I've seen people comment/complain about the anime adaptation not following the manga.

I've read the novel before the anime was adapted (I stopped because of the anime adaptation). I thought they were faithful. I only stopped reading until volume 3

I never read the manga but I only skimmed a bit. I see it them overplaying what happens in the LN.
Can someone enlighten me if the anime is supposed to follow the manga? Will the anime be better if they followed it?

Anyone who also read the novel attest about the anime underplaying the LN?

The Novel is the original source material....the manga came out afterword..it is just that..the light novel ended a long time ago in 2011 and until now..only the manga has been translated which is still ongoing but is painfully slow..only a chapter a month.

Why would people complain about the anime not following the manga?

The anime source is LN not the manga. That is what I don't get from people.

Do you think the anime will be better if it follows the manga?

The orginal was written as a Web novel...which later was written into 5 novels...after word it was re-released as a light novel series with 10 books...than a manga series(the one everyone is reading) is being released at the moment and the Light novels agian is getting a re-release with a total of 16 volumes to add the content that was left out in the orginal novel

the thing is..this series has been re-worked again and again...that even if the main the story remains the same the contents are always either left out or re-added it. the anime is no different.

to be frank the anime is following the light novel not the manga..most people need to get that trough there head.

So does that mean the anime will adapt everything in the series since the light novel is the source material, or are we going to have to start reading the manga after?

No..look...the manga has only reached until where the next episode has covered..after that manga readers will be in the dark as this will follow the light novel not the manga.

the anime will end on the Upheveal Arc....after that there are 2 more arcs that need to be covered..which means that depending on how A-1 ill pace it...they would still need another 1 or 2 cour to finish this series off.

Ah, thats kind of what I wanted to know then, thanks.
Also, so the manga is basically just a retelling of the light novel then? So it'd be pretty pointless to read the manga since it's just going to cover the same stuff the novel did even though the manga is still publishing and not the novels.

Well, if you don't read the LN, then you only have the manga.

It would probably be worth reading it even if you watch the anime because the
manga is certainly NOT the same as the sanitized anime version.
The manga is very brutal/graphic compared to the anime.

IT is like this:

-The Original Story was released as 5 Novel Books
-The Light novel is a lighter version of the novels with 10 volumes total but had a lot of controversial subjects that were in the novel toned down such as Rape, Politics, Sterotypes etc..
-The Manga is a retelling of the original Novel but within it also has the content that was cut-off..hence why a lot of manga readers say it is darker.
-The Light novel got another re-print this time as a 16 part novel with all the added content that was cut off in the first edition light novel series.
-The Anime is following the orignal Light novel...so it is faithfull adaptation but is not as dark as the manga or orignal novel..cause the first light novel additon had those cut off as well.

-The author is currently writing Gate gaiden novels which are side stories that msolty involves the group in a series of other adventure that are set during and after Gate finished.
- The Author is planning to write a sequel novel series to GATE in the future, The Gaiden novels area go between to prepare for the sequel.
-currently 4 out of the 5 gaiden novels are out, once the last novel is released the sequel novel will be published.
-I imagine that Gate got anime after it was finished cause: To help promote the series in preparation for the sequal novel. two it was sponsored by the real jsdf to help as a promotion for its recruitment campaign( the author was a jsdf personal himself). Three: imagine that the entire Gate story will be aniamted so at least another cour or two will be announced after this one so as to adapt all of it.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, I totally appreciate.

It is clear now that the anime is very faithful from the novel.

I don't know how much filter the LN and manga has but I suppose manga has no filter for mature stuff so they can include rape, gore, etc whereas the LN is more clean(can't find appropriate term).

Yeah, I just hope the manga readers will get into their head that the source is the LN and not the manga. The reason why I made this topic because of comments about comparing the anime from the manga.

I am thankful that the anime is glossing over the dragon arc. I've read in comments that the manga is only up to there so I won't be seeing comparison from the manga from now on. Thank goodness.

I know amateur translation is illegal, but I was tempted by the original version, because it seems to have the political element I was hoping when I discovered the anime. Someone pointed me out a site publishing an english version of GATE, but I think it is the first light-novel edition. Did a group ever start to work on the web-novel or second imprint?

unfortunately no...Skythewood translation started translating the light novels with the light content..the same the anime is adapting but they stopped a couple of weeks ago and they only finished up to volume 4 out of the 10..essentially they only translated up to the dragon arc. so yeah pretty much unless your a Japanese reader there is no translation so everyone will be in the dark as to whats coming next.

Edit: The manga has only just started adapting the upheveal arc...but the last chapter that was released which was a week ago ended exactly where the next episode will go...so even if the manga is adapting the darker version of the orignal novels and has those dark elements it is too slow.

The original book novels were never translated and nobody picked it up. As for the re-print not all of the volumes have been published..they confirmed it will be 16 volumes total...which about 6 more volumes than the original light novels as they added all the content that novels have but they only published 7 out of the 16 so far...

-The Only english version that are translated are:
-The Manga version which is up to date but has not caught up with the whole series yet
-The Light novel (light content) Has about 4 out of 10 volumes translated but the writing team behind the translation are on break for the moment.

As for the book novels, Web Novel and re-print they are not translated.

-The Wb was deleted a long time ago
-The Novels are just to complicated for most amatuer translator to translate
the re-print has not been completely published yet (7/16) so we can't know where it will go from here yet.

There is a complete Chinese translation that exist since a while back if someone can understand it. That's where I got my novels from.
