This shit, man. This shit is what I wait every week for.

We learned some interesting things about my gf Asuka in effect:

1. We see more of her leadership attitude towards the bass players during practice in the beginning. She's very straight, and uses a very hard voice. It's fuckin scary real talk.
2. She values practice time very much to the point where her eyes turn dead.
3. She doesn't let anything affect her practicing.
4. These points can explain why we see her sometimes practice in the front of the room away from the rest.
5. Shes looks goooooood in white! GODDANG

So Taki is supposed to be a big shot. I hope we learn more of this, either Kumiko's sister or Reina. He definitely has to be the reason why Reina came to Kitauji. Maybe her father and Taki's father know each other? Probably not.

As for the auditions go, it's hard to believe that Kumiko just realized that her bandmates are fighting to be in the competition. At any rate, Reina assuring her with the damn TWO HANDS ON CHEEK MANEUVER was really cute.

The scene with the announcement was done so well. We got to see both members experiencing failure and success. It was hard to watch a couple of the students feeling disappointed, even to the point of tears. It was definitely hard to see Natsuki's reaction. I fuckin love Natsuki's cool and calm attitude, but I was expecting a little bit of something from her reaction for not passing the audition. Instead, it was the same ol stare we get. Much respect for staying cool and composed, but goddamn. I feel for her. At the same time, we get to see that flashback again with that girl that seems to be defiant against Kumiko.

And the very last scene when Michie announces that Reina will play the solo parts...holy fuck. She's a beast. And that fish eye shot made it look like she just became PUBLIC ENEMY #1.

Another borderline boring episode:

developing Midori through insignificant problems, being told Kumiko has grown with almost nothing to back it up. Would have wanted more about redhead eupho sempai failing the audition. Kousaka getting to play the solo part was alright I guess.

Anyone else find it cute how Kumiko says Reina's name?
If they're going down the Shuichi route I hope they actually justify it somehow 'cause the fan favorite pairing seems to make so much more sense.

thank God they did not follow the route tipia Cliché yuri / shoujo-ai that happen in almost every anime that has a female protagonist.
Every 10 animes with feminas protagonists in 9 it follows the cliché route yuri / shoujo-ai and femina protaginista ends with another woman.

It was pretty good overall and boy did they buildup a lot of tension and a bit of drama of which will come in the future episodes especially considering what happened in the end of the episode between Kousaka and the results. I'm pretty hyped to see what will happen next. I definitely feel Hazuki's gonna change a bit too so that'll add up to the conflict too

Hmm expected more from a "music episode" after all these drama/characters ones, I really wished seeing more and longer auditions.

Hazuki really became a good character lately, she doesn't ignore pain but knows how to move forward, and she's honnest with herself. I especially liked when she was happy Shuichi got selected and forgot that her name was not called.
Nazuki not being selected was the only "surprise" from the auditions, I guess they could not just let pass every characters we knew (Katou aside).

Also I don't get how people can be surprised Hazuki still thinks about Shuichi, it was hinted in many episodes. The "girl/girl moment" from last episode was mostly a "female bromance".
But it would be for the best they don't make this relation go further in the last episodes remaining, their is no time for that and little interest for the plot.

Fuck Asuka. Reina is now best girl for me. And I really hope they aren't yuri baiting me, because I ship KumikoxReina so hard now, if they don't end up together I'd really be upset. There's really no room for a Shuichi now, they're not even talking anymore. Anyway, it sucks Natsuki didn't make the cut, and Hazuki too. Not fair.

Poor Natsuki, she started practicing seriously a little too late.

Hazuki was ruthlessly left with nothing but pompoms to hold onto.

^ This. As much as I enjoyed last episode and thought it the best of the series, I got really annoyed with the yuri-baiting. It makes no one happy in the end, neither canon purists nor those on a yuri high who get the rug pulled out from under them.

This episode was so, so good tho. Reina forcing Kumiko to GANBARE via cheek smooshing was precious. They sure are becoming weird-ass friends and I love it. Intense friendships ftw.

And I hope Shuuichi and Kumiko at some point make up and be, you know, FRIENDS. They've known each other too long to give up on that, awkwardness or no.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAZUKI! (Though it was obvious). That smile she gives when Shuichi gets called murders my soul.

I hope this doesn't cut too much into her screen time.

As for Natsuki, time to live in regret over slacking during the time before Kumiko's arrival. That more than anything is heartbreaking. It's a shame, she was definitely the best looking one.

