I rented this movie, sat down to watch it, got through an hour and a half, and couldn't sit through the last half of the movie. I felt like it dragged on really slowly and was boring. I'll have to watch this another time when I feel more enthusiastic about watching it, because so many people say how amazing this movie is, so I'm wondering "Did I miss something?"

The movie opened in Singapore on Nov 27, and I watched it twice, on Nov 28 and 29 respectively.

On first impression, I found it to be another Mamoru Oshii movie courtesy of Production I.G, ie, a tediously boring experience.

But that impression changed during my second viewing. I suppose this is one of those films that gets better with repeated watching, as you'd realise what to look out for after finding out how it ends.

Also, watching it more than once helps to reinforce the movie's central theme. Try it, and you'd see what I mean.

And, oh yeah, for those of you who haven't watched the movie, remember to stay for the epilogue that comes after the credits - it'll give much-needed closure to the film. ;)

I'm still perplexed by the end of the movie.
This is the biggest change from the original story. There must be a significant reason for this.

My answer, which is more or less the same as yours:

More importantly, I wondered if anyone else noticed?

I guess I can appreciate this movie more than I did the first time I saw it because of the message it sends. Great story and very deep meanings indeed.

However, one question has been bugging me for a long time: if the point is to live on in order to break the cycle, would it have been better to start this break during the last battle...

I don't know what you think, but I think it would have been a good way to pave the path for Suito to follow through and break that cycle for good after a real fresh start with a huge obstacle out.

^ The Teacher may be replaced by a pilot as good as him. This is a staged war after all, everything is calculated to perfection, if one thing "breaks down"/dies it just gets replaced, like Kannami in the epilogue.

And if the Teacher got replaced, nothing would be accomplished, no broken cycle.

This was trying to be very clever but it fell somewhat flat because the movie is only portraying one small part of a much larger story. (As far as I could tell... or at least, that was the sense that I got.)

"I have to kill my father!" -- What the fuck? That came out of nowhere. So Teacher is Kannami's father? Really? Sure, whatever.

I had thought that Teacher may have been the father of Suito's kid but now I'm wondering if Kannami was the father. I can't remember if it was Kannami's previous incarnation or Teacher in the flashback where Suito is sleeping with someone at the whorehouse.

I liked it, but I was very confused at the end because of all the unanswered questions and what I suspect was an awful translation (I watched it dubbed). And I agree with everyone that it was really well animated and nice to look at. 5/10, maybe a 6 if I let it sink in or rewatch.

10/10. Great. The pace is slow, however this is deliberate.
It gives you time think and to develop feelings.
"Father" - is also biblical allusion to the one of Creators (just like in Blade Runner movie).

Not too big on slow pacing.

Not too big on some sort of endless loop (blame Endless Eight for that.)

But a sucker for beautiful scenery and environment in nearly every frame.

And a sucker for air battles.

7/10.

PS: Being an adaptation as it is, it seems like it was something where I had to at least know something about the original to, I guess, become engaged with the plot and the characters. But the slow pacing and later this theme of some sort of endless loop kept me from any significant amount of enjoyment.

PSS: The degree of indifference in this movie made me feel indifferent in this post.

PSSS: WHY IS THERE SO MUCH SMOKING IN THIS MOVIE.

I really liked the movie. Great movie for the past 6 months that I've watched. Liked the soundtrack and the ending theme of course. I'll definitely recommend this to my friends as we love mind working movies such as Inception, etc. But I do think the pacing is slow, but it kinda feels alright to just relax with it. :)

Well, it was interesting to watch, and I'm glad I watched it... But don't plan on ever watching it again. It was sooooooo long and boring, not going to lie. The concepts are great though, so I appreciate it for that much at least.
A very artsy film, and those are difficult to watch sometimes. Perhaps I needed to be in the right mood for it.

Also, Smoking Crawlers is a more apt name for this film. Or Staring into Space Crawlers.
Or Not Responding to Important Questions Crawlers.
I kid, I kid.

But here's a face representing every second scene of the film; each face is ten seconds long:
._.
._.
._. (doesn't respond to something important-sounding someone said)
._.
._.
._._ (cigarette in mouth)
._._
._._
._. (drops cigarette)
._.
._.
._.

And I guess that was the point, now that I think about. Perhaps all of us are living rather meaningless lives. We can't really change anything, but what side of the road we're walking on. Very Daoist feeling to it all, perhaps?

One would have to take another look and realize the characters who are NOT Killdren had facial expressions.

It was the Killdren who didn't show any expression. Which sort of fit into the whole theme.

I supposed all who post here already watched the movie. I finished watching it just now and just thought of putting something in here about the movie.

