What is the darkest anime you have ever seen? By "darkest anime" I mean the most mind twisting, emotional scarring, keeps you from sleeping at night kind of anime.

I feel like Berserk would definitely be at the number one spot, but for the sake of variety the manga of Tokyo Ghoul is defintely something I would say comes close to Berserk

I think Texhnolyze is the darkest anime I've ever seen so far

i dont understand why people mistake gore for dark....berserk is a good anime/manga but it is not the darkest....a dark anime should leave you hating how unfair the principles of the world is...psychopass is one of them not the darkest though.it should present the malice of the world and accept it. mushishi and black butler are quite close.evenmy teen romantic comedy is dark.

Berserk is not the darkest anime. It's got a grim setting and gory action. (I cannot speak for the manga as i never read it.) The darkest anime should fill you with despair, be gloomy and pessimistic. It should also be preferably grounded, but this last part is out of personal subjective preference.

I've seen a dozen of dark animes and i am still looking for something that could satisfy my craving.

On a side note. Midori Shoujo Tsubaki is up there. If not the darkest , it's certainly one of the most depraved and twisted.

Edit: I must stress this though... Animes are darker when they are aimed at the Seinen or Josey audience. I would advise people to not look for it in Shounen due to the genre's limitations. Shounen is anime for younger boys and as such rarely crosses the line into true dark and mature matters.

^ Well said. I came here looking for gore animes too, but now that you mention it, "dark" animes SHOULD hold more of a stigma relating to "a dark anime should leave you hating how unfair the principles of the world is".

In fact, your response resonates with me so much because I've felt exactly THIS after watching a couple animes. Like, I'll finish it, and then sit there and think, "Wow. Even though my life is pretty decent, fuck the world. People are heartless bastards."

Nonetheless, I will say that this (or somewhere else, there) should be a thread focusing on gorey and/OR depressing animes... something so twisted, boundary pushing, and edgy.

I haven't ever watched Berserk myself -- I know it's gorey and "messed up" -- but from what I've heard, there's a lot of "betrayal" and demonstrations of human cruelty. So Berserk may be a valid answer, still.

Someone else tried mentioning a non-Berserk anime for "the sake of variety" so I might as well too. Here's an obscure anime you've never heard of but SHOULD make you uncomfortable -- it's very, VERY old -- it's called Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freakshow.

Squishing baby puppies to death, a middle-aged man making love to a satisfied adolescent boy (whilst licking his eye), and the pure despair of a little girl throughout a tragic series of events -- kidnapped by circus freaks and bullied in an unrelenting manner. These are just some of the things that make this horrific anime one of the culture's "darkest". So much so that it's apparently been banned in some countries.

What's most interesting is the fact that you haven't ever heard of it. It's obscurity and novel rarity makes it all the more disturbing.

I’d have to say MONSTER, that shit changed me, influenced me and helped become the person I am today. The last few episodes of NGE are brutal as well. I love shit like this.

Also I joined new here to say, I just picked up MONSTER manga and I got finals in a week and I cant put it down lol.

As magnificent as Berserk is, and despite aspects of the story being genuinely dark, I'd say that series like Mouryou no Hako or Monster or even, in some respects Elfen Leid, are far "Darker"