Lmaoooo KyoAni is keeping on baiting then people would whine if their ship would not sail. And I'm keeping on hoping that this will be a 2-cour show but i still don't know. Please people this show's main plot is music and the character's struggles and insecurities and development, not romance, its just a subplot.

But on the contrary, man, this episode Natsuki's failure make me sad (and Hazuki too but her development was good) and the senpai's insecurities are getting too much huh. Those foreshadowings tho, Reina Kosaka, i can see u. Hahaha.

Also, because of the spoilers i saw, can't help but to be nervous in this episode and probably, on the
next ones.

They are either bullshiting or are misinformed. Kyoani didn't cut ANY important scene with Shuichi, most of romantic development happens in second and third books. Anime only adapts first.

I felt anxious too but auditions, like SunFes, were a bit too short. After Kumiko mistook Natsuki for Asuka it was a surprise that she didn't make it :/ Poor Natsuki...
Gh, Hazuki, you shouldn't help too much or you'll turn into an enemy! Her "I failed?" lol
Aw, Reina instead of Kousaka-san, now what's left is a "Kumiko" from Reina -I wanted to see her face after Kumiko squeezed it, that's not fair, she sure was adorable, but that last shot... xD-
Asuka sure was scary this time o-o' "That's too honest." Kumiko, really? Even though you've changed so much (too much?).
Kaori didn't get the solo, uh? The girl who act like she has a crush on her (can't remember her name) will be very, very mad. Good luck Kousaka.

To be honest, I'm sadder with Natsuki failing the audition than Hazuki. Hazuki seems like she didn't care so much, to the point she was more worried about Tsukamoto passing or not.

A surprisingly intense episode for a series about orchestra club. The final scene with the reading of the successful candidates was brilliant. It made you feel for those that were not chosen. I felt bad for Natsuki and Hazuki failing. This despite my cast-iron heart.

Unlike most viewers, I am indifferent to the romance, but the dramatic aspects are what I find compelling.

So, Hazuki failed. I kinda expected one of the wouldn't make it but I thought it would be Sapphire. But guess that's to be expected that she couldn't concentrate after her rejection.

Another nice example of slice of life this time, everything felt so spontaneous and natural.

RikkiP said:
Hazuki not passing is expected and realistic. Natsuki's failing was kinda foreshadowed throughout the whole episode but still, when she really failed I really felt for her. Why is it that even after having a 180-degrees change in attitude towards the band and after so much effort, she still can't get what she wanted?

Yawn. Asuka completely losing her patience was so spot on that it almost felt like breaking the fourth wall. I was hoping they would can all this teenage romance crap, but apparently not even the auditions were important enough to spare us.

What's so bad about making an anime about band music? Why must it take a second seat to this stereotypical waste of time? Oh, no! She loves him but she doesn't know it yet! But everyone else does! What will happen? Oh, boy, teenage girls talking on the phone about boys, this is so thrilling, forget all about that silly concert band business -after all, it's only the defining characteristic of your series that sets it apart from every other one out there, so who cares, right?

At least Shokugeki no Soma hasn't disappointed me: 9 episodes out, 9 episodes about hardcore cooking with no screwing around. I'm not saying this should follow the same formula, but when your anime about music gives the audience no musical insight beyond some instruments' names and all they are talking about later is homo-lust-fueled shipping, you are doing something wrong.

It's pretty clear. Usually you start to have feelings for someone when you get conscious of him, start to thinking about him, asking yourself questions like "Why me?", "Did he mean it?", "Maybe I should try."

And that's what happened here. She was oblivious to him until Hazuki told her on train.

MC oblivious with a childhood friend's feelings was never new. You can see that in many Harem based anime. People think this is new since it's a female MC who have childhood friend that rarely interacts and talks to her. Then add a gorgeous, beautiful female friend that supposed to be a close friend to her.

I think it's not forced. It's already been there in the very beginning. It just happened that the focus of this season is Kumiko and Reina's development.

Ain't Shuichi the one who introduced Kumiko to music? That doesn't make him less important. Same goes for Reina, she became more competitive to prove she's special in the eyes of Taki-sensei.

Because anime should always end like that. Main female character should always end up with male childhood friend. I watched this show because of the band dynamics and music.

