This week's movie was my pick. I mainly chose it because I noticed cav9's list had it under Plan To Watch while nobody else had it under their list at all so at the very least it was something new for nearly everyone there.

Since it was my second time viewing the movie I was better able to appreciate the theme of distance that Makoto Shinkai was trying to portray in the film. It also helped me realize how important it is to explain what the running theme was since it's something that can be easily missed even if you know the movie's subtitle. A few minor flaws became more apparent this time around also. Things like superfluous imagery for instance. While I can appreciate Shinkai's gorgeous background design work, there were many scenes which consisted of basically just that. You'd get a character talking and the entire time that's happening the scene would pan from street corners, to rooms, to the clouds in the sky, etc. When the focus did return on a character it would either be one who's not talking or if it's the person doing the current narration, it would fall many times below the chin so you don't actually see the lip flap when they're talking. Judging by the early reactions of xacess and cav9 I also noted the repetitive nature of some of it. Namely in the beginning with Akari reading letter after letter and later Kanae with her inner struggle to confess.

Still, put together I didn't feel those to be deal breakers, just minor annoyances that didn't do much to detract from an otherwise good film. Each part manages to tell the theme well enough and the unexpected ending although a bit sad is a welcome change considering how many different shows like to end everything happily ever after. Plus, Masayoshi Yamazaki's One More Time, One More Chance song at the end sounds tailor-made for this film. If you pay attention to the lyrics it actually fits very well. Just like when I first watched the film, I can't seem to get the song out of my head yet again.

Good movie, thanks Tainted. This was probably the first anime that i've watched that the backgrounds was such a point of interest to me, much more than the animation (not that the animation was bad, it was quite good). The backgrounds were fluid almost to the point of being real life. On the subject of real life, that was the story thru and thru, no magical powers, giant robots, or zany wackiness, just three stories based on the life of one character through the years. Having been through a prediciment slightly the same, I felt for the main character. As for low points, the second story kinda dragged down the other two, because it was another character (throw-away character in my opinion) life that had little to do with the first story, so much so that I didn't realize that the guy in the first chapter was the guy in the second chapter for quite a while. All in all good movie.
