THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Does the future of animation need a retelling of stories from the past? Yes, undeniable, but with a modern touch of course. It's not that hard to draw parallel between the gadgets those kids are wearing on their wists with smartphone, ipad or any portable electronic device, and seeing how common they are today even the youngster can't live without them. So yes, despite it being visually uninspiring and the story is as simple as you can imagine the themes are worth preserving since they're universal and timeless, but a different execution is much preferred, not just the narrative.

The action sequence from the start does not impress me at all. Simple still camera angle and pan-shot and occasion fast-cut are boring as other anime that use the same kind of manga-like technique. And when the short kid is going to fall down the highway it would be nice if they stop the music at that moment the scene would be more intense even though you know no one is going to get hurt instead of the 5-second loop of techno garbage that you've heard for five minutes.

Yep, this is Tezuka. The style of emotional visual storytelling, the ambivalent relationship with technology, the celebration of something we today would call retrofuturism, the subtle, underlying message about the creation through art and the old artist with a beret, glasses and a big nose: this whole thing is Tezuka Makotos quite touching homage to his father.

It's very fitting to animate this whole thing in a very oldschool way, closer to old Disney shorts than to normal anime, just like Tezuka himself. The story and its message may be rather simple, but there its power lies in its simplicity. Nothing overblown, nothing unnecessary. This short is exactly what it wants to be and I really appreciate that. For me, that's 9/10, close to a ten.
In 9/10 cases, the worst thing about an anime is its fandom.

This is so much more touching when you know that the son of Osamu Tezuka has dedicated this work to his legendary father.
And there are some points of that old man that remind me of Tezuka, like him being an artist, then getting ill and him still drawing at the hospital :/

Loved it! Everything has this emotion that is hard to put into words and sentences. Overall the futuristic setting is an odd thing compare to how the whole short movie was only focusing on the tulips and their growth as well as the relationship between the little girl and the old man. But overall the visuals is pretty good for this short movie, not expecting a super duper high quality like a HD anime series of course, so I enjoyed it overall :) Just wish I know whether or not the old man is still alive....though by the indications, it seems he is passed away :'(

Quite interesting episode I must say, the visuals and settings were really lovely and the way no words were spoken and added more musical effect sure made it even more lovely!

All in all another pretty good episode!

i think that for this animation the dialogues would have been more successful that the music how conductor, or use the music in a different way, not only sings if not a mixed of sings and sounds...
....about the plot was weak, simple, how a future when the youngs used the techlogy to enjoy, and all change with a accident...
...the end, with the death of the old-man was tragic, and possible the best of all this animation, but enough.

In some ways, the story is pretty common but I liked the world it showed with the robot animals and mechanical trees and plants.