Hazuki not making it was a giveaway in the opening because she was the only girl from the lead characters didn't appear in the concert scene. I wasn't really sure about Natsuki (since few other side characters were not shown in the opening) until the moment Kumiko said her audition took longer.

Ajunky said:

The msg was actually delivered in the last part of episode 7 and continued into the first part of episode 8. When Hazuki asked Kumiko whether she was going out with Trombone's Tsukamoto, she was like "Trombone's Tsukamoto?" with a pause as if she didn't realize who Hazuki was referring to, only moments later to say out loud "You mean Shuuichi?!". That was one of the worst acting ever and it was a good indication that she was in denial of the fact that she likes him. Why do I think so, because she dropped her egg-roll immediately when Hazuki asked her the question which doesn't follow up with what she did afterwards. Those who have seen quite a lot of anime or read a lot of manga would know that dropping egg-rolls from your chopstick is serious business.

But you are right, the cactus denial was much stronger a message. Her eyes have already started to look for Shuuchi on their own. That girl is in complete denial.

As for the episode, I think Hazuki is a terribly good character. Kumiko looks up to Reina perhaps as a role model, but Hazuki is also very mature and worthy of a good example of braving any difficulties and moving on with a smile regardless of the outcome. They are just in high school remember. So, a lot of things are ahead for them. :)

NB: This anime is so good that I actually watched it on my phone. This has been a while since I did this. Last time it was an episode of Chihayafuru and it was worth it!

To me the episode 7 was not definite enough. Kumiko was taken aback from Hazuki's question, but that could have very well being simply the surprise of someone declaring her love for her childhood friend, which might have been like a brother to her. Shuuichi's invitation (which was as good as a confession) later that day is what made her start acting akward. From here I would think at most that she was confused, but the resolution of that confusion doesn't necessarily end her realization that she loves him in a romantic way.

But this episode she is obsessing about him. You could say that last episode she found a ticket to "Shuuichiland", but she could still have thrown it away. Now she got on board and there is no turning back, it's just a matter of how long the trip is.

Unless Kumiko's fairly low self-esteem was causing her to perceive Natsuki as better than she really was, Natsuki's rate of progress is tremendous showing she does indeed have talent. If she had practised seriously right from the start, she would have been some serious competition to the more experienced Kumiko.

Exactly. Even if you have talent, it is something that needs to be nourished. You keep it in a drawer and it starts getting rusty and then a point comes when you regret about it.

Look at Reina for instance. She is not only talented. She actually tries her best to polish it further. The fruit is her getting the solo role. And then again, sometime no amount of effort is good enough when you face someone with talent who is serious about it. Kaori-senpai is an example of that. Her clenching the instrument as she saw Reina's back as she walked away was another example.

No studio does it better than KyoAni, delivering emotional state of a character more from their gestures than their words.

I'm curious to see how things develop in the next episode. The auditions were heart breaking... I remember going through a similar process in high school, and how horrible it felt my first year to not make the flute part. I was actually a wreck during that scene because it brought back so many flashbacks.

That being said, I love the episodes that focus on the music. However, I am getting confused with the direction they are trying to go in. I love Kyoani a lot. I think about Free! and Hyouka and so on, and they had like two main plots: friendship and _____ (whatever the show was about). I feel that the music part is strong, but then the friendship part is a bit.... jumbled? I don't know, I mean I know other shows have a lot of sub plots, but I feel a bit confused as to what is trying to be developed. Perhaps it has to do with the sheer number of characters. For me, it's been difficult to keep track of the members outside of the few first years and an upperclassman or two. I don't know, I'm no critic, but it's just something I noticed.

Overall, enjoyed the episode a lot.

On the contrary, it is the sheer number of characters that makes this, along with Amagi (not as much, because the side characters had lesser roles) and Nichijou (one of KyoAni's best till date) a real treat for me. The uniqueness of all the side characters in this anime also show the author has the capacity of touching many general, yet different characteristics of individual characters.

The novel is more straightforward compared to the anime counterpart and focuses more into music than relationships. However, in the anime, the friendship/romance may appear a bit jumbled up because it was intentionally done by KyoAni to add more spice to it. If for instance you can understand character A and character B and their relationship from the get go, then honestly, you are watching a B grade anime at best (if one of the main themes is romance) that doesn't make you think about the relationship or prospective alternatives.

This anime has been an A so far for me. And if they can do it right until the end, I won't hesitate to list it as an A+ anime.
