Well, that was interesting. We meet more characters and more world concepts are explored. This episode almost had a quest-like feeling to it. And welp, the essence of magic exists.

That was a close one for Logy tbh. Wilbell is an awesome witch imo. Weird ending though.

Great Episode, Escha and Logy make a great team, it's nice to see Wibell again and ofcourse Linca was in the episode. It's been a great light hearted start to this series, and I love the direction it took, instead of just being the game.

I would like this show a lot more if it wasn't for the extra doses of cuteness they keep jamming down our throats.

They have a decent world view, they have told us the main plot, they hinted at a little tragedy with Logy, so they have the elements of making a perfectly decent light fantasy, they also have decent characters, decent interaction and all that, but its as if they cannot trust themselves to tell the story, it's as if they are afraid that if Escha is merely cute instead of being the "cutest character in the world", we won't like the show.

Its like the animators are grandparents showing you their pictures of their grandchild, and they insist that not only do you say the thing is cute, but you have to say its the cutest baby of all time.

It ruins what would otherwise be a perfectly decent show.

Escha and Logy looked good together as a team.

Good thing, there was a medicine called "The Bottle of Purity" existed, that can purify the any kind of contamination from water.

Yay Linca appeared and finally animated. <3 Keep giving me her every episode and this be my favorite anime. :P

What an enjoyable episode. I complain last week the pacing for the story was too slow, but they seem to have skip the 2nd assignment and went straight to the next one. (But they in the end still did that assignment) It seems they up the pace with the hints of Logy's past and what Escha found in the ruins and the whole part of some girl saying "stay away". Well I don't have to worry about the story now since it seems they make it stronger then what the game did. Next episode looks to be a good one also, I can't wait for it.

The magician and apothecary seemed nice. SO this world has magic too.
Seeing the water going bubbly for a second was weird, glad it worked though.
Escha is a little too carefree.

I really wonder what alchemy can make in this anime.

Could someone who played the game tell me if the OST are the same? Or they used new songs for the anime? Because I really liked that folk-track.

Anyway, heartwarming episode. No action, only hunting and such, well not that I mind but I hope that something more interesting will happen.

Really enjoying this ^^

Gives a nice heart warming feeling birth beautiful visuals. The clearing water was really pretty.

And Escha is really Adorable.

Seems like there might be some plot with the piece she picked up and the ending.

Exactly this.

Until now Escha has given me the impression of a cookie-cutter character with the only original thing about her being her clothes. I don't mind cheerful girls wanting to help other people, if anything that's sweet, however the way they're going at it now feels kind of forced.

And what was with the ''She can do all this by herself?''. Logy climbed a wall and very predictably fell down to be saved, he's the one who did the work. What did she do? Put the leaves in the jar wow ''You're amazing'' truly was a compliment needed to be given to honour that action.

I don't want to bitch over a series when people come here to tell their liking of it, so I'll settle with saying this. Most likely I'll try one more episode and if I still don't like it I'll drop it.

The episode was really nice and cute. It would seem something happened to Logy back in Central while he was studying alchemy.
I think the apothecary and witch knew a boy and girl similar to Logy and Escha from what they were saying (previous game characters or? - since i heard this is a game).
I'm really glad they managed to purify the water thus helping the villagers.

Maaaaan... I really want to play J-RPG again now especially the Atelier series. It's all so nostalgic and this one episode brings almost all element together.

- Received quest
- Get new recipe in town
- Rare ingredients needed to concoct said recipe
- Explore ruins to get rare ingredients
- Met new party members
- Receive clues about the final boss
- Successfully retrieved ingredients and created the recipe
- Quest complete.

The only things they didn't show us was fighting random monsters& leveling up along the way. I was disappointed they didn't have to fight a mini boss to get the ingredient.

So you are saying that Escha doesn't deserve a compliment just because she isn't the one who collect the ingredient?

Let me ask you:

- What is Escha job? Answer: Alchemist.
- Did her Alchemy work? Answer: Yes.
- Can the result slove the problem Answer: Yes.
- Did she deserve the compliment? Answer: Of course Yes.

