I watched the anime and I've started reading the light novel(english translation) and was wondering what Emi's real hair colour is. In the anime it is shown as magenta or pink and silver when she goes super saiyan but in the light novel or at least the english translation she was described by maou as having 'flowing jet -black hair'. Is this just a mistranslation or has her hair colour been misrepresented in the anime.

This is apparently old, but all the official art of Emi on the light novels itself show it as red. Even the cover has her hair as red.
I do know of such a thing as a stylized color. For example, Yumiko in Grsiaia is described as having jet black hair. But anyone with eyes will clearly see it is purple. The color is black because, typically speaking. The average Japanese woman is going to have dark hair. Emi in this world is described as Japanese. So I believe that if Emi were a real person she would have black hair except when in hero form. But to make the character designs more colorful her hair color has been changed to red.
I live a life of shattered dreams and broken promises.

That really feels like shameless pandering when you put it that way. To change character designs just because it's not 'anime enough' feels like a cynical attempt to bring in a wider audience :L
