The good and old:

1. "let's infiltrate and cause a war and then die XD".
2. "lemme play a bit with these silly humans" -> gets killed by kids.
3. "let's be brave and use the power of friendship plus my super skills with mechas to defeat the enemies from 2!!!!".

Even though I am making fun of these points, it was enjoyable, I guess.

That was already pretty obvious in the first episode. The double was quite easy to predict as well

Getting a very "Attack on titan-esque" feel from this anime, from the OST and the sheer one sided battle we just saw.

Otherwise enjoyed the ep

Amazing visuals, OST and pacing so far.

Can't wait to see what the extremely logical MC comes up with to take out a Super with reals..

Speculation:
I'd say atleast the bottom of the feet are vulnerable if not the joints as well

God damn that was great. So many beautifully animated mecha battles and soundtrack to go with it. The purple mecha that dissolved everything it touched was amazing. Again the feeling of hopelessness as humanity is faced against a much stronger race and is being wiped out.

I'm sure we all knew the princess that got assassinated was a double, but the main character's friend's death hurt. MC himself didn't show any signs of grief but it'll definitely resurface later as part of his character development.

Forever blown away by how beautiful the animation and scenery is. The mechas on the other hand... take some getting used to I suppose.

Inaho's a little too expressionless, but I suppose that has an appeal in itself. At the very least it's a refreshingly new kind of protagonist. I'm interested in seeing how(/if) his character will grow throughout the series. I'm glad Marito survived~ I don't know if I was actually expecting him to die just like that, but I'm definitely glad it didn't end up happening.

If this MC annoys someone, then I guess walls, rocks, and tables annoy them too. If that's the case, I feel really bad for them.

Wow, over the top episode! It was intense thorough the whole 20 minutes, while it also felt like only 2 minutes passed.

Not sure if Kalafina only handles the OP, the OST sounded very Kajiura'ish, nonetheless the sound effects and the music are AMAZING.

Perhaps the Light of Alnoah "teleports" instead of disintegrates? Let's not forget that Alnoah Zero was the structure found on the moon which was used for warp teleportation. Perhaps anything that touches it gets teleported to ... Somewhere? ^^

Also very curious to see how the Martians developed this kind of tech. Lots of questions raised, while none are answered! A very interesting take on the mecha genre at the moment.

Inaho is indeed too emotionless, unless he keeps his expressions to himself. However it's done in such as way that I don't feel annoyed, I'm very interested to know about him and/or his past (if he has a dark one)

This episode was sheer 5/5. Can't wait for next week again!

Yeah humans being crushed xD, I didn't think it would be a massacre, curious as to how they will counteract that shield/barrier once they have no idea what it is.

good to know that the princess is still alive and as it was suspected, they who started this war. Looking foward to the next episode.

Inaho might be a sociopath, which would be pretty cool since we rarely have one as a protagonist in anime, especially in something as mainstream as mecha. The last anime lead that might be considered a sociopath would be Light from Death Note.

If this anime shows Inaho journey to becoming a monster then it'll probably be one of my favorites.

I don't understand how the lack of any military acumen or forethought can excite people.

"Preparing for 15 years" and that's the best they can come up with? A lot of the tech they have is inferior to what we have today, they don't even have railguns ready. They knew about the jamming from 15 years ago but couldn't come up with an effective countermeasure or even inform their troops of it? They knew that the enemy, being in space, could easily target their satellites, but didn't plan for such an occasion? The jets went pretty much point blank to attack and didn't even fly at their best speed to escape, what are they, WW2 aircraft? I doubt the weapons they gave their mech suits would even be effective against tanks, never mind advanced alien shit.

What was the reasoning behind building mechs anyway? They are not efficient, you'd do better to put all of your efforts into developing new munitions. They didn't even try artillery after evacuating the population. Are 10 year olds running the world's armies?

I find this anime insulting to human ingenuity. Also, the princess didn't inform her own military escort that she was sending a body double? *sigh*

Yeah I don't get that part. Even in Super Robot Wars OG for example where the Earth robots start way outclassed they aren't going at super mecha with mecha sized hand guns. Again I think they just went way overboard in trying to display the difference in power levels without a really good explanation. I mean in Turn A Gundam for example the power differences between the two sides are due to Earth regressing to an Early 1900s level of technology for reasons that eventually tie in deeply to the series plot and themes. Here its just like...because reasons apparently.

Also how did they evacuate Tokyo so damn fast? It's like a ghost town by the time the heroes are trying to book it underground yet the princess is still there as are our would be assassins and principle cast and that's about it.

I predict that they will pull a twist in episode 3 - the MC will die in an incredibly dumb way due to his uber-aloofness.

Seriously though, I'm enjoying this show decently well so far, even though it's done little to differentiate itself from similar series yet.

I doubt that but expect some really over the top twist nonetheless since the creators suggested people watch at least up to that one on Twitter. I just hope it's not just a dumb pointless grimderp twist and actually serves to add some layers to the plot

Some observations about the mecha.

Firstly let me get this out of the way, I was presumptuous in my earlier assessment of the mecha. They are OP but it seems they do not all possess the same abilities, infact it's very likely the crazy guy has the only "anti-matter" type mecha (or he and his castle). The other four have different abilities.

