I don't think I can handle this show til the end of the season. It tries so damn hard to be deep and meaningful and melodramatic. I spend half of it cringing and the other half wanting to watch something else. I am ashamed that I may actually have to drop a show... :(

At least show us the god damn fights or something to keep it interesting >.<

Pretty cool episode and yes sometimes the dialogue is really cringeworthy.
I somehow agree with Akane that it's better to get to the roots of the problem instead of being just a temporary help but on the other hand helping someone who is in need of food is never a bad thing either.
CGI looks okay I guess more like a videogame cutscene like others mentioned before but definitily not that bad!

Then the second episode focused on Akane ... I think.

It was nice, I liked the battle in CGI, I wish the game was that way. lol Edgyoto finally joined the team, and holy shit, shut up Akane. ._.

Now one thing that has annoyed me a lot is that white brat, god dammit, stop talking bullshit z_z

3/5, nothing special until now.

Let me state this first of all, because it's been bothering me: the art and animation hurt my eyes. XD The shadows are too blunt and imposing on the eyes. The contrast is really heavy. The animation also just switches to a new frame in a flash, without much smooth transition. And it really hurts my eyes, especially with the heavy shadows.

Also, about the gradience of their hair, my eyes can't help but be drawn to them even when I don't want to. In short, some aspects of the art and design are distracting to me.

The title, with its font and neon purple color, and the character designs, the graphics of the superpowers, they could've been designed to be more fitting to the mood/atmosphere the story really conveys. All of these look very childish (and even remind me of Digimon), but the sentimentality in the anime is more than enough for this art and animation to contain. And some characters are getting a little too emotional and affected for me to empathize with. Hence, it feels like it's trying too hard, when it could've lessened this impression just by changing the art style and animation and giving them a more serious tone.

Because I think the story in this episode is good, overall. Even though this anime feels figuratively like a child trying to assert himself as a serious adult. And I really like the subconscious and conscious talk by Aoto. It reminds me of Death Parade.

wow this show is so bad...
first of all am i supposed to care about that child and his deadbeat father? or even any of the main characters for that matter? because i dont. everything they say is so contrived like
"He consciously tried to save his child. But he subconsciously felt fear, which exceeded his conscious."
???????????? what do you mean. the father was clearly self aware in what he was doing lol...very much a conscious decision because he was able to feel remorse at his actions. doesnt help that the only reason he couldnt save his son was so the writer could show off aoto and co's Super Cool Elemental Powers! either. also the narrations seriously getting on my nerves:
"The boy's conscious and subconscious both desired to move forward."
"The boy stands motionless, and the rain relentlessly falls on him; the big tears of memory."
this is iconic, really. what is it even supposed to mean? this show does a fantastic job at incorporating vaguely philosophical assertions in nearly every other sentence but all i know so far is that i myself am crying big tears of memory too at having to recount the drivel that just assaulted my conscious and subconscious. if youre resorting to some unexplained omnicient voice to forcefully shove character development/backstory into viewers' throats then there is a big problem...breaking all the rules of show and dont tell here. also theres no point to it either like there is no substance to what megumi ogata is saying. it doesnt provide me with any nuances or things that i didnt know. she might as well have said "aoto saved the child." okay? thanks?
not fond of the little white boy either. every time he appears out of actual nowhere i get the overwhelming urge to fall ten stories onto concrete. AND ALSO CG GG DROPPED 1/10

The Cut from the water user reminded me of an anime with the excact same shit going on i watched about 2-3years ago .. i still wonder why they have to copy old anime and bring them as "new" ones ..

I really would like to see how the Ajin anime does .. since there are already ova and a movie going to be released this year and probably a 2nd season coming soon, but i dont think the first episode of it can beat luffys g4 behemoth this week ..

I feel like this show is trying waaaaaaay too hard to be philosophical.

Don't get me wrong, having characters or a series in general be philosophical is all well and good - and I usually rather like shows that have it - but when almost every third line sounds like someone trying to make a different observation on the human condition, it starts sounding a little pretentious.

And I'm not sure if it was just the translation I had, but the way the characters were wording their philosophical lines sounded really odd, especially that stuff Aoto said about conscious and subconscious - which really just sounded like a needlessly over complicated way to say that the kid's dad had freaking PTSD.

I thought the CGI scenes were done fairly well, since the character designs translate well into 3DCGI. Of course you can still tell the difference, but it wasn't as noticeable as other shows have done with their 3D models. I do prefer 2D though...the OP is really nice.

The story seems quite interesting and I like how connected the characters are in terms of experience. For example, when Akane was talking to Aoto about feeding the cats whenever they felt like it, it was literally what Aoto experienced with his parents. Or after the fight when Akane got angry at the father, what he said triggered certain memories for both Aoto and Midori. Seems like there's a lot to these characters. I like tragic/emotional stories, but I think it doesn't work as well in this anime as it should, and I would probably blame the length of the series as why it's not working well. Typically such stories with many characters needs more time to be fleshed out before the audience can fully sympathize with their backstories--or at least it would have more impact over time. But anyways, I do like the characters so far, even Akane, despite him being a little frustrating at times due to his narrow-mindedness. I can understand him to an extent though, since he has reasons for such strong views.

