Gentoo here, because of portage and.. the documentation (Handbook, guides and wiki articles are all top quality).

Spoken like a true pragmatist[...]

I think it depends on what I am trying to do; honestly, which is probably ridiculously pragmatic. I voted for OpenSuSE in the poll because I think of all of the Linux OSes I've used, I think it makes for one of the most polished for business. As far as a server platform, I would say it is either between them or Red Hat. However, because I don't like SuSE's multimedia support, I decided to go with straight up Debian for my home desktop.

The short of it - I'm an OS whore. While my needs for a home desktop are kind of general, I do try and take advantage of learning different Linux bases for professional reasons. I've also noticed that I am much more picky about Window Managers/Desktop Environments than I am about the actual base of the system. I think out of the list above, Slackware and Arch might be about the only ones I've not tried that I would be interested in trying.
Excuse me, I have to evict some delinquents from my yard.

I use a derivative of Gentoo called Sabayon. After installing Sabayon, switching the package manager, from entropy, to portage, will put you in a pre-configured Gentoo install.

The community is amazing, they are always in the chat, rooms waiting to solve the next problem. :)
I occasionally hang around (SP_Otaku) to help where I can.

The art and color style is the best I've ever seen. One perk that not many users know about, is that the package manager has an option to create a snapshot of every app installed, and saves it to an xml, so when you move to a new machine, it doesn't take long to get the system where I want it.

THEIR "REALITY" MAY ALL BE A MIRAGE. CAN WE CONSIDER THEM TO SIMPLY BE LIVING IN THEIR OWN WORLD SHAPED BY THEIR BELIEFS?

I use a Debian (my vote) and Arch Linux. Gentoo it good, but it was too time consuming for my taste.

I originally voted Mandriva becaue that was what I was using at the time and I liked it, but now I use PCLinuxOS on my main PC and I love it.

I think it's quicker than Mandriva, but it still retains Drakconfig, which is oe the reasons why I liked Mandriva. It's just as well, because "Mandriva-family" distros are the only ones that my wireless connection works properly with.

On my Asus Eee netbook, I am using the newly-released Linux Mint Debian edition. It's really quick, and when I say that, I mean it boots as quickly as my main PC (quicker if you count the time spent loading the BIOS) even though the PC in question has a quad-core processor and 4GB of RAM compared to the netbook's Atom processor and 1GB of RAM. That's going into a full GNOME desktop too.

Needless to say I am rather impressed with Mint Debian, and combined with its rolling-release nature, that I will be sticking to that as my Linux OS (I dual boot the Netbook with Windows XP) for the forseeable future.

I first tried Debian then a few other things. I settled on Ubuntu, which I used for 3 years and played around with just about everything else in the meantime.
After learning enough to configure everything I need without Ubuntu's extra bloat, I'm back on Debian. I pretty much exclusively use Debian now, both Squeeze & Sid. Though I do also have an install of Ubuntu on a usb stick.

I am very impressed with Linux Mint because of it's native support for .mov files. The only way I can play .mov's in Debian is with smplayer & nautilus won't thumbnail them.
I don't like Mint, though, simply because it's based on Ubuntu & comes with all that extra unneccessary bloat.
So, the very first day that Mint released the 64-bit version of their 'Debian Mint' I jumped on it & installed it on a spare hard drive. A Debian roll of Mint sounded like pure gold to me.
But I discovered that it suffers the same .mov affliction as native Debian. So there is no real point to me using Debian Mint.

The only other thing I've ever been impressed with is Fedora. Although overly Blue, Fedora is very well thought out. My only reason for not using it is that it's rpm based. I learned Linux with all deb based distros & I'm really hopeless with yum.

Using Ubuntu 64-bit now up to 10.10, using Liquorix kernels for the hell of it (probably Ubuntu's default kernels doesn't have what I might need to satisfy my "tweaking" curiosities.)

I chose Ubuntu because I was too lazy to tinker around for a fully customized, newly installed OS and chose Ubuntu as it is. Started from 9.04 and was pretty much satisfied with what it is now.

Crunchbang right now. Got a new Thinkpad coming in the mail that I'll just install Debian Testing on since I've moved away from Openbox to xmonad.

Edit: Back to Openbox so I'm still rocking Crunchbang. Openbox plus PyTyle seems to do exactly what I want a WM to do. Xmonad got in my way too much.

Using Archlinux since a few years back on the desktop/workstation and CentOS on 3 or 4 servers. Probably for the reason that most people stay with their distribution, because i know it and like it. Have been pretty distribution-promiscuous before i finally settled with these two though...