So if we put it on our perspective, the Kildrens where like clones with planted memories and such, only made to fight through air combat. Immortals that only dies when they get shot down. They probably for example 1 type of kildren got about 10+ more or even 100 or a 1000 more like him in ROSTOCK's Squadron but with just a different name and different in some body/face characteristics.

For example Kudagawa when he got shot down later on a new member joined there squadron, Totally different name but with the same hair color, as well as an OCD type of thing like what he does after reading a newspaper (folding it neatly) . The same cycle probably happened throughout the story maybe? As at the end Kannami died (which kind of made me feel horrible :/) Again a new member joined their squadron, but totally the same characteristic's like Kannami e.g. breaking the match sticks into half and throwing it away after lighting up a cigarrette.

In my opinion i think that was a great Movie. I would've loved to see how the war started and ended, but i guess it won't end as Kusanagi said in a game there's always a strong opponent and it would be an eternal game unless if that strong opponent is defeated.

This was probably the worst character design that I've ever seen in an anime! However, the aerial scenes more than made up for it.

I wish I could say that I loved this movie, but no. It actually left me with more questions than answers and was lacking key elements to me. The viewer doesn't get to see inside of the organization that created these "Killdren." I would love to have seen how they are created and reincarnated.

I also would have liked to learn more about "Teacher." Was he the creator of the "Killdren"? And, was this even a real war that they were fighting or just pure entertainment for the adults?

Yes. I had a word "Sansara" popping up in relation to this film, but not in any religious sense. The concept fits close to experience. Some kind of false infinity that has no good device, a game that plays it's participants, or maybe real players are not shown to us. This is all like life on Earth if you look throught excitement of a moment and isolated scenarios, that give illusion of movement. What realy moves though, is one's lifeblood streaming in the sand or stirring of a boiling pot, from which a being cannot escape. Anything can be had here by, except freedom. So, you realise this and despair (Kusanagi) but death can only give you a memory wipe. And if someone comes who could end this, he may need your help, your awareness of the situation. I'm glad that Osii doesn't lie here about a saviour of some kind, but rather honestly proposes a use of a chance that may come if you hold on and don't forget yourself and the truth you (Kusanagi) know. I don't know what it is and what may the change be, but it seems that Suito has something to try next time, there is more to her in Epilogue.

I can't say I enjoyed the movie, but I certainly liked it and I'm glad Oshii makes a meaningfull work once again.

The story was pretty damn interesting and the deep meaning this had is definitely something that makes one think.
I'm sure everything about the film itself has been said already and I'm too lazy to write a wall of text.
Not sure if the Kuldren (or however it's spelled) actually don't ago or if they're just "produced" and all die early.
They are replaceable though, just like most people in a real world war. Also a very unique film, I've never seen anything like it before (in terms on story).
Very interesting film, there should be more stuff like this instead of the bullshit that airs nowadays.

7/10.

I liked the pacing and soundtrack. Animation was decent.

The way characters constantly ignore the main character's questions to keep the mystery going started to get annoying. In the end this movie had to have two very out-of-place information dump scenes to make up for all the withheld information. They really could have done better.

THAT FKN ENDING OMG

I was waiting and hoping Kannami to come back, so was it actually Kannami that was killed at the end there? I was confused on which plane he was piloting. There was awkward pauses in this movie where a character would just stand in one spot and not do anything for like 2 minites lol.

9/10. CG planes looked great, nice Kawai soundtrack, and the story was subtle yet managed to get its point across...

CHANGE
It’s a clichéd phrase you often hear, but “war never changes”. This I believe is the most important lesson to take away from the film. Many scenes are repetitive on purpose, be it folding the newspaper, visiting the diner, conversations, bowling shots, plane movements, smoking, or the news reel. Most importantly is the Kildren, beings not considered human and who never age. They are soldiers used to fight our wars, something that also never changes.

CHILDREN
The pilots are children for a simple reason, to show that war really is just a game, a farce. It’s immature and is sparked and forever repeated by the most petty of reasons.

BUSINESSES
This also a simple reason. War is driven by profit. Such is the reason the opposing armies are companies and their commander is named the Manager.

What I still don't get is why Yuuichi went after the Teacher towards the end, repeating the same mistakes as many had before him (and even mimicking the aforementioned loss by the other squadron). I mean this was just after he was done giving a to Suito about change and not giving up. Also why did he call him Father?

I felt about this movie that it was to much style over substance. It is the same problem I had with Innocence. The CGI dog gifts were awesome, but when the regular animation is mixed in, it looks very awkward. Kusunagi would win the award for the most akward sexual proposition ever

I just wonder what could Kusanagi do to break the cycle? It seems impossible to me. The Teacher and his clones (Kannami, past versions and future ones) are simply too important to be replaced. One is the biggest enemy and the other is an ace soldier. Kusanagi can only observe and live on, for her and her daughter.