Also I agree that the show could do without the poetic monologues. Or at least keep them at a minimum of once in an episode and not multiple times.

That's still confusing me. Why should they think that? I thought maybe his brothers name was Aoto and he took the name and the blame.

refael9190 said:
BTW, I think Akane is simply surprised that a parent would simply abandon his child, and I see his point. No matter how crippled, most parents would definitely try and get their child...
He did try. But his leg wasn't the only thing that was broken. He tried, but failed because of his illness. Sadly, most people don't understand mental illnesses. "Why don't you just..." is a very common comment.

I don't think it's too bad, really. But overly dramatic. But I guess I'll need a few more episodes to decide whether to drop it.
This season doesn't seem to have much better series.

"Even if someone is consciously good, you don't know if they're a good person. Because their subconscious may not allow them to act nice. Your conscious and subconscious are pure, but the continuous betrayal has stopped you from making pure actions."

I really hope they stop doing this. Speeches like this is half the episode, and it felt incredibly out of place.

Well, this was a pretty decent episode. We got to learn a little bit about each character. It seems like everyone has a dark past. But...for some reason Midori's (off of first impressions) seems like it's a little underwhelming (normal) compared to everyone else's, almost to the point of being silly. I guess we'll see how things go with that one.

This show, in general, has a pretty depressing atmosphere to it. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Especially since our main-main character (Aoto) seems to be such a ray of sunshine. /s I understand that considering his past, it would be very odd for him to be "normal", and I like his character, but as the one whom we spend the most time with, his depression is a little off-putting to me.

The scene with the father and his son, although kind of over-dramatic, felt very genuine to me. And I felt myself getting a little misty-eyed. I'm getting too soft...

Also, I thought that the CG fight scene was both cool and odd. On one hand, it was exactly like playing an anime video game. On the other hand, it just felt so out of nowhere. In any case, I'm really interested in seeing how things go with our main characters.

To put it simply, his relationship with his parents was just that messed up. They wouldn't dare assume that the "good child" was killing them. Keep in mind that they completely neglected Aoto, had him live in some make-shift house, and only gave him cold food, almost as if he were an afterthought.

Guts from Berserk has far edgier past that fits a Linkin Park video better and he isn't bashed for it, but apparently a kid who the target of child abuse and neglect for years is sooo much worse.

Pretty bad comparison. Guts doesn't talk about how the rain can't fill the holes in his broken heart. Or how every time he sees dry bread and milk he remembers his icy past. Or how he can only eat cold things because his heart is also cold. Jeez.
There's a limit. It's like this show was written for 14 year old emo teens. Which it might be.

THEORY: Aoto never had a brother. He invented a brother in his subconscious that got all the love and praise his parents never gave him, and then killed his parents with his subconscious convincing him it was his non-existent brother. But since then, he has become consciously aware that all of that is false, and it was him that killed his parents.

It's not really about his past. It's about the fact that this anime needs to remind us every other minute that this guy is emo through what is now annoying monologues. We bash it because this anime is forcing it far too much.

Akane is a bit annoying. I prefer Aoto.

I actually didn't mind the CGI for the action scenes. They were much better than Ajin's tbh. The "deep" dialogues were put in the right places. Some might think they're unnecessary or cringe-worthy but I think they're there so Akane and Aoto can understand each other better. The generic fire vs water personality thing. Besides they're much better than Bubuki Buranki's dialogues lol.

Overall, I'm still interested in finding out about the characters, their world, and this "gate." Hopefully, the questions they raised out of me won't get lost.

aoto literally says in the first episode "This is why I don't like the rain." or some other. arent you also making excuses by saying its the "narration"? the problem is that lines like "the big tears of memory" (lolllll) exist in the first place. both the narrator and the little brat are relentlessly reaffirming what theyve already established. theyre pretty simple points like "yeah aotos aloof to others because of his horrible past" but you cant go five minutes in the show without megumi ogata being all vague and saying something about rain like its the most profound notion ever. its really just a vicious cycle of "[something ive already told you at least twice] oh and also rain/tears/ice/etc". he doesnt have to be genki but the writing doesnt have to portray him as perpetually moody either.

Since this is an anime adaption for the game...they changed some parts of personalities for Akane, Aoto and Ariton(Aoto's brother)
Santa is Arthur's friend..and Santa's sister, Eve also exists within the game canon =X

Next week will be focusing on Midori and her past with Dorothy(Oz also appears later on..Oz appears in the OP with Loki)
I doubt the other 3 main characters(Yukari, Hikari and Ginji) will get much spotlight since the fairies that pair with them are not even hinted to appear yet...and so far the anime has been disappointing even for the game's player like me -_-