People around her saw her Alchemy work, it is logical that the compliment will be given to Escha. People won't acknowledge Logy hardwork but that's not important. Don't forget that Logy and Escha was working as team. Logy collected the ingredient, Escha did the Alchemy part. Not to mention that they knew what ingredient they have to looking for from Escha's research.

It's not that someone sitting around doing nothing, you know.

I don't really understand your complain....

EDIT: Sorry if I misunderstood some part of your post that I quoted. Your post is a bit ambiguous for me.

Another nice episode it was fun to see the main trying so hard to complete the quest she was given.
Her partner was helpful as well but it's still hard to tell what his skill is with making things since he didn't make anything yet.

The new characters looked like fun characters as well tho i wonder why one of them kept her skill a secret, or at least tried to.
I wonder what she was hiding.

The opening suggests that the show might actually have some action. Sadly, haven't seen a bit of it.

Escha is such bad heroine, she's only there to be cute and the creator obviously has some fetish - I mean she could actually waggle that tail. Don't like her voice either, really annoying.

A secret witch, huh?. As if your outfit wasn't a dead giveaway. I guess this really isn't my kind of show.

This is my favorite show of the season so far, hands down. It is peaceful, beautifully animated, the story is wonderful so far, the world has been well-introduced, the characters are somewhat interesting, comedy is rare yet done properly, there isn't any weird fan service, and the music is incredible...I couldn't ask for more. :) I can hardly wait for episode 3, it's really too bad that no company has licensed if for steaming/a future US release as of yet.

I'll give this series another episode or two, but I'm really starting to think that this just isn't my cup of tea. I found this episode to be bland and boring, and I spent a good deal of the episode annoyed at the "cuteness" of Escha.

If less time was spent worrying about how cute Escha has to be, and more time was spent developing characters and plots, I might actually like this series more. I read somewhere that the main plot has already been given? Where and when? I've watched both episodes thus far, and I've not seen, or heard, any hint of a main plot other than assuming that the voice behind the door bit has something to do with it. But, the voice behind the door bit, it was out of place, unnecessary, and lacked any bearing on the episode at all. It was like the just jammed it in there because they wrapped up the episode too quick or something.

Logy seems like he could be an interesting character, but in order for that to happen they'd have to stop trying to make Escha the absolute, hands down, no questions, no doubts, world's cutest character. It's annoying and is taking away from the series too much.

I'm also gonna have to agree that the whole "you're amazing, you did all of that yourself" complimenting at the end, well, it was just wrong.

- What is Escha's job? Answer: Same job as Logy, they are both alchemists.
- Did her Alchemy work? Answer: Yes. With the help of Logy and the two new characters, because she would have died without the mage and apothecary, and would never have got the leaves without Logy climbing the wall after the two new characters led the way.
- Can the result solve the problem? Answer: The results of the team working together solved the problem.
- Did she deserve the compliment? Answer: She deserved a thank you, like the rest of the team. But, no she did not deserve the whole "you're amazing, you did it all by yourself" BS.

All in all, I'll give this episode a "Holy crap, I'm bored!"/10

I have to chuckle since I was both the person who said that they were making Escha too cute AND said that the main plot had already been given.

First episode, the floating ruins from an unknown civilization that has always been Escha's goal to reach and why the balloon docks are supposed to "so wonderful" for this rural town (though they didn't seem so grand in the second episode). That is the main plot.

But we already know what is going to happen, the "alien" living there will find Escha so gosh darn cute that everything will end happily.

On another thread we were discussing whether the MC was a Gary Stu, he wasn't, but Escha is most certainly a "Mary Sue".

I think you're reading just a tad too much into Logy's line there. >_> Yes, he did get the bitter leaf, but Escha was the one who synthezised the item. It did explain in the first episode, albeit somewhat quickly and not very in-depth, that Logy, while being an alchemist, can't synthesize using a cauldron. So basically anytime something needs to be created, Escha's the one who has to do all the synthesis work, and no, not anyone can do alchemy, Escha is pretty special.

