI) represents... someone else. In the end they come together to form the word 'Shinu' meaning 'To die'...

Possible spoiler below.

All in all, it's pretty good for an obviously cheap production, and for that, I eagerly await more.

The first half was so depressing. And the second half was really weird. A random alien spaceship swoops down and turns Inuyashiki into a superhero cyborg? It's funny in an absurdist way. A crazy change needed to happen to give that guy a new lease on life. He seemed to deserve better; his family is terrible. And what was up with the thugs at the end? What kind of kids randomly try to kill people like that? I'm not sure how I feel about this show yet, but I'm going to keep watching. It's definitely not your typical cookie cutter anime.

That was great!

At first I was put off by the 3D animation, but the strained family dynamic and quiet older protagonist kept me interested. And then it got really sad! So sad! I did have emotional investment, but obviously it was too early in the story to make me cry. Still, that was impressive.

And then it happened! The awesome sci-fi only-in-anime part when some aliens are like "let's make this old guy an incredibly powerful cyborg". Boy that was awesome! It's still unexplained, but that's fine since it's the first episode.

And we had a satisfying "revenge against awful thugs" part which is always cool to see. It served well as something to give Inuyashiki hope again. Plus, his cancer is gone. So that's neat.

Definitely looking forward to see where this goes!

Also, the OP was AWESOME. I had high expectations since it's studio Mappa and a MAN WITH A MISSION song, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The ED was very nice and beautiful too.

People need to realize that not everything will work in 2D.

This is certainly true. This is one type of anime that would have been a sure miss if it were made in 2D only. While many of us are loathe to accept 3D CGI, we do need to realize that by adding 3D to their bag of tricks, animators have made it possible to create new types of anime that they couldn't with only 2D tools. It would be too time intensive and costly to animate something like Iyuyashiki's exploded-view arm spewing across the wall in 2D -- either that, or the level of detail would have been significantly reduced.

Once they add 3D into the arsenal, though, it becomes a bit too easy for decision-makers to say "Oh, you're running behind on animating that cut with Hanako? We'll just pass it off to 3D instead." I think what it comes down to is not whether to use 3D, but when, and that's up to the director, AD, and production staff. When they turn to 3D as a way to save money or catch up lost time, it shows and the series suffers for it. When a scene calls for 3D because it's the better way to animate it, then it's appropriate to use it, and I and probably most anime fans don't have much of a problem with it.

I'm glad someone liked this as much as I did. Of the current season this was what I was looking to the most and I went into it as blind as possible. I was gripped on the opening alone, and dear god from the beginning to the end I was leaning into my screen.

The CG was a little awkward at times, but I feel like the use of CG is probably warranted in this series considering what they're going to end up doing with it... android battles and stuff... oh it's going to be intense.

Add an animal , especially the dog and everything becomes much more impactful. How we went from sad grandpa griefing about his life coming to an end into spaceship in one mere moment was suprising but hilarious at the same time.

He doesn't have a biological brain but rather some ball in the center of the head , but he's conscious of himself as human , has memories and emotions and not an AI.. Did aliens store his conciousness in that sphere ? And are there water pumps under his face that shed "tears" xd ?

Are those teenagers mentally ill ? Firing fireworks at a person and talking about killing as it's nothing , but then fearing that their lives are over..come on..

I assume there should be a purpose why old daddy was made into a cyborg. I hope this will be a complete and FAITHFUL adaptation so we'll get to know most of the things we are asking now.

Fell in liking Mari from the first moment :) <3
