Last month Pied Piper, Inc. announced the license of the Skip Beat! anime, with plans to crowdfund an English-dubbed DVD and Blu-ray. Well, the time has come, and as of March the campaign is officially live, and it's seeking $210,000 to fund the dubbed home video release.

The lack of an English dub is the whole reason Skip Beat! hasn't had an official DVD release in North America. Pied Piper licensed the series from TV TOKYO with the guarantee of producing an English dub, and $210k is the minimum budget required to produce a solid DVD/Blu-ray release with a dub.

Here's more info on that aspect from the press release:

Pied Piper, Inc.’s president Ann Yamamoto explains, “It is unbearable to me that Skip Beat! has not had an official release. Thanks to my experience in crowdfunding the Time of EVE: The Movie international release, I am in a position to do something about it.” The Time of EVE: The Movie campaign on Kickstarter raised $215,433 to exceed the original goal by over 1,000%, and additional funds were used toward bonus material, English dub, soundtrack, official fan book and exclusive merchandise. Ann Yamamoto continues, “Crowdfunding is ideal for Skip Beat!, which has a passionate fan base but has remained unlicensed, in large part because shojo titles are seen as being challenging for an English dub, which can easily cost $200,000. I commend TV TOKYO for believing in Skip Beat! and requiring the English dub as a condition for the release, and I believe the fanbase in North America has the passion to make the release a success.”

The Skip Beat! Kickstarter campaign will run from March 1 through March 31.

I just came here to share the news, I really want to try my best to support the campaign because I really enjoy both the anime and the manga.

I want to encourage others, even if they don't personally enjoy dub to support the project to at least get a DVD and Blu Ray release to the United States.

The DVD will not just be English dubbed, it will have the Japanese dub on it as well.

I just wanted to add that this release will have both the English and Japanese dubs. From reading the campaign's page, it seems like a lot of people are under the impression it'll be English dub-only, which is not the case.

This needs more people pledging to it, I currently am finding myself depressed because it isn't getting money faster @_@

right now it's gonna miss the goal by about a 100k :(

I know what you mean :(
This campaign really needs the money, I'm trying to spread the word as much as I can, but its so hard with the lack of press this campaign is getting.

This response by Ann Yamamoto to a comment on the project's Indiegogo page about what would happen if the campaign didn't meet its funding goal by the date set might relieve some of your worry:

"If we don't have enough funds to deliver the rewards as promised by March 31, we will extend the campaign. This is my first time on Indiegogo, and I'm discovering that it has a different rhythm than Kickstarter, where you get a big burst at the beginning, and then try also for a big burst at the tail end. For this campaign, I think we are going to see a steady build up as we make casting announcements and reach out to the core Skip Beat fandom."

FWIW, the Indiegogo campaign was closed and this will now run on Kickstarter. Those who pledged at Indiegogo will be getting a refund.

@Rayla, is there a way to edit your OP to showcase the Kickstarter campaign info (I know you can easily edit regular posts, but I dunno if it's different for OPs)? Just a thought, since it's still all about the Indiegogo campaign, but with the link to the Kickstarter at the bottom of the post. Since Indiegogo was such a turn-off for so many people, who knows how many people look at this thread, see "Indiegogo," and just leave the page, rather than scrolling down to read more. It's just a thought I had that might hopefully get this thread (and the Kickstarter in turn) a little more attention and support.

Still really excited about this campaign and really hoping it gets funded!

Yeah, I'm going to go change the information now. Thanks again for the heads up, it looks like its going to be a success, I have to make sure I make my own donation, so I can get the exclusive goodies.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks!

I noticed there's still a lot of the old info in the post itself, such as the funding goal and the dates the campaign is running to and from, as well as the promo video itself being the one from the Indiegogo campaign. If you have the time, it might be worth it to update that info as well. :) I'd do it, but it's not possible for me to edit someone else's post like that, so...

EDIT (directed at anybody): Oops! I forgot to mention that the campaign will apparently be doing a push for $25 on the 25th. Essentially, the idea is to get as many people as possible to up their pledge amount by $25 on March 25th (doing so automatically nets you a swag set, which is the reward for the $25 pledge tier). There's been some talk of having a special reward for backers who do this, but I haven't seen anything concrete yet. If we do this, it would add a nice boost to the funding at a pretty small cost per person.

Since it hasn't been mentioned here yet, the Skip Beat! Kickstarter campaign is fully funded at $155,000! :D The physical sets are currently DVD-only, but when (yes--"when," not "if") we reach $185,000, the $100 and $150 DVD sets will be upgraded to Blu-ray/DVD combo sets.

There are also several English dub VA announcements that haven't been mentioned here, so I'll just run through them all in one place:

Kanae Kotonami will be voiced by Erica Lindbeck
Shou Fuwa will be voiced by Grant George
Ren Tsuruga will be voiced by Robbie Daymond
Yukihito Yashiro will be voiced by Vic Mignogna
Lory Takarada will be voiced by Richard Epcar
Maria Takarada will be voiced by Mela Lee
Erika Koenji will be voiced by Cristina Vee
Kyouko Mogami will be voiced by Caitlin Glass

Mela Lee and Cristina Vee are also producing the dub, and Cristina Vee is also in charge of casting.

No worries! Non-financial support is just as important as directly donating money.

Update: The campaign passed the Blu-ray stretch goal! So, the sets at the $100 tier and above will be upgraded to Blu-ray/DVD combo sets. There are currently other stretch goals being discussed, mainly regarding on-disc extras, such as bloopers, commentaries, making-of videos and marathon mode. For those who don't know, marathon mode lets you play all the episodes on a disc back to back, without the OP/ED and next-episode preview in between episodes.

I just found out about this the other day when I went to see if I recognized one of the Japanese Voice Actors while rewatching the series and I am so excited about this coming out. The English cast looks really good so far. I am low on money as well and already own the DVD with just the Japanese Audio and English Subtitles but I might have to buy this as well at some point. First I will probably try to get my library to get some copies until I feel I can justify buying another copy of the anime.

I just skip beat in English Dub. God! it's freaking awesome . I loved the ending .
It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.
