Gatchaman is an anime that my parents watched in their childhood.

But is there anything that they can connect to the original series from watching episode 1?

Like "I remember that." or "This reminds me of xxx from before.", etc

Otherwise, I won't show them this...

From the first episode there are equivalent characters to Ken, Joe, Jun, Berg Katse and Sosai X. They aren't super obvious (particularly as the Ken and Jun equivalents have different genders to the originals), but they are there. There are a number of visual references, the most obvious being the Gatchaman logo.

So they might get some nostalgia from it, but apart from the logo and a character being called Jo(e), it might be so subtle as be invisible.

^ A nice find!

The logo certainly reminds of Gatchaman. Anything else seems repuzzled over the new concept and characters, which pretty much might not be called Gatchaman. I thought it would be a spin-off or a remake of the original series and didn't check in advance. Whatever, my bad.

It's not like I won't watch it, but it would be more because of Tatsunoko than the series per se. We still have Berg Katse :P

I watched it when I was a kid and I can certainly say that there is almost nothing similar to the original series.

So far there are some similarities BUT with a twist.

In the old series you had hero + cool guy + fat guy + brat + girl. This type of protagonist assortment was very common back then to the point where it had become a trope. The new Gatchaman exploits this trope while reflecting on the old self and having a laugh, so you have:

The Hero - Hajime, the old Gatchamn hero was a guy who became a hero heads on, no question asked (which was a very common thing for heroes back then) and by today standards this is unrealistically stupid, borderline nuts, right? So... why not make Hajime just that - nuts, not psychotic but have her charmingly missing some screws? Sort of like inside joke about old standards translating to the new expectations.

The Cool Guy - Joe, same thing: instead of "cool" he is more "whatever" but still the old bother type.

The Fat Guy - O.D, well not so fat anymore but rather covered in make up, still an outcast.

The Brat - Sugane, still same idealistic, somewhat comedic little brother type.

The Girl - Utsu-tsu, the female side-kick with potential drama undertones, stripped of cloths for good measure to fit the modern ideal of hot chick (Hajime lampshades this). In the old one she is more on the groovy side, because that's what was hot then.

That said, if one is to watch the show for nostalgia value and the bird suits, they may not find it in here.
