Ladies and Gentlemen (and others) I present to you "How copycat Bakumatsu Rock is"

Bakumatsu Rock vs. Gintama
--------------------------------------------
Hijikata Toshizou / Hijikata Toshiro
Katsura Kogorou / Katsura Kotaro
Okita Souji / Okita Sougo
Sakamoto Ryouma / Sakamoto Tatsuma
Takasugi Shinsaku / Takasugi Shinsuke
Otose / Otose (LOL)
Ii Naosuke / [Couldn't find one]
Iwasaki Yatarou / [Couldn't find one]
Kondou Isami / Kondo Isao
Yoshida Shouin / Yoshida Shouyou

Seriously wtf?

They even act the same as their "originals"

Isn't this anime during the Edo Period? The characters are named after historical people from that period. It's more of a homage.

Come on. Gintama and Bakumatsu are both in Edo Period but can you please explain why the characters in Bakumatsu act the same as the characters in Gintama? and there must be other different names than these in that period. Your comment doesn't explain anything.

Actually his comment justifies the main point you made initially about the names. They use similar names because these names are based on actual historical figures - yes, even Otose. As to there being other names in the edo period, that's kind of a strange argument - if they are going to use the shinsengumi as a plot mechanic or something like that then they have to use a lot of those names, since they were the most important figures associated to the shinsengumi and to problems related to them. About them acting the same, I can't say much since I haven't watched Bakumatsu Rock, but from reading the summary and checking the profiles of some of the characters, I really doubt they are that much alike.

Takasugi's hobby is cooking, Okita's special ability is winking and hobby bathing... Yeah, I think you may have been misled by the similarities between the names which made you look too hard for connections. Sure they are still based on the same historical characters so they may share some personality traits, but from what I read here... I believe they are fundamentally different.

Isn't Gintama just parodying the historical figures' names? That would easily explain why they're so similar.

Yeah, they're all historical figures

I'm surprised no one has noticed that Ryouma's design is a Red Head with a cross shaped scar on his cheek. Kenshin anyone? I wanna see what they do to Saito. For a Kenshin nut like me, Bakumatsu Rock is gold. I was laughing my butt off.

Ok, as a lazy dude, a little bit of research didn't hurt. In Edo period I thought those names are just common and nothing else but the thing is there actually is someone named Hijikata Toshizou and both Gintama and Bakumatsu are just parodying it. Case closed everyone. I was completely wrong and i learned that doing a research before writing really helps.

The Katsura from Gintama doesn't even act like the one from Bakumatsu Rock anyway. Gintama's Katsura is a precious dumbshit. I wonder what the real one was like.

I know this is very much like a close topic, but I want to mention a random semi-related fun fact.

Since there are so many shows based around Shinsengumi, you'll find that Katsura, Shinsaku and the blond kid all have voice actors whom voiced Souji Okita before.

Add the actual one from this show, and you could say that there are four Okita Souji. And interactions between Katsura/Shinsaku and Okita becomes that much more amusing :D
