Is white album worth the watch?

The first season has a pretty harsh score but the 2nd season has a really good score.

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.

but will the fact that I did not watch the first one make the story hard to understand?

Gopher it, my breddah.

There's nothing strikingly bad about WA, it's just held to a higher standard as a more household title and a widely recognized VN. That's why you are seeing the ratings fluctuate like that.

Betcha a lot of people who didn't enjoy S1 didn't stick around for S2.

They both did me well.

There might be confusion here, so I'm gonna clarify. In the White Album "series" there's White Album, White Album Second Season, and White Album 2. White Album Second Season is just the second season of White Album, and if it has a higher rating that's just nature of how sequels have higher ratings (guy above talks about this). White Album 2 is separate anime with very little connection to White Album and can be watched without watching the other two anime beforehand. Its generally considered to be better than them too, so that's why it has a higher rating than them.

Well, it has a slow pace. Romantic moments are there. Characters are decent.

You could give it a try. I gave it a try, a bit too slow for me. So, holding it for now.

White Album 1 & 2 are two separate stories.

THIS!

BUT!

WA 1. Is not bad at all. Its just different because it doesn't follow the usual harem path. The actual cast, for the most part, are adults with the MC studying at a university. The MC will make decisions that won't sit well with the viewer. Think School Days only....not so fucked up. This is the adult version and not so annoying either. Though you'll probably be cussing the MC out for being a bit of a dumbass and
It also has a more of a Seinen feel to it. or isit actually a Seinen? I can't remember

Its a slightly...darker harem in a way. more serious.

WA2. This takes a much lighter and slightly more generic approach. A much younger cast. set in high school. a goody two shoes MC who's a little different from the others and a more Shounen feel. Real story line too like the 1st WA. MC not being that much of an idiot. and it has a lot more fluffy lovey dovey romance going on. Lots of "aww thats so cute" type shit. As you watch it you'll notice it slowly slowly moving towards a more serious tone. Its only got 2 female leads on top of that as opposed to WA. So its NOT a harem. its a love Traingle.

Hopefully i explained that well lol

Both are good in their own way and both have their bad points. I prefer WA2 honestly though I did like the more realistic aproach that the 1st 1 took.

Try the 1st one and if you don't like it. just go straight to two. there completely different with very little connection. And you'll likely won't notice those either.

Skip the first season imo.
It's completely unrelated to the second season (besides a few song references)

Personally, I like White Album better than the White Album 2.
It's a mature version of School Days without nudity and violence.

They are definitely worth the watch. I don't get why people don't like them. Just because they don't have a generic happy ending doesn't mea n its bad. They are just realistic to human nature.

maybe because of the art that people tend to ignore it ( for me when i watched the 1st few episodes i got bored and dropped it then came back 2 years later to finish it )

White Album 1 is miles better than White Album 2.

Only thing better that WA2 has its the graphics and thats because WA1 came out in 2009 while WA2 in 2013.

But as for characters, setting, romance, and story, WA1 is miles better. You will love all the females in WA1. In WA2, the only female that everyone loved is the quiet tsundere, because everyone loves those. WA2 was a pointless love triangle since everyone knew who was going to win at the end.

WA1 is the best harem ever (not the most famous one, thats School Days and DxD). WA1 has no cliches. None of that. Also, one of the best animes I have ever seen.

I definitely recommend watching WA1. Dont be fooled by the low score here on MAL and by the negative comments of other MAL members on the WA2 forums. In fact, read the reviews of WA1 here on MAL and you will see all positives.

WA2 is very cliche. WA1 is not cliche at all.

Even if WA2 had 26 episodes, it will not be better than WA1, and thats because of the characters.

You know WA2 has only been adapted 1/4 of the way, right? Nobody has "won" and you haven't been introduced to the full cast yet even.

The reason WA2 is so highly praised is because of Closing Chapter and Coda, which are by far the best tragedy/romance VNs I've ever read. Intro chapter, the first 13 episodes of WA2, is only the very very beginning of a much larger, heartwrenching, and complex story that isn't generic by any means.

All that said, I still prefer the characters, pace, and overall plot of WA2's anime. I didn't enjoy the anime of WA nearly as much.

Having just finished the first season of WA1 and about to start the second, and then eventually WA2, I think it's a pretty good harem drama and I tend to dislike drama. Although I think this is an anime where your overall enjoyment depends on how you view it.

A lot of people have strong feelings of like or dislike for the MC and the different characters and I feel these feelings can influence you're overall enjoyment. For me, about mid-way through the first season, I had a thought that, maybe, the MC is someone who has a fear of rejection and losing everything, as well as an intense need for love and acceptance. I felt like this further became apparent after you learn more about the MC's mother and father. Now, whether or not this was the "right" way to watch it or not I cannot say, but personally, it helped me better understand the MC's situation, actions (especially the later ones) and the anime as a whole and overall made it more enjoyable for me.

However, whether or not watching the anime through this type of lens would help you or anyone else, I do not know. All I can say is it helped me, but WA is an anime with many layers and many ways to interpret it. It's those reasons, however, that make it overall a pretty good anime.
No I don't read manga. Why? Because according to MAL manga readers, all anime is either: too rushed, too slow, anime original, or a terrible adaption. I like to enjoy anime for what it is, anime.
