This probably applies more to the newer guitar players, those who can't "pick up" a song as easily. I do like to have particular songs I like to go thru and learn each section of, usually ones with "skill levels" somewhat above mine.

Currently, I am trying to learn Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix.

It's a real challenge working thru the simulaneous chord/melody style of this song, but I know I'll feel great once I get it into my fingers.

Is there a piece you're currently learning to play?

That's actually the way I learned like 90% of what I know. It started with trying to pick out single-note melodies for various songs (like the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean) and then once I discovered tabs I starting trying all sorts of things. "Put Your Lights On" by Santana and "Crazy On You" by Heart both stand out in my memory, though I'm not sure I could play either now.

I've always wanted to learn to play Little Wing, but I've never had much luck at it. =/ Maybe I ought to give it another shot... it's been ages since I picked up a guitar myself.

I just realized that it is impossible to learn the solo from Layla. :(

I guess the next song I'll learn will be the rest of Black Sabbath's first album. I have all the major parts, just missing the solos on the last 4 songs. I have a hard time memorizing the tablature to songs, especially long solos.
I'm back.

Which version? I love the acoustic solo...

I've been trying to learn (and re-learn) some Chili Peppers tunes lately, but I always get stuck because I like so many of them that I end up hopping around and learning little snippets rather than whole songs. I Could Have Lied is the current project though.

This. All guitar tracks, I can already play the entire piece besides the solo, and even then, it's not extremely hard for my level, BUT, I want to record it as good as a studio version, that's the goal I have with this piece.

A Wilhelm Scream's entire discography, or at least their album Mute Print. Seriously technical, and not in a shitty "ooh look at me :D!" kinda way. One of the best active punk bands around, if I do say so myself

For newer guitar players

I advise you guys to start practicing your scales and modes, they help you to understand whatever song your learning better..and of course,to help you improvise some cool licks for the song if you're gonna cover the song with your buddies..
Its 420 out there somewhere.