1. The first guy uses long range artillery like lasers (so far).
2. The second guy uses melee weapons, and it seems like he's vulnerable to damage (if you notice he actually shield himself with an earth forces mecha, he also doesn't disintegrate matter).
3. The third guy uses electricity, he shielded himself using it and also attacked using it, so he as well doesn't have the anti-matter ability.
4. The Fourth guy uses energy tentacles and doesn't seem to disintegrated objects either.
5. The fifth guy has the anti matter technology but doesn't have ranged weapons, which highly SUGGESTS that matter cannot leave or enter the field that's covering him.

Going by this observation, it's likely the knights of sidonia keep a certain amount of technology to themselves so they can be different and have an advantage over other knights. It's likely these abilities also have time limits on them or at least weaknesses (assumption from what the anti matter guy said in the second episode). So far we've seen that the anti-matter has a time limit (assumption but I'm almost 100% positive about it), the artillery guy is likely weak at close range, hence why his mech is so slim.. it's likely that it's made to be very agile to run away from enemies and keep distance. The beetle looking close range mecha probably has strong CQC abilities and can take punishment but is not much of a threat at range etc etc. Antimatter's biggest problems are that he can't use weapons and is slow I think, if I am right and it works both ways then projects will be destroyed if he tries to shoot them through his field. Additionally you might ask, why is his mecha so big then? Why not make it smaller and more agile? I think the answer to that lies with the time limit... if he sacrifices his armour for agility and gets caught out not only would he be pretty useless but he'd also be destroyed fairly quickly.

Maybe I'm looking too much into it so early on, but that's the impression I'm getting from what I've been seeing.

I'm going to hold judgement until I see more but... I hope this doesn't turn into "teenager finds random overpowered mech now he destroys all". We have seen that in almost every mech anime. Since the martians are so op it seems the story will go that way.. or this anime is just going to be gore-fan service with characters being introduced and dying for cheap feels.

Intense from start to end, this episode delivered even more than I anticipated.

I guess it's ok that the princess survived(I knew it ever since she appeared in the OP), but how will she deal with the situation now?

More importantly, what will no-presence MC(since Inaho seems to be considered for an MC for some reason) come up with to save the day? I really can't see it.

First of all let me state that Aldnoah.Zero's world takes place in a parallel universe, therefore any technological advancements we have made up untill now in the real world might be considered science fiction for them.

Now on to our point, obviously 15 years ago the Martians's technological prowess wasn't as high as the present. The soldiers were surprised when they saw the bullets's impact weren't affecting the Martian mechs's armor at all, so we can presume that this was something they hadn't expected.

Also, counter-jamming isn't all that easy. Even to this date, ECCM isn't as developed as we'd like it to be. In the show, it's shown that the comm-link still works, although with parasitic quality. Hence, either the ECM was not effective, or the army had already deployed ECCM to counter the jamming to a certain degree.

How would they protect the satellites? Even if they wanted to, it would still be out of their reach, considering the tech Earth currently possesses. Even if they were to send something (mechs?) into space to protect them, those orbiting martian castles would just wreck them to pieces in little to no time.

How would you know how fast the aircraft fly? For all we know the pilots tried the best the could. Actually, to be fair, I think they did show the one sided battle on purpose so they can show off the martian mechs's abilities and fighting capabilities. But on a side note, I think your over-nitpicking this

This goes for the mech suits's weapons as well. We haven't been shown what their bullets are made out of, or how strong they are and what they can penetrate. However I will agree, it's proven that with today's materials mechs would be very inefficient compared to tanks. Mechs are just a huge target and easy prey, whilst tanks have a low profile and can pack a punch, especially when in big numbers.

That's still a question I ponder. I would say there might be a good reason for this, like either the civilians weren't fully evacuated (as seen in the armored truck) from the city, or due to comm-links being nearly-shutdown they couldn't get enough details to calculate the area of barrage.

The princess probably didn't inform her military escort because she's on Earth's side. Just a hunch guess, can't be quite sure as this show will most probably be political-oriented like Code Geass.

I love the way they think. "If it seems obvious, just show it in the op/ ed cause they probably already figured it out." The op already showed the Princess was alive, and the Ed hints that the girl who tackled inaho was the Princess in disguise, with the Princess' reflection in the water.

He has a point. In a visual range dogfight, The F-22 is not really any better than it's contemporaries, and the F-35 could well be worse. The F-35 is also a bureaucratic nightmare.

I see... I just double-checked the episode again and compared it against an F-22/F-35 comparison. Thanks for catching that.

Also: I'm gonna bet that Okisuke is not dead. My bet is gonna be that that shield around the mech isn't disintegrating, it's teleporting objects to another location. We already know Aldnoah technology can do that thanks to the hypergate on the moon.

Watch as I'm totally wrong.

The mc is smart. He purposely told the girl to hit the brakes so the legs of his sister's mecha would be gobbled up and they could accelerate more. I'm glad he isn't going to be another haruto from valvrave. I don't see how they could fight unless they find some secret powerful mech that was being deveoped or they steal an Imperial mech. Coincidentally, it would continue to accelerate until it reached the center of the earth, then decelerate until it came out the other side, then fall back towards the center again, eventually resulting in a sinusoidal oscillation about the earth's core.
