THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I see the similar parallels being drawn from both sides now. Reinhard is a fast mover. Commander of half the entire armed forces in only 10 years? And to top it off a goal to eventually topple the Kaiser and rule the universe? Can't say he doesn't have lofty ambitions.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

I guess Yang is just plain unmotivated. Right? We don't know his motives yet for joining the army. At this point all we know is that he wants out, with money. 3/5

but did we really need this:

And the falling on the piano bit has already gotten old. Interesting back story though. I'm liking this show, its a little better than Aura Battler Dunbine

Maybe with galactic inflation that was like 10 billion dollars. Sure didn't look impressive, though. :-P

Seems like the Empire is a better place to live than the Free Alliance, or whatever it was called, from what we've seen. At least the Empire is open about it's oppressive totalitarian nature.

Lol, although I would have to agree. :/

But I'm loving the fact that we're getting backstories earlier, since there are many episodes to go, it'll hopefully lay the foundations for some interesting character development later on.

Always.

When I was Reinhard's age, I never thought of pulling a rock on a kid, or going for a shot to the nuts.

Also I think it's cute that Siegfried's got a crush on Annerose. Wouldn't blame him though if you would compare her to a bunch of the other women on Odin, assuming they're every bit as stuck up and sheltered as Reinhard believes.

Reinhard sure was kind of violent as a kid and many good political and military leaders have been violent kids. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with overflowing amount of talent and lack of power to use all that talent and energy; maybe that's what drives those kids crazy?!

^If you think this episode is a filler, I suggest you to stop watching LoGH right now, as I don't think you would like this anime. LoGH is full of detailed, long explanations in building a character, so they need to explain what drives Reinhard for such ambition, and his views of his empire.

hurray for character development ^^,the blonde guy was kinda badass as a kid,he beat the nuts out of that bully wow

4/5

i still don't understand why all the characters act so god damn formal, they barely show any emtion at all!
and don't tell me this was impossible in the 80's,i've seen grave of the fireflies

PS:oh yeah and both the main characters act like they're gay...b*tch slaps, playing in the water and...

THIS...O.o...whoa

PPS:the main characters remind me of the mastercard logo...i wonder why

I think its the culture that is reflected in their behavior. You'll notice the FPA act differently, because they come from a different background with different values. With the empire people, their behavior, mannerism etc reflects old fashioned aristocratic values and sensibilities. Unless you think the FPA are formal as well, I believe that explains it.

I can't believe I almost failed to notice the famous ''It'll warm you up'' scene.

Kircheis: Have patience. Sooner or later, Lady Annerose will be returned to you.
Reinhard: That's not all. I'll also have the universe. Won't I?
Kircheis: Yes.

Some very intense people.

The older Imperial admirals are voicing the exact same complaints as people who didn't like the first couple episodes. Funny thing is their complaints are pretty much warranted. Reinhard has accomplished a lot of impressive things at this point in the continuity, as shown in the prequel OVAs, but neither the Admirals nor the audience currently know much about them.

lol bitchslap and then he kicks the bully in the balls later in the episode. xD

Reinhard and Sieg are so gay for each other.

Pretty depressing to see little Reinhard cry like that I admit I felt something welling up inside me when he did, but I didn't particularly feel sad or shed a tear though.

Jessica: "Secretary of Defense! Where were you?! Where were you, who glorify the war dead?! Where is your family?! I offered my fiancée as a sacrifice. So where is your family, you who preach the necessity of citizens' sacrifice?! Are you practicing what you preach?!"

Reinhard: "What are they doing? Although many are dying on the battlefield, isn't this just like a festival? Their relatives don't go to war since they're high-ranking nobles. In the end, that's why the high-ranking nobles know nothing of other people's pain."

I love the parallels between episode 3 and 4. The Empire and Alliance couldn't be more different superficially, but ultimately they're just the same.

Thus far, I'm disappointed, for an anime that is so highly regarded by most of its viewers, the beginning has been downright terrible.

This is one of the cheesiest, worse done back stories I have seen.

I hope it gets better. Anime is rated 4/10 thus far.

I would disagree. You saw life in the middle class of the FPA which obviously pails in comparison to the nobility of the GE.

I would imagine that the lower class of the GE would be worse off then the lower class of the FPA, but we'll have to see.
