I have a feeling like this could be a worthy successor to the "When They Cry" franchise if the story and mystery is consistent. The premise looks good so far. We got quite some characterization in this chapter, which will probably be used later on to create similar conflicts like in Umineko. The balance of mystery and fantasy is also an important aspect if this story wants to be a hit because too much fantasy would undermine the importance of the mystery. I'm worried about the protagonist being a bit too generic as well, so I hope that Ryukishi has a good plan for her. What's left is that the grandma says: "Oh desire!"

The pacing seems to be a lot faster this time around; the same amount of pages add up to Keiichi reading the newspaper in Higurashi and Battler witnessing the portrait of the witch in Umineko. So I'm guessing this will be a lot more dominantly horror with the mystery aspect on the backburner?

The twin suns seems something that can't really be explained away with other than supernatural, not sure what to think about it at this point.

EDIT: Right, or that ogre-thing at the beginning. Not sure how I missed that during my first read.

Wow, this was a great chapter. I can't wait for the 2nd chapter. I also heard that there is another When They Cry series that is directly related to the Higurashi themes. Its called Trianthology for whoever is curious.

does anyone how often do new chapters get released? Does this just not have an active translation team? (if anyone knows @ me please!)

Hotarubi Volume 1 and 2 have been released, but so far only the beginning of volume 1 has been translated. I have a feeling that we'll get more translations very soon.