I did not get that feeling. From what I interpreted Logy was trained using a forge, but they haven't shown that this is fundamentally different from using a cauldron, it was more a difference in style than substance. Maybe this will prove to be different, but I don't think they have explained that they are different. Both are after all alchemists.

And while I do get the difference between alchemists and witches, I find it amusing that cauldrons are more associated with witches than alchemists. If the writer wants to be clever ultimately Escha's specialness should be that she is not a "pure" alchemist, but rather a "witch-alchemist" blend. Then at least she would be special (I mean outside of her propensity to dry hump people like a dog in heat).

I think the "you did this all by yourself" part is talking about how Escha herself has to go find the materials and all. Logy didn't have to do that back in Central, he mostly spent time in the lab.

I love Atelier so any review I give would be biased, but this was pretty fun. It really felt like playing the game.

Escha's "cuteness" isn't anything I haven't seen before. I would be surprised if she turned out to be like anything but that after being spoiled by a kind automaton for years.

I remember the bit about Escha wanting to go to those ruins and what not, but I didn't think something like that would classify as "main plot". I guess I'm looking too much into this series, expecting some meat on the bones that isn't going to be there, or something.

I can see Escha as the "Mary Sue" type, she seems to damned perfect at everything. Perpetually happy, way too talented for her age/demographic considering location and rearing, both intelligent and dumb at the same time... she's like a puppy. Which brings me to your comment about her propensity to dry hump people like a dog in heat, that's just a perfect statement. Couldn't have put it better myself.

I may have been a little harsh on my rating/review on this episode last night, because I was highly annoyed at Escha's overdeveloped sense of "I'm so cute it kills". I'll give this series another episode or two, and hopefully something will catch my interest. There were a couple last season that put me in the same boat as this one. Witch Craft Works and A Pilot's Love Song. I wanted to like them, but by the end of each and every episode I wanted to drop them. I didn't, I stuck with them to the end. Witch Craft Works turned out to be ok, while A Pilot's Love Song was just a mess I couldn't make sense out of. I want to like this series, but it's got me going in the same direction as either of those others and I'm not sure I want to have the same experience again so soon.

Well I liked it, I don't mind the cuteness and I don't think it's as forced as people here make it out to be, yes there are a few cutesie scenes that might feel a bit over the top but at least it fits the atmosphere of the rest of the show insteand of just throwing in cuteness for the sake of the fanservice.

I'm liking the Logy and Escha pair, they're cute together and I actually kinda like Escha as main character, yes she didn't climb the wall but she wasn't useless either, she has enough initiative and spirit to be likeable if you ask me and Logy is a nice guy who tags along with her :)

It's a cute serie with cute and nice characters who help people in need, don't be disappointed if there isn't some heavy deep dark plot with amazing plot twist, be at least that aware of what kind of/genre serie you're watching.

This series is soooo laid back and calm. Mainly just heartwarming scenes and people helping people.

It's not bad I guess, but wow, they made sure Escha is fitting every part of the moe trope. I don't even hate her, but they really need to tone it down a little...

So Logy has something of a tragic past?

For people that played the game, how is this supposed to work out? From what I glanced over at Wikipedia, the game only has you choose either Escha or Logy as the protagonist?

The number of times that you used the word "cute" sort of goes right along with the opinion of Escha being too cute. Though, some of the points you made are completely agreeable, I still find the amount of "cute" to be over the top. It's not so much that the cuteness is fanservice, not all cuteness is fanservice. Even for such a lighthearted and fun series as this, there is a limit to how much cuteness can be thrown in before it becomes too much. Like making tea or kool-aid, or even certain baked desserts, you can only add so much sugar before the sugar begins to take away from the taste/flavor and ruins it.

In my original comment I was a bit harsh on the episode, I was highly annoyed at my tea having too much sugar so to speak. But, I can't say that this is a horrible series because of it. I'm interested to see where this is going, and will continue to watch for at least another week, but I do hope the cuteness is toned down.
